4 x Golden Globe Awards Winner Emilia Perez

The hottest movie in the awards circuit. A tale filled with love, admiration, a critique of the modern state of Mexico, transitioning, and most of all a complete misunderstanding of all of it. Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Perez (2024) spins a yarn of forgettable, lackluster, racism and transphobia in musical form. We struggle to understand why this movie is getting so much attention. Marcy exaspera...

Amo Las Malas

Las Malas by Camila Sosa Villada is a story about invisibility and the breadth within the travestis. We cover the book but there is no way to spoil this. Give it a read. Marcy talks about one Pod Jon...

Thanks so much for taking time out of your day to let strangers on the Internet know you didn't watch Letterman. Do you always click on videos about things you don't like just so you can let people know you don't like those things?

I couldn’t stand Leno. I liked a few of his bits, like headlines…and his chuckling guitar player…but that was about it. Smug bastard. Letterman was the greatest, and the Conan. Both were great with their guest-interactions. All three are infinitely better than any host these days.

Idk, it’s cool to me that a human has to lose his humanity to become a better person. I find that interesting as a jumping off point for further character development and not as a narrative conclusion in itself. 😅 I agree with your thoughts about the pacing of the show! S1 tried to squeeze a lot in to a relatively short season, then S2 tried to squeeze in even more info and didn’t really succeed at containing everything. A lot of the emotional denouements just didn’t land, imo, but I know most people don’t feel that way. Louis was given so much depth wrt his family and racial identity. I don’t feel the writers were as considerate about virtually every other character. A lot of contradictory motivations and patchy arcs. That being said, I think they were pretty clear that Madeleine really wasn’t a ‘sympathizer’ but a starving woman looking for food and a moment of warmth amongst horror (and punishment of women who had slept with nazis, for any reason, was a thing that happened exactly like it happened to Madeleine). But I also like what Princess Weekes said about it making very little sense that Claudia would be attracted to a white woman to begin with, seeing as how traumatic her existence among white people was in S1. But that circles back around to inconsistent characterization, I think.

I'm back! I just heard Camila's new film based on her book "Tesis sobre una domesticación" will be premiered at the Chicago Film Festival. You should check it out. I read the book and it was probably not as harsh as Las Malas but way more violent and sophisticated. Fun fact: she acts in the film

I agree with the previous commenters, more research and note taking needed to be taken before this discussion was had. Anne Rice’s work is very complex and does have some often uncomfortable aspects to it but it should be represented accurately. The show has changed a lot of things and introduced new stuff. The racial aspects has added such nuance that I don’t think many are adequately explored.

Yes I’m a black women and I read those books since I was a teenager… To second the first comment, that conversation is what I’m afraid will happen if the show becomes more mainstream after it’s available this fall on Netflix… it’s a really complex show and you have to paid close attention to the details if you have not read the book. People often fall into the trap of not considering what those characters are (vampires ) and their circumstances. There are so many mistakes in how you recall the show too, for example, Madeleine was poor and alone by the time WW2 happened, and she slept with the nazi officer to have food and money, etc. You could say that doesn’t excuse her sleeping with a nazi, that what the neighbours thought when he didn’t intervene while she was attacked… here the best analysis of the show have ever seen: ua-cam.com/video/qPhgnNG5vm4/v-deo.htmlsi=RzKx9DDT21p1f_5H Sorry i don’t want to come off as condescending but I care a lot about the source material.

Hey @MarieFloreghenry thank you for the comment! I appreciate the pain of seeing art be dwindled down a bit for a larger audience. One Think I love about this series is the complexity. I did see that video essay. @Seriesable did a great job in it! Love the memory discussion. You aren't being condescending. I see your passion. I would love to hear your thoughts on vampires and their circumstances.
