Question: How is it (on an Open Delta setup) that only two legs (120 degrees apart) are being supplied to the primary, and yet a third leg appears in the secondary 120 degrees out of phase with the other two? If “Three phase is nothing more than three single phases being generated from the same generator 120 degrees apart” (and I get that). Then it seems like you would have to use all 3 phases in the primary in order to get all 3 in the secondary to be 120 degrees out of phase. How come the 3rd phase on the secondary doesn’t match phases with one or the other of the only 2 supplied? Some type of mutual inductance vector shifting going on???

Gloves? Just approaching this source of power you need to have dielectric mats under your legs. Even if one glove is pinholed, the next will save you. But I wouldn't even risk touching anything as long as suspecting that system is live.

Sorry, very poor explanation of the mathematical relationships that determine the secondary voltages. In my EE schooling our instructor showed us how the Wye and Delta configurations were made diagrammatically, and the math involving in computing the phase currents and voltages. And why would one transformer only be for lighting, and another for power? In a commercial building service, yes, we use the 480/277 panel for lighting often, and then step down via transformer to a 208/120Y service for building power needs. But on the utility side as you describe here???????? Don't get it. Perhaps this video assumes that the student watching it already has worked in the utility field for years, and so may know what you're talking about. But as a building engineer and master electrician, myself, it makes no sense!

open delta is often seen in rural area, typically farms, when the capacity of a closed delta is not needed, saves costs as only two transformers are needed to run larger motors that require 3 phase 240 volt. Be careful of the high leg, it's easy to accidentally connect a single pole breaker and burn up equipment if the person unaware this is 208V.

Newbie here, I can’t wrap my head around how using only 2 phases in makes 3 phases out that are all 120° apart. Is there an easy way to explain here in comments, or a video on here? Or is being 1-1/2 hops away from the neutral making a high so.. sorry I can’t even explain that thought.

I work with machines, normally 480 volts, normally kicking up to 50amps, I am provided ppe but never even knew about the 2 inches rule. I will need to check tonight lol. I will start wearing them now if power is live when I check for voltage or amp draw

1) At the end you show the primaries connected to the ground. Assuming that's just a drawing error, and moving on, I don't grasp how you can have any transfer of power with nothing connected to the H1B posts.

probably some people conect their phases just not trusting and checking rotation because any of phases can be L1, it's necessary only to know wich is next after first connected, maybe more phases need equipment in order to not burn one or more coils. In Europe we use unitar delta-star transformers usually which make new installation simple even with less qualified personnel sent in villages, bare wires without color or order, at consumer installing a tri phase motor it's necessary to find out which one it's next from all 3 identical coloured phase wires,

I have a video about generator fuel pump that advice to run this motor first just to check the roation before energising all the induction motors on the plant.
