    1993 - I was live at Blackpool Tower watching Steve Regal against the 6’11” 40 stone (600lbs) Giant Haystacks. - Regal ko’d by Stax. - Stax entered the arena to the song Suicide Blonde by INXS. - Haystacks never came out to any theme tune before, so I figured he’d chosen that song specifically for Regal, to rile him up. - There seemed to be some legitimate friction between the two. - They both seemed in a particularly foul mood.

    World Lightweight Champion Johnny Saint is from Blackpool. - And super heavyweight Rex Strong (RIP), he ran the former Hadleigh Hotel on the promenade. And there was a wrestling gym in the 70s/80s.

    ITV in the shape of Greg dyke killed British wrestling back in 1988. His short sighted decision based on short term business idols and a notion that not just wrestling but itv were perceived as “old fashioned” has been proven wrong countless times by the simple fact the WCW, WWE, TNA and AEW have all tapped into the British market over the years with mixed success. Had ITV invested and updated wrestling working alongside Brian Dixon at All Star, it’s arguable that British wrestling could have thrived in its own right and probably would have had a talent sharing agreement with a large American promotion going forward. The WWE’s motivation for NXT UK was as much about stopping a competitor from taking making share as it was about long term commitment. The WWE alongside Dyke have much to apologise for alongside WCW’s infamous tours around the millennium that frankly took Uk fans for granted.

    If anyone who doesn’t already know there is a short interview with Mr Kellett on UA-cam which was part of a nostalgic documentary on British wrestling on television and is worth a look if you are interested Apparently when he was an old man he would never go to any of reunions he was invited to, because he thought all the other wrestlers hated him because of the things he had done to them. I remember his brother who used to live in the Isle of Man and at one time use to work at the swimming pool.

    Les Kellet had the appearance of an old man who has just crawled out of bed after 2 hours sleep from a night of boozing, wearing a pair of Y-front underpants. He could command the audience like no other by being an absolute master of his craft of comedy wrestling. The fact that even Fit Finley wouldn’t mess with the guy speaks volumes

    • @Wainy_16
      @Wainy_16 День тому

      When I think think of the term "Shooter", I think of someone with a grappling/ amateur wrestling/ martial arts etc background. I may be wrong, but I don't think Les Kellet had any of these. He was just one twisted, vicious, nasty, soulless, fearless, farm-strong psycho, who was seemingly impervious to pain if the infected pig bite story is true... In other words, one hard bastard!

    • @Paulthompson9942
      @Paulthompson9942 День тому

      @@Wainy_16he was a well trained wrestler who could stretch anybody

    • @pavlovsdogman
      @pavlovsdogman День тому

      @Wainy_16 he was trained in submission or catch wrestling so he definitely was a trained grappler. His favourite thing to do was put people in submissions and make them scream for real because he knew it looked real for the crowd! Most British wrestlers from that era had catch wrestling backgrounds to protect the business from challengers. Catch wrestling is basically amateur wrestling with submissions and the matches are determined by who taps first rather than pins and points. Les was only 5' 8" and 175lbs plus he looked old so he wasn't a strong, athletic looking guy like most trained grapplers but he was definitely trained and he was a sicko who liked hearing people beg for mercy in submissions kinda like Brett Harts dad? 😆

    • @Wainy_16
      @Wainy_16 День тому

      @Paulthompson9942 Yeah, when I think of any wrestler training, my mind automatically assumes it's the modern "American style". I forget that Kellet's generation trained in the old British catch style, which made the likes of Billy Robinson one of the hardest men of his generation...
