How Games MASTER Silence
Переглядів 722 місяці тому
In this video game essay retrospective, we explore how silence is used in video games-not as a gap between sounds, but as an active storytelling tool that shapes our emotions and experience. From the unsettling silence of The Last of Us Part II, to the emotional depth of Journey, and the tense atmosphere in Silent Hill 2, silence becomes more than just a pause-it's a powerful narrative device. ...

      @@BaegogiI wouldn't listen personally. It's nice seeing less popular/more divisive games represented. Cause it's not like Forces DOESN'T use the Sonic Formula, just in an arguably lackluster way.

      I'm glad you enjoyed the videos! Off the top of my head, I would say a game like Undertale would be an example of an indie game and Persona/Metaphor: ReFantazio of an AA game that beat out AAA games in the RPG genre. A lot of people would also say Palworld compared to any modern Pokémon games. Hope that answered your question!

    I mean technically you COULD live in your tent forever in Animal Crossing New Horizon and never upgrade it to a house. You're not gonna die (there is no starvation mechanic) and so you could just open the game and idle around the island if you want, with no consequences. Sure Tom Nook would like you to focus on island growth goals but you can just be a beach bum if you like. At any point in a save you can just honestly just stop and play around where you are at. I am just not a grinder by nature so the game does have the ability for you to just do the things you like, ignore the things you don't, and just exist in a bubble. And those are the types of cozy games I like where yeah, there are progression mechanics but there are just idle entertainments that really don't make any difference one way or the other. In GoGo town for example there's a little car and tricycle you get just for starting a town. I litterally wasted a bunch of time not growing the town and zipping around on it for no good reason except it was fun. Basically, in most cozy games it doesn't seem like the 'virtual' world is gonna end if you don't engage with the progression systems for a bit. And when you do feel like doing so, you will be rewarded for any work you put in. You can grind super hard IRL and honestly there could be no reward. You could just get stuck in a dead end job space either because job advancement opportunity doesn't really exist due to the state of the economy or your boss just favors some other employee that doesn't work as hard as you. Cozy games basically do not punsh you for not grinding (sure they try to induce FOMO to keep you playing but you can basically not care) and do reward you directly when you want to engage in progression mechanics. As for the trash game volume in cozy games, good, that means its popular enough to feel like a genra worth creating more games in. The good stuff will rise to the top, the junk will filter out. Meanwhile players have more choices. Part of being a consumer is a few bad purchases along the way.

    Loved the video! If I might add my two cents on this topic: I don't really dread productivity or the grind per se, I think they can be useful and they do wonders for our brain's reward system when we put that much effort and things end up well. The reason why I've come to despise productivity/grinding when it comes to work is because I'm being forced to it, otherwise I won't make ends meet. I think cozy games like Stardew Valley which rely on being productive are so popular among people because they give us this illusion of choice and free will: if I choose to not be productive and do nothing for a day on stardew valley, my character won't really suffer much consequences for it, but if I do put in a lot of effort my character will be rewarded immensely.

    • @Baegogi
      @Baegogi 26 днів тому

      That's a great point! Being the one in control of when/where/what we are being productive or grinding in makes a huge difference in how people perceive things and how it impacts our outlook. Thank you for your insight!

    • @brenc8883
      @brenc8883 26 днів тому

      This is spot on. I don't feel any particular pressure in Stardew Valley, for instance, because events and seasons always come around again. I can choose what to be productive in and ignore other things. There very few set rules or requirements for what I MUST do in the game and no real penalties for delaying things, so I don't really feel like I'm missing out on anything by completing tasks at whatever pace I want to. Maybe how pressured someone feels to be hyperproductive in some cozy games comes down to how comfortable they are with not constantly chasing in-game goals? (I say some games because I know some cozy games have tighter time constraints -- Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life comes to mind. )

  • @Gurianthe
    @Gurianthe 26 днів тому

    • @konstantinkunz2256
      @konstantinkunz2256 23 дні тому

      I agree. The fun of Harvest Moon is to have a simple relaxing routine where you try to do the same thing even more efficient so you have more time to do some other things. This is why they got rid of the time limits that the early Harveest Moons had because without those, the player can choose what to do for how long.

Whether they're basic bots, LLM bots, a dodgey human or just a genuine person, no harm being skeptical. (Asking for collabs is one of many "and then they scammed me" story starters 🥲).

    couldn't agree on this, but of course every one has it own prefer game. I play Wukong, Astro Bot, Final Fantasy, Elden Ring and Metaphor, except Balatro. Wukong is by far the best game here for me and for most of the player, as we all know player voice Wukong did win on that, i do know Wukong will not win GOTY, obvious reason is politics and China hate. Astro Bot for me is just so similar to most of the Mario game and some other platformer that i play, is a fun game , don't get me wrong, but just not GOTY to me, i would prefer Metaphor since i knew Wukong not winning.
