Great stuff! Although I've often felt Trey's use of syncopation, I've never analyzed it like that or had it explained. Thanks! Stuff about repeating motifs and question/answer is great too. I often do the "Happy birthday trick": 1) play a line 2) same line, slight variation 3) very different line, unresolved 4) return to the motif and resolve. Anyway, thanks for the very useful lesson!

I LOVE the attention to detail and explanation of each "chord" you outline in the progression. It's deceptively simple with just being 2 chords, but the more I try my hand at jamming on it the more I come to notice and appreciate the little nuances (like you mentioned here) that take a phrase from noodling to texture. Wow! Great lesson from the master himself! I have been teaching music since right around the time that Story of the Ghost came out and most of what he says here is very, very similar to what I tell my students. Trey is a genius and on top of that he's got a Master's degree in music whereas I only have a Bachelor's in music, but the theory he talks about in this video is taught in most colleges and universities. The 1st thing that blew my mind is that Ravel's Le Tombeau de Couperin is a piece I've been listening for a long time. I play guitar & studied Classical Guitar as well as Jazz in college. There's lots of classical guitarists who play a guitar arrangement of Le Tombeau de Couperin which is what I've been listening to for over two decades. The 2nd thing that struck me is that I ALSO tell my students that all music boils down to only three chords. All other chords can be thought of as substitutes for one of those three chords. Finally, the 3rd thing that put a smile on my face is that he mentioned what I teach my students as three chord families: We've got Minor chords, Major chords and the third chord family is the Dominant family which I call a hybrid of major & minor within the same chord. I also learned a couple of new things, but for the most part it was cool seeing how Trey's point of view regarding music theory is very similar to my POV. Thx for uploading these lessons!

Hey Chris , the sharpening of the third one half step in the F major chord to A sharp, makes it the F sus right? ? Also where does the C come into the F sus / C? Those C notes your using are a part of the F chord anyway so is it because you're not using the F root note and your lowest note is a C instead?

He plays it differently depending on the year, but especially on the studio version there’s slide from the 3rd fret to 5th fret on 5th string and it kinda alternates light staccato picking on that not and 3rd on 4th string
