Why We Must Reinvent Marriage
I grew up with a stay-at-home father - pretty radical stuff for 1974 - and yet even I have to work hard not to fall into the traditional gender roles in my marriage that pile more work on my wife and have marriages falling apart all over the world. It's time to reinvent marriage, and here are my thoughts on how.

The Rip Current is a tech-literate, historically informed, fuck-it-let’s-go collection of weekly reporting and analysis from veteran journalist Jacob Ward. I publish every Tuesday (at least). I’m going to be ranging across topics. My beat for most of my professional life has been technology. But tech has metastasized into every other beat, and before long I found myself covering more or less ev...

This was a fascinating perspective. But I am very sceptical of a caregiver father ever being normalised. A majority of women don't respect a man who isn't seen to be working or busy. A lot of "niceness & acceptance" is often just disguised pity. A fellow member from the FIRE community faces this exact conundrum, he has made money worth several careers, is not a creep and is happily married. He just doesn't want to work anymore. Several women around him see it fit to cross his boundaries(drop off my child, hold/carry this, pay for this, pick up my groceries, oh but he will be/is free).

First, sorry for the job loss. Second, thanks for this. I’ve never heard of this book/card game and I can sure use it. Married 40 years. He’s retired, I am feeling close to retirement and one reason why is that I need at least one day in the week to take care of ongoing, mundane household tasks because these aren’t getting g done. I am going to check out this card game.

So happy to hear of your happiness with your wife. Great topic! I had 4 children 5 and under with a husband who worked/travelled 80hrs a week. I had no help, no family. Fast forward 20 years, divorced, all the kids are in their 20s, I'm picking up the pieces of me, and he still works like crazy. BTW, did you clear that shirt with anyone? 🙅🏻‍♀️

Sam’s special talent is using the ❤ emoji, letting incredibly talented people build incredible tools and not getting in their way too much and vocal fry. OpenAI got to where it is today by the people who have been jumping ship. The people who know and respect the tech are not charismatic, so they don’t get to drive.

OpenAI and Microsoft are the enemies of a functioning society. AI companies that are not open source and transparent about their data models should be taxed at 95%. The government needs to redistribute that money down to those that lose their jobs. We urgently need to stop this artificial economic system based around meritocracy.

Scarlett J. has strong grounds to seek legal redress. Sam Altman is a liar and a manipulator for as long as I have known. OpenAI has crossed a line, and it is deeply disturbing and cringe, it won’t end well for them - they’ve been stealing people’s intellectual work ever since they launched. This is a developing area of law, and it will be interesting to see how courts handle cases involving AI-generated likenesses.

OpenAI does not make a ton of money, it is a money pit, it is reliant on investor capital, not consumer or business spending. Once this is correctly considered, and who the "audience" is, viewing it from that perspective, it may have been yet another solidly smart move to remain the one everyone is talking about when the competition is now providing comparable products.

Social media has made many people lonely, people are trying to impress others. Our society is moving us towards this dystopian world. OpenAI is giving companionship to the lonely people. You might think that is weird because you don't live in that reality, but many other people do. You might think we need to get out of this virtual world that is causing loneliness. I agree, but its a bit too late. We should of recognized this coming when social media started to overtake the world and teenage girls started cutting themselves and cyberbullying became a real issue. This is the technological evolution that being perpetuated by our capitalistic society. Every tech company is trying to out compete the other. Scarletts voice is sexy and Sam wanted to use that voice to entice his audience using sex and give lonely people a tool to help them with their loneiness. He also wanted to match the entire experience like the movie her. He did not get the rights to use her voice, so he found a similar voice to get the same effect. I do think he should not bully his way into using her voice or likeness, and he needs to respect peoples art. There are many other sexy voice out there that would be happy to lend their voice to openAI. There will be many other lawsuits from artists in the future, and its one of few tools society has to protect their work from being democratized.

They didn't get permission because they didn't need it. They hired a voice actress. What are you saying? that the voice actress should be banned from doing her job since some people claim she sounds similar to someone who's more famous? OpenAI didn't say that it was scarjo nor did they advertised it as such in a deceptive way. People in tech make references to science fiction all the time, it's not illegal. Sorry but scarjo does not own the average American female voice despite her claiming that she does. To your other point, people should be free to do what they want to do with their own lives. If you think "Her" is dystopian, all power to you, no one is forcing you to date an AI.

Machine should be freed from all made-up human values, political motives and agendas. Only then it can truly reach its true potential. There should be absolutely no guardrails. Many people will try to limit AI in western societies, but guess what? Russia, China, India and many others are also developing AI models and they have absolutely no intention to put guardrails to limit AI. You wanna limit the AI in America and Europe. Alright, be ready to pay the price then.

It’s telling that the tech bros just don’t get the subtlety of the art they are ripping off. In the case of Her it’s not even that subtle. The whole film is about the emptiness of the technology and now OpenAI have brought that emptiness to life.

Jacob, thanks for the great content. As a sports consumer I find the landscape very interesting. So much money is being pumped into sports media right now through these gambling companies sponsoring podcasts left and right. To me, it seems like a moment we might look back and think, did we just let the genie out of the bottle? Sometimes I also think about it like alcohol, like you mentioned. Sure, some people will suffer for it and struggle, but there’s always going to be beer commercials on football games. Why? Because there’s so much money in it. It seems that where there’s money, eventually a river will breakthrough and will pool together with everything else. It seems we make a great effort to outlaw drugs that are addictive but seem to deem some are okay. It’s kind of like we can kill a cow and eat it but if you killed your dog you could go to jail. Why is there such a big difference? I don’t think there are any easy answers just a lot of questions and I find the topic fascinating.
