    Nice box, not good enough. As a Welder, you should know that the ground can carry current. You are on grass. WRONG.... I am a military trained electrician, (21 years, retired), and spent 30 years in factories, as a electrical maintenance manager and an industrial engineer. I got into this hobby about five years ago, and had a similar setup, save I elevated my platform off the bench with two glued on 2X4's. After time, you get a bit lazy...then maybe cut a few corners. We all say we won't, BUT WE ALL DO. I recently got into fractal burning guitars, and one late afternoon, a bit tired, didn't realize it was still on and touched one probe. The other one literally jumped into my other hand, as the hand was touching the edge of the guitar body. I "Rode the Lightning" for about two seconds until I fell on my right side, heavily bruising my shoulder and hitting my head on the floor. When I hit, I woke up, got up and went into the house and had my wife call 911. Heartrate was 160, and I ended up in a burn center for three days as they monitored my heart, and treated the burns on my hands, which were not that bad. Huge hematoma on my forehead, and a scalp cut on my head where I scraped on a bench nearby. NOT FUN, NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCES.... Changes I will make: 1. Add two momentary on switches to the incoming 120VAC in a plastic housing. Both have to be pressed to engage the unit. No 120VAC, no burn. Two switches, two hands. 2. My potentiometer, which I use to adjust the voltage, will be next, in a straight line away from me. Adjust before I can press both buttons, which are UL approved to be Open when released. 3. The actual unit on its platform, further away down the line. 4. The probes, with 10K insulated wire, extending to a separate wooden table. 5. Finally, 12K gloves, 1.8MM thick, in case the switches, and the potentiometer all fail and it stays lit. 6. I am standing on 3/4" insulated rubber flooring, the final table will not be on the same rubber. Sound like a lot? 6000VAC is a lot! I am lucky to be writing this, but this is what I should have done in the first place. Lichtenberg is like nothing else in beauty, and it is highly, highly dangerous. I see people using regular wire, no gloves, machine very near to the work, and I think, there is number 34, waiting to die.... Stay safe.

    You did a good job on the video, I bought the bucket, followed your steps and now have a good smaller trenching bucket that fits the HF backhoe just fine. BTW, as of the date of this post, I think they sold out of them. The also sold out of the ripper, but they still have a few of the larger bucket. You can still get a good ripper for Norther Tool, Nortrac Item# 107679, for about $230.00 USD, but both mounts must be extensively modified or replaced. Same for the Nortrac buckets. The best choice I have found is to purchase Kubota Quick Connect, modify it to fit the HF Backhoe, then simply use the Kubota accessories. No more modifications necessary, everything fits and connects in a few seconds.

    Thanks for the advice James I got my DR 9" bucket flange cut but, had to go out and buy the DeWalt cutting blades for my HF sawzall and they worked like a charm. I let my son in law weld it for me since he has a wire feed welder and told me it has much better penetration. This thing turned out great. Fits snug and works just as if it was designed for this unit. I appreciate your video and your feed back. The information you provided helped me get the job done properly.

  • @f1948s
    @f1948s 3 роки тому

    Do you think it would have been easier to cut the flange off with a die grinder instead of a sawzall? I am having a difficult time trying that. Maybe my blades should have more teeth. I am using blades for metal but all they have are 14tpi. I wonder if I should look for some with 32tpi. What blade did you use in your sawzall? Thanks for any advice.

    • @jamesmfishing
      @jamesmfishing 3 роки тому

      I don't know if a die grinder will work or not but you want to remove as little of the metal as possible so it will be easier to line back up. I normally use 32tpi but i have both blades. i started removing the flange with a angle grinder to get as much of the weld off as possible both inside and out and that did help out and then used the sawzall but it did take no lass then 20 or 30 minutes to cut it off with the saw. here is a link to the video i got the idea from ua-cam.com/video/KuKMSIT-obo/v-deo.html he has not uploaded any videos in a few years but he has done more to his digger then i have. I hope this helps you out.

    It looked like a pretty good box this month. How big are the fish at the end? Do you keep them as pets? Happy Holidays.

    • @jamesmfishing
      @jamesmfishing 3 роки тому

      The fish are between 8 to 16 in in size i have to use a normal fish net to move them when i need to. the fish are more livestock then pets due to them being tilapia and they are highly regulated by fish & game because they are vary invasive so i have to be careful what i do with them. The tank they are in is normally hooked up to a grow bed for vegetables but i took it off so i can move the tank around because i am planing to build a bigger greenhouse at some point. I am planing on getting some bluegill later but they can not go in the tank with these guys because that will not end well. If you want to learn more about growing vegetables with fish like this check out Rob Bob's Aquaponics & backyard farm channel. And Happy Holidays.

    Why no teflon tape or pipe dope on the threads ?

    • @jamesmfishing
      @jamesmfishing 3 роки тому

      No need for Teflon tape here because this pipe is not pressurized as it is only a siphon and most of it can be seen by the camera. But all other pipes do get Teflon tape when i use threaded fittings. I can not use pipe dope at all on this due to it being a fish tank and pipe dope is not safe for the fish. This tank is no longer in use and as been removed from the greenhouse due the tank it self leaking and the fish tearing up the liner all the time .

    Did those big bolts come from the Harbor Freight bucket that your are using on the retro fitted DR bucket?

    • @jamesmfishing
      @jamesmfishing 4 роки тому

      Yes the bolts came from the Harbor Freight bucket. I don't remember if i talked about this or not but when i ordered the DR bucket they put a hold on the order and costumer service sent me a email about them not having any info on a backhoe i ordered from them and they wanted the to know the serial number and the name of the previous owner so they can transfer the warranty over to me. The bottom line is they did not want to sell me a bucket that may not fit my backhoe. I emailed them back and just tolled them to go ahead with the order and that this was for a different backhoe i don't know if they are still doing this but just be prepared for a email from them. When you think about it they are just trying keep the headaches to a minimum because they had in the email if it did not fit and i returned it i will have to pay for the shipping back to them. I already knew it was not going to fit because i am not the first one to do this. so if you have a grinder and a welder have some fun with it.

    • @f1948s
      @f1948s 4 роки тому

      @@jamesmfishing Thanks for the info James. You did a great job on the video. I am highly considering buying one of these backhoes. I figure it should be just about as good as the DR and so much cheaper. Is yours holding up nicely? How would you score it from 1 to 10?

    • @jamesmfishing
      @jamesmfishing 4 роки тому

      ( This is going to be a vary long reply) my backhoe is holding up pretty good but we don't use it all the time but when we do it is normally a all day thing and i run it out of gas before storing it for any amount of time. The engine will normally start on the first or second pull and i don't use it at full throttle unless i need to but it is not vary fast compared to a mini excavator but it does get the job done. If you want it to go faster you will have to change the pump, motor and a few hoses out with bigger ones the control body is good for up to 10 GPM the pump puts out around 3.5 GPM give or take. The motor can't handle a a bigger pump and that is why it will need to be changed and HF has some bigger ones to pick from. The hoses going to the controls will need to be bigger because it can be a bottleneck for the oil. I know i just told you the down side of the backhoe but it dose have a good side and that is it puts out some pretty good power like a few months a go we moved some granite boulders with it that weighed between 150 to about 500 pounds and there was 10 of them. and last month i used it to pick up one side of a 35 ton log splinter to fix a flat tire and that was with the same pump and motor it came with. I will have to give it two scores one for power and one for speed and i will give it a 10 for power but i will have to give it a 7 for speed and that depends on how much throttle you give it. Just so you know i do landscaping and using equipment like this is just part of the job and i have about 1000 hrs. on man-lifts, bobcats, and other equipment including this backhoe. I am not bragging or anything i am just saying that i known how something like this should operate and i can tell you that it took some getting use to. i suggest finding a hydraulic shop that can make hoses because the backhoe i got has two going to the bucket that are a little to short. A equipment rental place or a O'Reillys auto parts may be a good place to go if you have any around you that offer that service. I say buy one have some fun with it and yes you will have problems with it but take it from some one that ether owns or take care of over 30 different pieces of equipment you will have problems from any brand name or other wise. I am telling you all this so you know what you are getting in to and if you are ordering it online try and have a forklift ready to unload it and to put it together you can assemble it with out a forklift. And mine was in the truck long whys because the crate was to long and it took some work to get under it to get it out. I hope this helps i don't know anything about the backhoe DR sells just it cost a lot more then this one so i say buy it and have a steak dinner with the money you saved and you just may make a little money to. Also before you use it for the first time go around it and tighten every bolt and screw on it i did not and in the middle of a job it gave off a loud bang and the boom fall down into the hole it ended up being the love joy coupling (and yes that what it is called and i do know why) between the engine and the pump backing off one side its a two part coupling that is vary common on this type of set up but some times they come in three parts. and the pins that hold the boom together and the ones for the bucket all need a needle/pin grease attachment for a grease gun and ether a air or battery powered one will be easier to use for this and on that note the grease fittings inside the pivot point at the base of the boom for the side to side movement are junk they are located on the back side of it just look in the two holes and you will want to replace them before you put the boom on you will thank me later and i wise i knew that before i put my together. Sorry for the long reply but it is better to have to much info then not enough on these things. Like i said earlier buy it and have fun and the DR may have the same problems as this one dose.

  • @f1948s

      Thanks. I don't remember why I made it that wide to begin with. Maybe something to do with the fact that I had to make it longer to make everything fit I think. As for the batteries I wanted the weight near the motors to help with the traction as the wheels are smooth. The wheels and motors came from a wheel chair that was give to me so they was not my first pick as I was wanting right-angled motors but they was free so what can I say. And on the front I put I homemade tow hitch because I am planning on building a trailer for it because I can and why not. When I have it out again I will do a new video of it.

    Hello; Having not seen the add on wheels you added "in action", I wanted to ask you how you use them. I think what you do is leave the factory wheels on at the rear all the time, and when you need to move the digger around, you take off the part of the front outrigger that digs into the ground off and then flip the smaller outrigger part with your added wheels on it over (upside down from normal) , which then gives you 4 wheels touching the ground so you can roll the unit around without the hassle of taking the factory wheels off the back and moving them to the front. Is this correct ? Thanks.

    • @jamesmfishing
      @jamesmfishing 5 років тому

      Yes that is correct but I just use the bucket to move it around most of the time anyways with the outriggers on but that is can be slow. But the add on wheels are good for going from one side of the yard to the other quickly and also they can make loading it on a trailer for long distant travel easier as long as you have a winch on the trailer.

    Hello; Thanks for doing the video. I just today got around to putting some hose wrap on, and had several questions for you. I assume you ran the hose wrap from before the round loop they go thru to where the hoses go around (and rub against) the "frame" of the machine. Did you wrap all the hoses (there are a bunch) or just the ones towards the outside that seem more exposed to rubbing? So far I have wrapped two of the hoses, and I noticed that because it increases the diameter of the hoses (obviously), it makes the hose bundle even more "snug" where they go through that round chrome loop. I have a concern that if I wrap all of them they will be binding together where they go thru the round chrome loop. Let me know how you did this and if you had any issues. Thanks again !

      Hi. I just did three of them and put a small piece on the bottom of the loop and have not had any problems. And truly the hoses need to be longer so rubbing or being pulled out of the crimps won't happen. And at some point I will have longer hoses made up for it and put a different hose protector on them maybe something like a sleeve one I hope this helps.

    I'm thinking about getting one myself to work under a Dremel Workstation. I have a Dremel 3000. The Dremel uses a collet so there's no problem with tools falling out, but has only a 1/8" collet. There aren't many router bits or end mills available with 1/8" shank. Just for that reason I'll have to re-think the whole approach - could be the Dremel won't be that useful after all. But back to this indexing table, was it accurate enough for you? What about clamping work?

    • @jamesmfishing
      @jamesmfishing 5 років тому

      I have a Dremel Workstation and the vice to go with it that was gave to me a year ago as well. So I know how big it is and I don't know if the table will fit it because the table is about 4 in. thick. It may be ok for small items that are under 1 in. thick or so. As for it being accurate enough it gets the job done but it dose have some play on the slides so I will not trust it much. And for clamping work it dose a good job but you will need to play with it a bit to get the clamps in a good spot for small objects and for the big ones it will do fine. I have used the table to make G scale clamp rail joiners out of 3/4 in. by 1/8 in. aluminum flat bar with a 1/8 in. slot in them with no problems and I got my end mills off of EBay and I hope this helps.

      @@jamesmfishing Yeah, your info helps a lot, thanks. It's really good to talk to someone who has the hardware. And there's other ways of going. We can always just build our own tools and jigs, and speaking of which there's a book that might interest you called Making and Modifying Machines, by the editors of Fine Woodworking Magazine. Packed with good stuff. I like all the miniature equipment, for modelmaking. I once had the Sherline combination mill and lathe, a really expensive setup, which was overall good but it flexed. So that's something else to look out for; generally speaking, if there's a lot of plastic used in a machine tool, it's going to give you problems, like flexing and drifting out of spec. So it looks like I either spend the rent money or build my own equipment.

    • @jamesmfishing
      @jamesmfishing 5 років тому

      Yes we can always build or buy our tools and jigs and I have done both over the years. I just look at the cheapest way of doing it like I got A HF backhoe after buying plans to build one because it was about the same price for me. And like the Rail joiners I made I can make a lot more for the price they sell them and still save money. And if you do make you own indexing table I will like to suggest for you to use lead screws like the ones used on 3D printers they are vary accurate and you can get them in any size you need and at a good price to if you shop around. If I get another table I will make it and I am glad you found my info helpful.

      @@jamesmfishing I bought a cheap one off Amazon just to check it out. The thing arrived in ridiculously bad condition. It looks used, all marred and scratched up. It doesn't work, and was not fully assembled. I think they just gave up and shipped it. If I try to move the top table it goes a little ways and jams up, like it's going to break the plastic end caps. It came with no instructions. That exploded drawing you got sure would be nice to have. But I think there's hope if I can figure the way it's supposed go together. I wonder if you have taken yours apart yet? Mine looks to be the same as yours.

    • @jamesmfishing
      @jamesmfishing 5 років тому

      I hate to hear that and I did take the one I have apart to try and clean it up a bit and to put some grease on it to make it move a little better. The one I have has Allen set screws on the sides where the moving parts meet each other and there should be a flat piece of metal or a shim between the moving parts to help guide it you may have to play with the screws and put some grease every thing that moves to have any hope at all. And It sounds like you got a return that someone broken and sent back and amazon gave it to you. And if I can I will try and do a video of it in use.

    Hello: I have modified the DR 9 inch bucket this way for my 62365 HF backhoe, and when I went to put it on it looks like it is very close to the end of the "beam" at the end that holds the bucket and may scrape it when the bucket is curled? I was wondering if you have installed and used this bucket and have had any clearance issues ? Do you have a video of the 9 inch bucket in use. Thanks.

    • @jamesmfishing
      @jamesmfishing 5 років тому

      Hello I have used the bucket a few times now but have not got the chance to do a video of it in use yet but I have been wanting to do a another one about the HF backhoe in use and I will try to do one here soon. and as for the bucket clearance issues yes it will hit and take the paint off but for my backhoe that is all it did but it may be different for yours. I will do a short video tomorrow morning of the bucket so you can see what it looks like after a few Hr. of use and I will send you a link here in the comments for it ok. And Thank you for watching.

      Helllo , thanks for doing the video. I see where the 9 inch bucket scrapes the end of the beam and I will probably just grind a bit of the metal off the end of the beam to make it clear. I will check back on your channel regularly to see if you post a video of the 9 inch bucket in action digging.
