I just went to Ashtabula. They wouldn’t touch gaudy, colorful steelhead patterns, only got them on nymphs like beaded soft hackles, Walt’s etc. Swinging size 14 soft hackles with 3mm bead in stained water killed it.

More confused 😕

An alternate method is to hook your fly on the second stripper guide, wrap your leader around the "reel", not the reel foot, then reel in the excess. When your ready to fish just pop the leader off the reel and give your rod a jiggle and the fly usually pops right off the guide and you're ready to go.

Very important with CheckPawl reels. Learned that the hard way.

Does the overhang mean the reel end of the head is just inside the top rod eyelet so many inches or is it out of the tip with so many inches of running line hanging off the end of your rod?

should the eyes be tied under the shank? the rabbit strip and hook point face up right? the way you show it with the eye on top of the shank would flip the fly in the water, no? thanks

Kudos to this wonderful discussion. I live in the Pacific NW and have been spey fishing for 25 years. The Midwest can now boast much better fishing than the continual decline of my local waters. I can't wait to fish the local Ohio waters of my youth with a new switch system. Nice work Gents!
