FYI, this exact engine can be found in Volvo V70 estate cars from 2002-2005. It's called "D5" in those cars, so if you want a better look at the front end, search for a guy called "SiRobb" on youtube who does a lot of jobs on this engine, albeit in the car, not the boat.
I would say stuck wastegate (VNT) on turbocharger is more common fault and should be checked first, but good information.
