The Editing Of Whiplash | Deep Analysis
This is a deep analysis of the editing of the movie whiplash and some it's techniques. I do shot by shot analysis of some of the edits discussing things like the pace, timing, and creative intentions and then I compare some of the different scenes and how they are edited differently to add to the storytelling.
Whiplash is currently on Netflix, I encourage to go watch the film in it's entirety and look for the techniques I discussed in this video:www.netflix.com/title/70299275
This video is for filmmakers and people interested in learning more about the craft of filmmaking. I am a filmmaker and I do a lot of educational content on my various social accounts.

He targeted the youngest daughter from the beginning knowing she has not learned to control or hide her emotions. Notice how she angrily stares down Hans and looking down where the Jews are hiding. Hans even compliments her, but she just stares at him with hatred instead of saying thank you or smiling and he watches her reaction. The youngest sibling is a key role in this scene, it’s like when they snitch on the older siblings for doing something wrong.

Landa asking for milk could also be a reference to the (probably) most well-known dog whistle there is: milk representing white supremacy. At least that was my initial thought when watching this scene, as the n4zis used to spread propaganda saying that Jews and other groups that they considered inferior weren't able to digest milk (mainly because milk is commonly known for representing innocence and purity, as said in the video), therefore only the “master race” would be able to biologically drink milk, a token of their superiority. Idk, that was my interpretation of it the moment I first saw it, could be wrong tho

Yes, yes I agree. Inglorious Basterds, although not a "serious" film, such as Godfather or Valkyrie, it's a very artistic and epic movie. Tarantino is very talented if not genius. And I'm sure anybody would notice the background music. Fur Elise, from Beethoven (a German music?) but it is presented as somewhat Latin. French, which is where La Padite comes from.

Right at the end of part one Landa puts his hand on LaPadite’s arm and walks him into his own home. It establishes his power in the scene and confirms the idea that his “invitation” into LaPadite’s home is merely a formality.

I think another reason Hans chooses milk over the wine is because as dairy farmers that milk is their “bread and butter” so to speak and Hans is demonstrating subtlety his control over the family. That milk would have been more valuable to the LaPaditte’s than the wine because they would have sold that but instead had to use the source of their income to serve their guest. Hans knows this and the way he downs the glass in one gulp was further disrespect towards them.

I can't quit put my finger on it, but it feels like Landas hat/cap has something to do with different shots, and how the intensity seems to ramp up a little more each time it's forces into frame. But, I'm no movie director nor do I know anything about framing. Just saying how it makes me feel personally.

Asking for milk is also a power move as he's turning down a drink that his host is offering him and telling them what he wants to drink. Every move Landa makes is to assert his control over the situation no matter how small it is

Another thing about the milk vs wine: later on in the movie, we see Nazis getting absolutely shitfaced. Him not wanting to drink on duty could signify how he views himself as being leagues above the other Nazis.

A moment not mentioned that I find particularly interesting is La Padite asking his daughter to close the window at 6:00. I can’t pinpoint the significance, but it feels like it may be another barrier between La Padite’s interaction with Landa and the domestic life outside.

Well, you will be glad to know rhere are more in the works. The next one is half way finished and the one after that is maybe 40-60% done. And there is a list of ones that are planned. Its just hard between my actual filmmaking and writing and work and other social content to find time to work on these. And also these are not easy to do. They take time. So the better my channel does hopefully the more time i will have to dedicate to finishing more of them. But im glad you are getting something out of them enough to wait for them!

Something I noticed on your window detail when Landa enters the house, is that one of the soldiers also enters into the frame of the window almost at the exact same time. Kind of helps make a reminder of the backup Landa has and how they're a unit

Glad to be helpful. I originally made this because there are books on cinema language that are like 600pages long but if you google it, there was nothing except that interview quote with Scorcese. and I thought it was sort of this mystifying difficult thing to explain. and I kept having to have that conversation to discuss films or work with DP's because cinema language and film grammar is a normal part of my way of thinking. I thought it would make it easier if I summarized it concisely and put it out there to hopefully bring it forward as a normal part of the lexicon of discussing films.

Those final shots were incredible. You have Shoshana making her escape into the light, and from the dark Landa steps out. Most of the frame is black, save for the silhouette of the door. Further emphasising she's just escaped from Hell. Landa then draws his pistol and the framing implies he could make the shot, but by this point we know enough about him and instead he shouts 'au revoir Shoshana' with a menacing smirk. For him it's not just about following his orders and Hitler's mandate, it's good sport. He lets her go so he's got another web to untangle later on. Another game to play. The overall theme of this film leaves the audience wondering just how much does Landa know in any given situation. Unlike one dimension villains who gobble it up in one scoop, he likes to play with his food. The scene with the 'Italians' is especially hilarious for this reason.
