What Are Aniline, Semi-Aniline, Pigmented, and Corrected Grain Leathers?
How I use these terms to shop for leather online. I also talk about:
-Types of tanning: vegetable tanned and chrome tanned
-Sections of skin leather comes from: full grain, top grain, and split grain
-Methods of imparting colors to the hide: aniline, semi-aniline, and pigmented
-Ways to change the texture and appearance: corrected grain and embossing
-The differences these changes make to the way the leather wears in/how it responds to scratches
-Things I don't worry about when buying leather

How to Make Pocket Facings, Zipper Pockets, and Slip Pockets for a Bag Lining (Drafting/Placement)
Переглядів 1392 роки тому
I use nylon zipper by the yard, nylon pack cloth (similar to waterproof canvas), and faux leather to demonstrate how I ignore pattern instructions and maximize pockets on bag interiors. I draft/make my own zipper pockets with facings and place slip pockets on the same side of the bag. I also demo the "zipper opens to the right" convention.

I Was Using The Wrong Needle/Thread Combination and it Caused Problems

I sew 2 ounce leather using Amman Tex 90 poly thread which is awesome! I used the wrong size needle and the wrong type of needle and I kept shredding my thread and causing my machine to shudder/thump. I got some video of my mistakes!

Ottertex Waterproof Canvas PVC versus PU backing (Update: The PU version changed, do not recommend)
Переглядів 5 тис.3 роки тому
I've been curious about how the PU WPC behaves compared to the usual PVC, so I bought both! Update: The PU backed waterproof canvas came in in silver. It's very stiff and I like the PVC backed much better. I'm disappointed in the order. I'm going to try ordering a 420 denier version next, that someone recommended in a bag making group: www.canvasetc.com/product/420-denier-nylon-fabric-khaki-60/.

Thanks so much, this is so good, will be my technique forever. Genius
Thanks! This is a great idea. If you would have made that open section longer, the last top stitching would have been less obvious?
Really enjoyed your video thanks for sharing, got to try this out!
If you are ever in the market for more Mora colors, we at Serial Bagmakers in Europe sell our own custom color selection in our shop. Same shipping rate (up to 4,5 kg, the price is €49). We ship to the USA on a daily base.
Hi Auden, which material is more waterproof? 600 denier PVC or 420 denier PU? And which one is more expensive? Thank you!
Where do you get your needles?
Hmmm ... I wonder where that nice Auden Healy lady went? She makes the most watchable videos. I bet she's busy working on some great stuff for us. Hope all is well.
I have been looking for this technique! I had found instructions for a no raw edge strap but couldn't figure out how to make it an adjustable strap. Thank you for this brilliant video.
wawak has definitely improved the quality since this video
Thank you! I will have to make another Wawak hardware order to check out their newer stuff. That's very exciting to hear about them.
Hello, i have a question. Did you have burn test the pigmented leather? If yes then is it smelled like burned leather or like burned plastic smell?
Sorry I should have talked about bonded leather! What I have in the video would smell like leather if I burned it but when I was first buying leather I did get bonded leather and it was plastic smelling. I don't usually burn test, but I did for that bonded leather because I knew something was wrong with it. Since I made this video I found tanner.leatherstein on instagram and he has so much information about leather that I wish had been available to me earlier. I think he also has a UA-cam.
June 30 2023 superb. U and your husband should consider doing a podcast. Do u have FB, website, or blog? If so please add to info. Hope u r well
Thank you! I have an instagram but I don't really post there. I appreciate your comment on my video, it is very kind!
That 1/8" seam allowance is pretty tight. Did you run it on that little cylinder arm machine in the background?
No, but I could/would! I do use that machine. I have a narrow foot on my flat bed machine that I bought from my sewing machine dealer. I leave it on all the time, so I never have to change sewing machine feet for zippers or straps, etc. you can also put down a magnet on the throat plate to act as a seam guide or just use a slightly larger seam allowance. I don't think the sides of the strap would lift too much with the larger seam allowance if you needed it. Better than losing the strap!
You are So Lucky to have a supportive husband who helps you narrate. My husband would Never. Nice couple. ❤
Thank you! I feel very lucky
Hello 🖐️😃
I appreciate you both taking the time to do this. I'm new to bag making and about to order Mora based on your review. Thanks!
I really hope you like it! I've made 2 backpacks and a handbag so far with it. I'm really enjoying it - Mora is my favorite faux leather/vinyl I've worked with.
I got the same machine. I like your videos. Keep it up !😊
Thank you!
Very good 🌸
Thanks!
@@audenhealey2643 Do you have a page on Facebook?
I appreciate your short, straightforward videos. Happy sewing!
Thank you!
your Singer 201-2 sounds like it is laboring and needs some attention......
Thanks for watching! Do you mean at minute 9:55 on the 201-2 video when I fill the bobbin? What do you think it needs?
You’re going to need a backed ruler utility knife Stanley knife aka box cutter craft knife contact adhiesive/ cement, bonded nylon and uv is what I use yeah keep your scissors seperate I got a leather pair I need to make a sheath for and also get a lighter and a few hand needles and a stitching pony mallet and punches you’ll get there. Keep it up
Thanks for watching! I work with 2 ounce upholstery leather making handbags on a sewing machine. I would add those items you mentioned for hand-sewing vegetable tanned leather, but not for the type of work I'm doing. I do occassionally use a lighter on my threads.
Love your videos they are very helpful thank you
Thank you!
Appreciate you thanks, love your husband's voice! You are awesome, new subscriber 🥰
Thank you so much!
This is great! 💖
Thank you for this! It answers my questions about how the Rex and Mora are different. Have you had a chance to sew with either yet? (I have a Heavy Duty Singer domestic.)
Yes! I made a bag with Mora. It's the easiest vinyl to work with that I've ever used and turning the bag was so easy. I did it on my industrial, but I've done lots of vinyl and cork bags on my Janome HD3000 domestic and it does great. I think Mora will do really well on your domestic. I use microtex size 16 needles.
Could you put a link on where you got your servo motor? And did you do anything else to slow it down other than the servo motor straight to the sewing machine? Thanks
Consew CSM3000 Sewing Machine... www.amazon.com/dp/B01N1L1P7G?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share I don't personally use speed reducers. I do have a newer machine with a needle positioner and that is *great*.
@@audenhealey2643 awesome thanks!!
@@audenhealey2643 hey I looked up the link that you supplied, and at the top it says it's a one horsepower motor, and then down in the description it says it's a 3/4 horsepower motor. Do you know which horsepower one you received? Thanks a lot for the help!!
@@wilsonroyer5787 I got 1hp.
Ok thanks
Is it true that Louis Vuitton bags uses cotton canvas treated with PVC?
I'm not an LV expert, but many of the monogram and damier bags are coated canvas with vachetta leather trim and accents. I haven't been able to find a canvas that is similar in feel yet (I would like to work with some on a bag), but cork is a nice substitute.
There are many weights and types of coated canvas
Wow. Amazing! Where can get one like that. Tq
I know this was a year ago, but my favorite is wawak.com.
Sorry, if you're looking for the zipper jig, maybe etsy. Someone is always 3D printing and selling them
For notions, try: wawak.com For leather: hidehouse.com My favorite youtube channels so far: Simply Classic, Myth Leather Co., Lauren Mormino, Dig the Bag I mentioned Uncle George in this video, I do not order leather from them anymore.
I was literally just wanting to know more about this yesterday and couldn't find anything
I'm glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching! I asked a lot of questions on leatherworker.net and on facebook Myth Co bag maker group is really helpful, but Garth and Shelby have a Myth Leather youtube channel also and they post themselves making bags. What are you interested in making?
@@audenhealey2643 bags and wallets but the leather I bought wasn't very suitable and it's not exactly cheap enough to just buy until I find what I need
Thank you!! Finally a real answer.
You're welcome! I'm glad it was helpful. Nicole of Dig the Bag has been using PU backed canvas so I really wanted to try it. Interfaced quilting cotton isn't quite what I'm looking for in a liner, but sometimes PVC canvas is too heavy...hopefully PU canvas is the answer! Thanks for watching!
With upholstery, vinyl and leather; I use an office stapler to hold seams together for sewing.
Yes! This is a great idea because the staples are in the seam allowance. Do you take them out after you sew or leave them in?
@@audenhealey2643 I take them out. They could rust if you leave them in. Its quick, and you don't have all those bent sewing pins.
