Everyday Carceral Culture: A Conversation with Dr. Jasmine Syedullah

Terms and slogans abound in contemporary thinking about the prison system. It has become commonplace to hear about mass incarceration, the carceral state, defunding the police, prison reform, and prison abolition. Yet even while the prison system impacts the lives of many Americans, many others view it from a distance, imagining incarceration as something that happens to other people. In a wide...

Climate Change vs Both Sides of Journalism - Adam Rome

Adam Rome, Professor of History, University at Buffalo discusses how the media has focused on the wrong debate. Doubt, while fundamental to the scientific method, has played an out-sized role in the public debate on climate change. Why do so many Americans distrust science in this specific context? Listen to our panelists discuss the history of environmentalism, the politicization of science, a...

This description of a Haudenosaunee traditional concept of justice, and its contrast with the colonizers’ sense of justice is validating to that child part of me, the greatx5 granddaughter of French, German etc colonizers, who saw the insanity of my family/culture’s sense of justice and intuitively, as a child, craved actual repair. Now I’m a decolonizing, relational psychotherapist and I facilitate actual repair in romantic relationships following ruptures, and building this skill into our individual and collective lives I know is transformative. Thank you for sharing about this!

This man is so overtly racist, he’ll go to any length necessary to blame white people for every problem that black Americans face. It’s sad that messages of hope and growth aren’t discussed/promoted by black leaders as much as their orations on victimhood, hatred and divisiveness. What’s their goal? What’s the end game? Those narratives set back and hobble younger generations of blacks and instills a lack of personal accountability.

I fear that the nineteenth amendment would not stand a snowball's chance in hell with today's political climate. The Grand Old Nazis would kill it before it even got to the states where it would be unable to get the required three-quarters for ratification anyway. The U.S. is a nation moving in reverse in spite of the majority of its population prefering to go forward. This will never change. It will never be allowed to.

Truth can be violated. Lies can lead others to sympathize with evil. A scenario I always to tell people whom are just so confused and caught up by what they see online or television, who do ZERO research on their own for truth, and just submit to whatever they now sympathize…. Follows.. As a young child. Your home is burglarized and your father is murdered by the intruder. The burglar/murderer is caught and convicted. A few years later your sister is raped and cut. The rapist is caught and convicted. Driving home from work, a person pulls you out of your vehicle, takes your belongings, and even after you submitted, stabs you and leaves you scarred and crippled. A few years later, you are now a parent. One day, your child is kidnapped, sodomized, and murdered. The person responsible is caught and convicted. One day, these people who did horrible things to you, to your family, are now collectively demanding things they want. Are you sympathetic and supportive to them and support them in their actions? Every story has at least TWO SIDES. The Attica stories recounted are always from one side. I want to hear all sides. That brings the REAL TRUTH. Research, ask questions, find the truth on your own… not by a clip or video or documentary.

When consensus becomes fact, and when fact-checkers are looking for facts, not the truth, it becomes selective to the point where journalism has become an echo chamber for people who look for affirmation rather than truth. Not to mention that mainstream news has become entertainment and is reduced to blockbuster headlines, clickbait, and trolling. Journalists care very little about anything more important than rigged politics and staged events. Debunking "fake news" by fact-checking is like the internal affairs departments of police departments looking for corrupt cops... not very impartial... not there to find the truth, but rather they are there to gate-keep the truth. Another example would be the Vatican "trying" to protect children... It will never happen because the truth is not the consensus, and the truth is not acknowledged. You know your job is just a job and not a mission. Keeping your job and telling the truth are in conflict with one another. Mainstream "journalists" are the scum of the earth, right behind priests, politicians, and police. Hypocrites and liars.

Or are you speaking of only the wealthiest for they can afford to be free as of one William Cosby. Thus he has money and thus he was able to hire counsel to prove or if you will define a technicality of the prosecution. So what do you mean by exclusive freedom in the sense? Humm, must ponder this more I shell. I'm yes..

Yeah, a good counter narrative would be to encourage less whining and working harder instead of endlessly whining about race. She is right about one thing. Her example of Libs exaggerating O.J. Simpsons color is just more proof that Leftists and Libs are the real racists. This is true now and historically. She is 100% right on that point.

wow! Susan B. Anthony's views on the 14th and 15th amendment benefiting African Americans and how she didn't support that is truly just sad. The countless people in American history that vouch for rights and liberty only when it benefits them and never when it benefits others, this hypocritical view is truly very American. Ex. The founding fathers singing their hypocritical tune of "we the people" and the bill of rights extending to "all" Americans (unless you are black, a woman, etc), and then here, white women singing the same tune but not singing the same tune when it comes to others' rights... it's just so sad. It's hard to take anyone seriously when their selfish hypocrisy is that strong.
