My 3x great grandfather was a drummer in a Union Regiment. I had always heard that they drummed "codes", so the Confederates couldnt interpret their communications, but I never knew what that sounded like till watching this! Thank you!

What is the source for the cadence you play at 16:50? I can't find it in the Bruce & Emmett.

My 2nd great-grandfather enlisted in the Union Army at age 18 as a drummer. He was later taken prisoner and wound up at Andersonville. Until I saw this, I had no idea of the important role drummers played. Thank you.

I could imagine the slew of swearing 'Three Camps' would have created along with the cacophony of Army coughing which was claimed could drown out the drumming.

My gggf was a drummer boy for PA Regiment 104 in the Civil War. Age 15- 18. I had no idea how much re responsibility they shouldered!

"Downfall of Paris," set metronome from 100 - 110 beats per minute it flows better at that tempo. It's a quick step in the Bruce & Emmett. Was not a concert piece. It's a British march from the 18th century and Napoleonic period. Connecticut Halftime was original to Colonel H.C. Hart's drum and fife instructor I believe from 1864. A very unique tablature was used for writing that drum music but can be interpreted easily with practice. I recommend getting a copy of USMC Drum Major Charles Ashworth's instructor, "A New and Complete System of Drum Beating," 1812. It was reprinted in the Elias Howe book 1861. All state militias fife and drum corps were using Ashworth when the war broke out in 1861. Even Drum Major Bruce refers to it's excellence in the Bruce & Emmett. I was a field music instructor for many years working with retired C.A.P. Major George Carroll and USMC Sgt. Ed Jackson. We taught back in the last century from all the original drums books.

That's a neck carriage, not an over the shoulder carriage. It is adjustable. If more length needed, make a loop from the cordage. Many original drums have this. Keep practicing in the Bruce & Emmett. You'll be a sheepskin fiddler in no time. Three Cheers!
