The £80 Mouse Problem Solved! USB Adapter & CF Card for Acorn Archimedes
Today, we're bringing my personal Acorn Archimedes into the 21st century with a couple of essential upgrades! In this video, I'll show you how to build a USB adapter that allows you to use a modern optical mouse on the Acorn Archimedes and install a CF card as a faster, more reliable storage solution. Original Acorn mice are tough to come by and can cost around £80 so I reached out to TruMouse.com to make this upgrade happen.
We’ll start by building the USB adapter on a heat plate with solder paste to handle the SMD components. With the adapter, I'll be able to connect any USB optical mouse to this vintage machine. After that, we’ll tackle storage by installing a compatible CF card. The Archimedes can be picky with CF adapters, so I’ll share a link to the one that finally worked!
For anyone following along, I’ve also created an HDF image of my finished setup with installed software, which you can download to try out on your own system.
In This Video:
Building a USB adapter for a modern mouse
Installing a CF card for expanded storage
Testing both upgrades on the Acorn Archimedes
Big thanks to TruMouse for helping make the mouse upgrade possible! You should've showed that lander game which came free with Archimedes, that thing shows the raw processing power of these machines, even though it's just basic polygons. I remember that thing being uber fast.
Yeah 👍 but I’m terrible at playing that game :) lol 😂 but Hank’s for comment but the graphics are amazing on that
@@Retro4u Everyone's bad at it, you literally crash every time, still worth showing.
@LukeAGuest I’m glad to hear that lol 😂. I thought it was just me. I’ll make sure I include it in my next Archie video had some A3000s. To repair
You always make very interesting videos. I like it!!!! Best regards !!!! C U soon on Commodore Party :)
Great vid 👍🏻 I bought the same mouse adaptor but haven't yet managed to design a 3D enclosure for it that works elegantly. Thnaks for the link to the HDD image! I tend to use a Raspberry Pi running Risc OS to read & write to CF cards if that's any use!
Let me in one of you design a enclosure :). The only thing to consider I found was the how close it was to the audio jack. Anyhow glad you like the vid not enough Archie stuff out there. :) thanks for your comment
@@Retro4u Will do.. good point about the audio jack; I was actually thinking of turning the adaptor into an 'inline' connector or dongle - next time I make a component order I'll include a 10 pin mini DIN and see what I can make up..
@@zx85super idea 💡. Let me know how you get on. Currently recapping the machine at the moment as the one by the mem had started to leak and smelt like kippers 😂
@@Retro4u 😮 Wow.. you've caught that a the right time.. good luck!
Would you please share your CF card image for some G-Drive or anything like that??
Hi the link should be in the description. Thanks for the comment
@@Retro4u amazing, cheers mate!
@@Kppotno problem 😊
I have a Mouster and it works on many of my retro computers (C64/128 atari 8-bits, 16 bits and Amiga. Might work on the Acorn too.
Never heard of it. I’ll give it a look 👀 up. thanks for the comment
Great video, mate .. Will a Mac mouse work? ... I am sure there was a 3 button one the bag of Mac stuff I gave you, mate .. could be wrong tho 🤔
They differnt unfortunately. Anyhow that mouse works fine with the adapter happy days :) thanks for the comment.
Don't see enough Archie anymore. Nice work.
I have more to do so look out for more on the way thank is for the comment
Waiting on my mouse adaptor to arrive. have a load of bits on order for my newly owned A3000. Should be a beast of a machine once its complete.
Yeah they are great underestimated machines good luck :) 😉
You have the skills , it's super cheap to upgrade the existing C64 brick you replace the 5v circuit with a 2 amp 5v charger 15 minute job .We all have one of those lying around unused.
Yeah I’m going. To do that. It’s in my plan I’ve seen many options will certainly sort it out. Thanks for comment
That has not been in a box all this time. This is someone's used Commoadore64 they acquired a box for. Hope they didnt sell this as "unopened."
Nahh lol 😂 it was sold as spares or repair 🧑🔧. The box is probably the original for the machine but they never had there serials on to match them. Thanks for the comment
@@Retro4u 😂
Quickshot were shite. I broke both the Quickshot 1 & 2. Also a TAC-2, and something else I can't quite remember - possibly one of the quickshot 2 variants. Finally got the Competition Pro and it was built to last.
Yeah I have some competition pro joysticks I use them on the Amiga. Great solid joysticks and a bug. Thanks for the comment
Always slightly annoys me that the Commodore logo seems to be the wrong way round on the top poly.
Yeah 👍 i never really noticed perhaps 🤔 it was mistake in the mould lol 😂 thanks for the comment
Contact cleaner or IPA would have been my first go before exchanging the Socket...The chip might have been dirty as well
Yeah I get that. But I hate those sockets :) . Thanks for the comment
That PCB is in fantastic condition!
Yeah lucky 🍀 it was caught when it was. Better than the one I have had to rebuild 5 tracks. But it’s working now. Thanks for the comment :)
cant stress how jealous i am right now :- ) these computers are now so rare there out the realms of small collectors tbh been waiting to snag 1 of these for a couple of years now but refuse to pay £250+ the whole retro scene is bonkers at the moment .
Hi 👋 they are out there just need to look 👀 are you UK or US based. I hear they go for more in US. Anyhow thanks for the Comment :)
@@Retro4u i'm UK based and in to all things retro gaming,at the ripe old age of 52 i've seen hundreds of computers and games consoles& collected a lot of them and sadly sold them before i realised what i had 😢i was lucky enough though to get an Atari 800xl boxed(which was one of my childhood machines) on ebay about a year ago for £100!! which so far is my bargain buy 😎 but the commodore 64 has so far eluded me,i try to stay from facebook(scambook) as its toxic and unreliable! i have seen a commodore 64 boxed recently but the buyer was asking £250,tbh too steep for me.but i get notifications from my friends when they pop up on vinted/ebay etc 👍so i guess its only a matter of time 😜.loved the video though and have subscribed to see what you're up to in the future👍
64’s aren’t rare. There’s tons of them for sale still. At least that’s the case in the UK. I got my boxed one for nothing.
Yeah I’m sure you will find one ☝️ just keep looking looking after all they where the best selling home computer so loads out there :)
@Mind-your-own-beeswax best selling home computer still a few out there if guess :)
Hello 😅
Hello 👋 thanks for comment and the watch :)
Interesting. I wouldn't have thought the socket would be to blame for no audio. Does the SID chip have left / right audio out pins that could be probed with an oscilloscope or an amplified speaker to test the chip itself before removing the socket?
Yeah 👍 there may have been something I could had probed. But those sockets are that bad you don’t gat anything from them. The reason I didn’t use the scope was I tried a working chip in that socket and it to was dead 💀 thanks for the comment. I have a 1541 with issues and I’ve tested the chips all good but again It has those chips so I’ll probably replacing the sockets on that will fix it
@@Retro4u Thanks for the explanation. I have a homemade audio probe which connects to a pair of amplified speakers, it's useful for checking without the hassle of using a scope.
What a great idea 💡. :)
Hi i had many hours of flight simulator on mine 1980_1990 .

Yeah !!!!!! we want more C64 video's :) .. Thats a nice clean box . Defo a keeper :)
@@8BitRetroReFix yeah thanks 🤩 I’m really happy with it just want to get the 8 Sid demos working lol 😂 those sockets are so bad lol. Thanks for the comment

Hi Neil, SYS64738 will reset the 64 when typed in on the basic screen. Works the same way as a reset button.
Hi thanks for that tip. Always good to know new stuff. Thanks for the comment and watch to :)
Wow really cool mate great find
Thanks! 🤩 yeah tbh it will be my personal c64 i think and the box into storage somewhere safe :) thanks for the comment
Wait what Christmas surely comes earlier every year. Lovely patina on that breadbin. I enjoyed watching this video.
Thank you I enjoyed making it. Just need to get that cart or work. And of course give that keyboard a good clean 🧼. Thanks for the comment :)
I'm not really into original packaging... but I must say: That box is in AMAZING condition. I don't know why, but I'm slightly jealous even. Congrats!
Yeah it was a nice fine tbh. It will probably go back into storage where it safe :) thanks for the comment
Great work! However, I think you should have imaged the Hard Drive replaced it with an SD card solution. That mechanical HD is sure to fail in the future.
That is the plan of course. I’m awaiting parts as you speak and another follow up video will happen. Thanks for comment
Great restoration Neil, the machine looks great :) I would love to see a follow-up video with the computer owner! Cheers!

Great video! The A3020 is my favourite Risc machine, useful having the built in IDE. Now they can run a DOM (Disk on Machine) solid state drive which makes them very zippy. Worth getting the USB mouse adapter - I use a wireless mouse with mine 😍
I will be building a usb adapter soon. In and other video and setting up a CF card. I did look at the Doms but could Not find one. But first I must finish repairing and setting mine up. Thanks for try comment
We remember the Archimedes and the Acorn Family fondly and often talk about why it didn't do better against the Amiga and ST's of the day. By the mid 90's x86 and PC's started their dominance. So we tend to think of these Acorns as some obscure footnote in computing history. Those of us who know better know that the ARM core designed for these machines would go on to run the entire modern world, every mobile phone, every router, TV's, set top boxes, Wi-Fi almost every embedded device contains an ARM core. By late 2023 over 300Bn had been produced, making it hands down in terms of volume the most successful design ever. Now in 2024 ARMs are accelerating production driving Apple's latest M4 cores and now servers - because of their dramatic super power efficiency. What an amazing legacy and remarkable foresight that team had and it all grew from that little Acorn!!!
@@dr_jaymz yeah amazing to think arm stood for Acorn risc machine originally. It’s definitely a machine I’m going to enjoy now I have one just need to fix it up. Can live next to my Amiga 1200 I’m sure they will be friends lol 😂 thanks for the info it’s true about pcs it’s what made me leave Amiga I saw xwing and thought just wow 🤩
@@Retro4u Indeed. ARM is one of the greatest computing success stories that the world (especially the Americans) doesn't really know about. It just quietly powers the world. In typical British fashion we've let it slip through our fingers such that the British quirky influence that made is so great in the first place becomes influenced by nations hell bent on ruining everything with corporate greed. I used to to write assembly demos on the ARM2, 250(as in the A3020, I had and now have another A3010) and ARM3, to me I loved how the instruction set fitted on one sheet of A4, it was a powerful thing. I could never get my head around CISC or always felt I was not using it to its full. The RISC OS desktop was a work of art, very complete OS from the ground up, that task bar would be stolen by Windows 95. You can run RISC OS today on raspberry PI and its remarkable how well its ages. It doesn't feel a day over 30 years old.
Nice restore. One minor addition The A3010 went on sale for £424.50 in October 1992 (I know because I remember mine costing that lol) The Amiga A1200 with which it was designed to compete was £399. The notion that "the Archimedes was massively more expensive than the equivalent Amiga"... certainly by these machines release in 1992 that wasn't really the case. The Atari Falcon 030 was £599 in 92/3 with 1MB RAM :o oof. Have had all 3. The A3010 was what I had back in the day, upgraded from a BBC when I went to high school. Got an A1200 and Got/Sold on a Falcon 030 as I never took to it sadly. All with their Strengths and weaknesses. After promising myself I wouldn't get Another A3010, I ended up with one. Stupidly sold my original when I went to uni in 1998. Anyway, nice video. My table of Acorn kit approves.
Thank you. I was using information I found online which said they where 600 and 800 with the hdd. I can remember seeing a falcon at the Atari show never had my hands on one. They are very rare machines as never really sold so well. I guess pcs were coming into gaming with the likes of doom and xwing etc all started to come out in 1993. I remember seeing xwing and thinking 🤔 just wow 🤩. Thanks for the info :). And thankyou for the comment :)
@@Retro4u you're most welcome 🤗 anyone who keeps these old machines going deserves support 😉 I'm also chuffed for the owner getting their machine sorted.
@@asm1yeah it best feeling to see someone revisit there old machine they haven’t seen in years. I guess we get attached to these somehow. I’m still learning this UA-cam lark well January coming up to 2 years but I enjoy doing it and at the moment it’s still a hobby lol 😂. Thanks for your comment and glad you enjoyed the video :)
Great video, I have fond memories of using the Acorn Archimedes A3020 in High School. A nice machine in which you rightfully said tried to compete in the home market with the likes of the Commodore Amiga 500 and Atari ST but was too expensive for most. It has some really good desktop publishing applications, and I fondly remember playing too much of Lander (Zarch) when I proabably should have been studying.
Thankyou. I was unfortunate not have them at school left as they where being rolled out. But loved the BBC masters we had. Thankyou for the comment
That cleaned up super well, never really used an archimedes
Me neither. They are a great machine tbh. Shame they where only for the rich kids lol 😂 thanks for the comment
Amazing!!!!
Many thanks. Was nice restore tbh . Very nice underestimated machine 😊t thanks for you comment
@Retro4u you from Leeds?
Staffordshire but I got to Leeds amongst meets sometimes. Thanks for the comment
Hello!
Hello 👋 you :). Many thanks for the comment and watch :)
I found my dads old amiga in my grand moms house in the garden in like on top of a box but Its rusty but not that rusty cant find the cables anywere think there gone
Oh dear :( it’s a shame when they get put in sheds
Could you let me know which heat plate you used? Or suggest alternative. It was great to see someone use paste and a hot plate, thanks
Hi 👋 sure no problem this is the model I use. Just found this amazing item on AliExpress. Check it out! £137.76 | UYUE 946C Heating Station Preheating Platform LCD Digital Display Preheating Station Solder Heat Plate Phone Screen Replace a.aliexpress.com/_EyOf3Gh You may find it cheaper if you shop around thanks for your comment :)
Wow, I used your link and purchased for £56:15 thank you
No probs glad it helped :) thanks again for your comment
Recognise that Mod straight away. Jester’s music and of course the World of Commodore demo off the Amiga.
That’s great hope you enjoyed it, thanks for you comment :)
Very nice build Neil :) That cartridge has some awesome features, I like it :) Cheers!
Yeah just need to get used to it. I can now swap kernels run side ect. I like it a lot thanks for the comment
Excellent build video! I hand soldered my SideKick64 builds, solder paste/heater plate certainly looks to be a solid alternative. When I installed my LCD screens I added a thin strip of double sided tape to the bottom edge to make sure it wouldn't short anything on the Raspberry Pi GPIO connector. I love my SideKick64 carts, amazingly versatile. I added image files for all of the cart files I have on the SD Card. When I load a cartridge, I get a nice graphic of what has been selected. Check out the OneLoad64 collection, the ZIP file includes SideKick64 thumbnails for all of the CRT files. You just need to add the .TGA image files into the CRT folder on the SD card along with the .CRT files. I did find that I needed to split them into two folders (A-L & M-Z) as there was an issue with the SideKick64 locking up with over 5500 files in the one folder.
Hi I’m so glad you mentioned this. I just installed the one load and did indeed install the pics but it would not browse locked up. I guessed it was the amount of files so I’ll split them thankyou for that. Also the tape is a good shout I do similar with the pi storm. I am still trying to get the tuneful8 running managed to enable the 8 Sid’s but it plays all distorted for some reason. Anyhow the tips I’ll mention then next video :). Thanks also for the comment
@@Retro4u To use the emulated SIDs you need to run a wire between the SID CS pin on the SideKick64 and pin 8 on the SID socket. It's just a matter of configuring the addresses of each of the emulated SID chips to match what is needed for The Tuneful 8 demo. One thing I did find is that the audio output from the Raspberry Pi is a bit low compared to other "line level " audio devices. It is an amazing demo, previously only playable on an Ultimate 64 motherboard.
@michaelcarey I did connect the lead to pin 8. Where will it find the addresses so I can input it them. Really looking forward to playing that demo. Yeah the cartridge is amazing just needs more info out there on how to use it. I will of course do another video soon on the features so it helps future people. Just need to learn myself lol 😂 thanks again
I had the 1512 SD with no HDD. My drive A was on the right and it definitely booted into DOS from one of those colourful floppies. I forget which one. I think it was the yellow one tho, and Ability office suite was on the red one. I think. It was a very long time ago and I've had dozens of PCs since...
The disks were great in bright colours. they where popular machines due to the price. I mean pcs where becoming popular and Amstrad where very well priced at the time I remember compared to the likes of ibm ect. I remember commodore machines by escom I think or I could be wrong. Thanks for the comments
It booted off the red disk in mine
@hectorurdiales4570 yeah i think that’s is correct just my discs has died. I did make some later on with the greaseweazle but Hank’s for your comment
@18:39 Be VERY careful with alcohol (or any other fluids) around LCD displays; the fluid may get between the display layers and leave ugly blodges on your screen.
Yeah I agree when it gets between the layers. I see what you mean lol 😂. Never noticed again more concerned about trying to film lol 😂. But thanks and good spot I was lucky as it works fine perhaps 🤔 still having the protective film on helped but good spot. Thanks for the comment :)
I have one of these and thought it showed promise, but there doesn't appear to have been any development on it for the last year two. It would be nice if it was possible to create your own menus, for example, on my Kung Fu Flash I have a folder for favourites, but I haven't figured out a way of doing that on the Sidekick64. Focus seems to have moved to the Sidkick Pico.
I really like the cart came across it whilst browsing the internet. I know there is the ultimate cart but you can’t build them and I can’t justify the price. I agree this could do so much more. I think they have integrated support for the sidkick so perhaps there has been an update. I did not check the date :(. but I get our point I’ve not been able to get the 8 Sid chips to work to play the tune full 8 which is one the main reasons I built this. Did you try this ? Thanks for your comment
A word about SMD component's J-STD-033 - this is the electronics industry standard for handling, packing, shipping and use of Moisture, Reflow and Process sensitive devices. Baking and moisture - these IC devices are JDEC Level-1-260C-UNLIM, which means they are NOT generally moisture sensitive and have unlimited life in the open air provided the humidity is at ≤30°C/85% RH. If living near the ocean in tropical climates, you should consider baking them for 24-48 hrs at 125 degC to remove any excess humidity, otherwise you risk 'popcorn' fracturing of the packaging. Straight up baking on a hot plate can heat stress the devices and risk poor solder joints. JEDEC-020 shows the classification reflow profile to be used for the device MSL classification. 260C is the maximum re-flow temperature, but the temperature profile involves soak/reflow and cooling zones, which are typically computer controlled. It's not too difficult to retool an Infrared toaster oven, under Arduino control to do just this. ua-cam.com/video/rZyP5G4Wfm0/v-deo.html PS: Save yourself time end effort ordering a solder mask with your PCB orders.
Ok interesting to know. Thanks for your comment :)
Great video, amazing job, well done, C64 Rulez
Somehow I thought you would this build. Thanks for the commment
@@Retro4u need PCBWay and BOM
Hey bud not sure if you managed to sort this but sometimes the carbon on the button pad has worn and no longer bridges the connection, chuck some carbon pen stuff on the on button membrane and see if it helps 👍 i love a lynx
Hi 👋 it’s on the burner so to speak. I did check the pads. Also replaced all the diodes and resistors in a pack. But the machine turns on now but its voltage is to high so turned off before I broke the cpu lol 😂. Thanks for the suggestion though and comment
@@Retro4u ahhh fair ok ahh the joys of 35 yr old old tech ! Lol 😂 isit the voltage regulator board going mad?
I am thinking of modding it to fit a voltage regulator as it just doves voltage through a diode to reduce it weird Atari magic lol 😂
@@Retro4u nice!
awesome Neil
Thankyou :) and thanks for the comment
It was definitely a pleasure to watch you enjoying the hot plate soldering. I most likely make the same delightful place, when hot plate soldering. Dispensing the solder paste might be easier with a dispenser, that has a screw plunger, that you just turn to more evenly dispense the solder paste. I am using such a tool. Big PCBs tend to wrap slightly on the hot plate. In this case, I have my hot air station to support the process a bit. I too have an ultrasonic bath, which I rarely use. Crystals, reed relays etc, hate ultrasonic. Most of the time, I use an ESD brush set, a lot of isopropanol and an electric duster (=blower) to dry the isopropanol off of the pcb. The whole process of heating up the water, degassing it and the cleaning process taking a couple of minutes of ultrasound is not so comfortable. With isopropanol, it is done in two minutes or even less.
Never heard of a screw plunger 🪠 will look them up thankyou. A electric duster I have never heard of. Yeah never gets old watching solder melt 😂. Thanks for the comment and suggestions
@@Retro4u An electric duster is actually a vacuum cleaner reversed. It blows air, which really helps to get rid of the isopropanol for cleaning. Usually, I have a jar and a spray bottle with isopropanol. First, I brush the pcb with the isopropanol in the jar. Then, I rinse with iso from the spray bottle, then dry with kitchen tissue, then spray iso again and finally blow the iso away with the blower and brush with a clean big ESD brush.
