VW T5 Sliding Door Rail Cover Fitment - HOW TO
A small job but not any less important on the quest to improve my 2008 Volkswagen Transporter T5 (pre facelift). Todays challange is to make the Sliding door rail cover fit like factory since the clips long give up the ghost and arent holding like they should any more, also due to the poor fitting it is also rubbing the sliding door runner. I will show you HOW TO remove the panel, replace the clips and refit back onto your van to get it looking mint again!

Time to strip all the undertrays off, give it a good old clean up and asses what is needed, how rusty is my 26 year old van? Also is there another vehicle with more undertrays its ridiculous! Cleaning back, converting and treating any corrosion using ...

Not mentioning whether the fuel system needs priming or not after reinstalling the pump on the engine => downvote
Pretty sure I say about cycling the ignition several times to re prime the fuel system?
Nice job.
Cheers bud 👍
Those plastic fittings are crap from the factory, nothing to do with age.
This is very true!
Just did the same with my 2009 jumper. There was a lot less rust. But these beauties need some love and attention to last. Good vid, cheers
Yes indeed I think we all forget that pre 2010 was quite a long time ago now especially with how well modern vehicles survive
Best undersealer I've ever used was made from a tin of paint-on roof leak sealer thinned with a little petrol (enough to make it paintable). The stuff CAN be painted on direct from the tin but goes on far too thick however a little thinning and it goes on far easier. Real cheap and VERY, VERY effective.
Is that the bitumen style paint?
@@RJW_Customs Specifically it was 'Thompson EMERGENCY Roof Repair Mastic' at £15.50 for a 750ml tin - thin to 50% (or more) and it covers 'acres'. Sticks like stuff to a bedsheet - including loose rust (though I always avoid doing that) and seems impervious to stone chips. Did a Jeep chassis and no breakthough after 3 years. Worth a go.
@kellyeye7224 if its like the bitumen style paint I've used before I can imagine it does do quite a good job 👍
@@RJW_Customs Best thing about it is that the only prep you need is to scrape away loose rust. Then slap it on. Nothing else. Suggest you try a patch on another vehicle and see how long it lasts. BTW I only used petrol as thinners as I didn't have any other - white spirit would probably be better (or safer).
@@kellyeye7224my only concern would be that yes it's covering up the rest and potentially slowing down it getting any worse but will it full neutralise it. I reckon still a rust convertor and then that intop would be the best option I did go belts and braces with mine and it probably didn't need everything I put on it
Nice work! Did you ever consider lanoguard when you were doing this? I’ve heard good things
Thank you, I've used lanoguard before. This is my own opinion but I feel lanoguard is a very good and easy DIY application but I feel it's better for a vehicle that hasn't already got corrosion. So something new or freshly restored. Put lanoguard ontop and it will repeal the water. As for dealing with existing corrosion I don't think it's the right stuff
@ interesting! That’s a very good point
Strong vid 💪 comment for the comment gods
Cheers dude
What colour have you done your wheels. Ive the same in silver on a black t5.1. I like the colour against the black. Great video pal first video i watched and now im look through all of them 👍
They are meant to be the same colour as the bronze that Rota use for there wheels, but I went with a gloss finish rather than satin. They look a bit lighter than the rota colour but this might be the gloss finish. Cheers for the kind words, hopefully you enjoy some of the others
I spy a B5 Avant in the background! Came for the Transporter, stayed for the B5 😂
You have spotted correctly! If you look back through my videos there's one on the audi when I first brought it back
@@RJW_CustomsGreat! I'm interested in work on all types of cars, but I own a B5 Avant myself, a B6 Avant and a C5 Allroad. Will check that video out when I've watched the Transporter chassis video 👍🏻
@@4RingsRetro your in for a treat 😂
Great job on the underbody rust treatment/prevention.👍✌️
Thank you 🙏
Great video, very thorough, this is something i need to do on my van.
Thank you, it's a long but satisfying job
Just found your channel.. I've also got a T5 with the same wheels.. What tyre size do you use.. Mine is lowered and go through tyres like mad.. Always wear on the insides...
Hi, have you got the staggered setup? So the wider ones on the rear also? I run a 245/45/19 on the front and a 275/40/19 on the rear. I found my rears scrubbed really badly until I adjusted the tracking on the rear
@@RJW_Customs yes mine are also staggered.. Can you get the front and back tracking done? My rears toe out at the bottom
@stripfix1979 yes you can, the front is adjustable in the normal way on the tie rods. The rears have got eccentric bushes on suspension arms which should give you enough adjustment. Failing that you can get new poly bushes with more adjustability
The moment in the video at 8.00 mins a Spitfire flew over and you never even flinched 😮 .. what a noise 😂
@gedmcconville369 I'm very lucky to live right next to goodwood motor circuit so I get to enjoy that noise daily. I probably take it for granted now!
@@RJW_Customs ah that makes total sense.. lucky boy 😀👌
Top job do you fancy doing mine 😜👍🏻🇬🇧
Ha ha if only I had the facilities to do it I would offer it up as a service 👍
What age is your van? Ive never looked under mine - im now wondering what lurks beneath
Mines a 2008, so quite late for a pre facelift. I reckon that bit of rot behind the rear wheel arches is gonna be pretty common on most vans, but alot of people probably never drop that guard
Top work. 👏
Cheers bud
Nice work .Did pretty much same with my 2009 2.5 .But used lanoguard. Hope my bus last .Having boost issues now.😂.Got to .Yours turned out more pro than mine.Great effort
Cheers bud, yeah I've used lanoguard on freshly built stuff before, it's very easy to use! Oh no what you thinking boost leak or turbo issues?
Not sure hope just boost pipe .maybe intercooler .Also runs a bit lumpy some times.Had ac priblem last year mine was a leaking pipe watched your vid on that. 😂 @RJW_Customs
Need someone who good with vcds.😂
@@davidmarsden1681even though a different problem hopefully it helped
@@davidmarsden1681if your loosing boost I would first start with a smoke test on the intake system to see if you've got any leaks
Great video.
Thank you 🙏
My '56 plate is very jealous.
Get on it! Save the pre facelifts!
Nice job as ever Robbie
Cheers! Thank you again for letting me get your yard all sticky!
I would plastidip the piano black parts of the leather wheel to make them fit in better. Or see if they that be swapped with the unpainted ones from the Up wheel.
Each to there own, I prefer the look of the leather and the piano black and would rather upgrade other parts of the interior to match. Otherwise If I wanted it to look more stock I would have stayed with the standard Up wheel
I have a blue golf estate as well lol , I got classes Porsche 911 wheels
Golf estates for the win!
Great video, very useful. My unit drains the battery of my 2009 T5. I heard that piggybacking off another fuse that is only live when van running was the way to solve it, but you didn't do anything like that - did you have another solution and/or have you found it an issue? Cheers!
Hi and thank you. No battery drain issues. The live I connect to on the back of the switch is only live when the ignition is on so in theory would be the same as piggybacking a fuse that is only live when the van is on. Is yours still a pre face lift van or is it a facelift at 2009?
@@RJW_Customs thanks for the reply! It's pre-facelift I think (tall grills). You connected the live feed to the unit to the heated seat switch right, so only when that switch is on AND the ignition does the unit get power, is that right?
@allanyoung4221 no, so it gets it's permanent live feed from the original radio wiring, it then gets its ignition feed (which powers the unit on and off with the ignition) from the traction control switch which only gets power when the ignition is turned on
@@robbiewingate awesome, thanks!
naughty burnout 🔥
My foot slipped honestly sir!
Ta mate.. I'll have look at mine over wkend. I've got no power at motor or resistor either
No problem, hopefully it's the same thing!
How does it fair when the suns out? I know some are hard to see because of reflection. I have a pioneer and it's impossible to see when it's bright out.
I didn't find it too bad this summer, I know people do struggle with some and you can get a little hood to out shade over it
@@RJW_Customs yeah, I have a pioneer and it's crap, even with the shade. Going to look at the tilt screen ones.
That guy at the end shouting "Love It" 😂
He isn't wrong!
Nice video bud 👍👍👍, get on and ls it !! You got loads of time ! Lol
Cheers dude, ha ha just need to find s pot of money and then I will get it in there!
Hi, great vid. Will help me with the dab install. Did the mic come.with the head unit or is it a separate purchase? If separate, what exactly do I need to look for please. Many thanks
Thank you very much! The microphone came with mine but it was just a generic in car microphone if yours doesn't come with one
Such a good weekend, hope you do it in that thing again next year mate. Also, good to meet you along the way 😊 - Tom from the cr** supra
Definately wanna do it again just feel it should wait for the ls swap. I'm trying to convince paul to do it in his impreza wagon! Cheers for convoying with us!

Now that's an idea!
Good idea and nice neat job, get on 🤙
Cheers man
What's the product you use for glueing the USB Into the plastic case? Thanks
Araldite is what I used. It's a 2 part epoxy
What colour was the wire to splice into on the traction control button?
If I'm honest I can't remember now I would have to pull the radio out to double check
@@RJW_Customs just done mine and the positive in the ASR connector was the bottom black one
Have you got a part number for the sensor?
Yes it is 1J0 907 543 A
@@RJW_Customs awesome thank you
What the set up on the engine and trans?
Hi, so 700r4 with a shift kit but other than that standard. Engine wise it's a 350 small block, 4 bolt mains, stock bottom end as far as I'm aware, comp cams xe268h camshaft, with matching valve springs. Stock heads but some one at some point has had a go at porting them. Edelbrock dual plane I take, 750 cfm holley vacuum secondary carb, electronic ignition, hedman shorty headers. I think that's about it
So glad You found some power down low!
It's where we all want it!
Solid 💪 💪 💪
Thank you 🙏
Nice. I was thinking peak power would be around the 290 mark so that's probably around 350-360 at the crank, which is a really nice street engine. Well done on dialing it in within 10% too. Did you change the timing at all to see if it pushed the numbers a little higher?
Cheers roger! Yeah I wqs happy with how I got it, yeah we played with the timing a bit, initially we advanced it a touch and gained a little bit up top, then we retarded it a bit oast were I had it and thays where it gained the most up top but also all the extra it gained down low and across the board
Hi mate, I’ve done the same in my T5 09 plate and the airbag light is always on, changed the loom for a new one and still the same. Any ideas ? Thanks
Hi, if you did it with it live and it saw the airbag not connected at any point, the stored code will put the airbag light on until it is cleared using diagnostic software
