Troubleshooting a Roland JX-3P with bad rumbly sound

This JX-3P came to me unplayable but is getting much better under my loving care and expert repairs (or hacks, depending on your point of view). In any case, it has a bad noise that shows up in patches using DCO 1. Using both thickens a sound, so it is nice to have both working. This video discusses test mode, making patches to test for certain problems, and using an oscilloscope to view the CV...

I also cleaned and lubricated the other sliders with fader grease and glued the internal brace for the music stand back in place. Last bit was to replace a 50k trimmer with a newer one.

STRANGE is my new VC rack module.This uses advanced math to generate non-repeating chaotic patterns. Great for a different sounding sample and hold but can also modulate parameters at audio rates. It is still under development but getting close. Look for my modules under the WavsynModular brand in the vcv library.

In this video I describe how I built a Kraftwerk style analog drum machine controller. Then I explain how I made further changes to allow playing it with my hands with electrodes attached to them. The recording hiss is actually the noise circuit on the drum machine.

If you have the NTKDaemon running stop it and reinstall if upgrading. The installer does not appear to handle this properly which is why so many people have trouble installing native access.

    I have installed it on o e of those Intel Atom 8330 pc sticks with 2 gb of ram. I will say the performance is better with a screen resolution of 1280x720, but it plays streaming media nicely for such a low-spec machine, and even youtube acceptably. I do notice the difference vis-a-vis my 12th gen i3, but only in terms of load time, etc. It is a perfectly acceptable streamer, that old pos device. This is a great os!

    Prob has nothing to do with the noise issue, but I’d recommend replacing the battery while you’ve got it disassembled. I got mine from Syntaur and it was a breeze to install , but Analog Classics sells a battery cell holder that looks more convenient. Love to hear an update on the repair. The folks on the Syntaur forums are pretty knowledgeable about this kind of thing if you haven’t fixed it already.

    Made by Suzuki Corp. midi guitar controller, 1987/88. retailed for $299 at that time. Craig Anderton gave it a 8/10 in Electronic Musician Jan. 1988.

    Always good idea to change out the battery. First thing to do is always to clean everything inside. Do that first. Clean pots and all contact for the keys.

    Brilliant mod! I have a seeburg gulbransen select a rhythm that I plan to mod, taking inspiration from your work... Once I fix the bad resonance peak/high gain on the clave. Watching tour video gave me the clue that the culprit could be a gain resistor on theis clave circuit whose value has decayed over time... Cheers

    Did a CZ101, Just installed this board, identical part number, double triple checked my wiring, i know my soldering is good, i'm very experienced at soldering, The screen image is not centered, its kind of too far to the left, and there is empty space on the right of the OLED, any idea why this would happen? I ordered 3 other screens because i wanted spares and I have a CZ1000 that i'm doing next.

    I love the pure analog transistor + inductors (chokes) rhythm units rule! They actually sound like real drums more than sampled drums in the context of music if you use a good reverb and a noise gate. Tip on noise gates, go to a Music Go Round and look for a Furman QN-44 four channel noise gate. If they hook it up chances are they'll hook it up wrong and you can talk them down for $45 to $25. Regardless, Noise Gates, 30 band EQ's, and even rack reverbs are dirt cheap these days. My favorite drum rhythm unit is the great Thomas Band Box. It's actually manually played or triggered by whenever you play the organs bass pedals or the Lower keyboard manual. You select which triggers which individual sounds because each sound has it's own three way toggle switch ( rocker tab, easy to change on the fly, in the center the sound is triggered by both keyboard _and_ pedals. The Thomas Playmate is the "sequencer" a.k.a. the actual rhythm patterns and is the typical row of buttons with Cha Cha, Foxtrot etc. Now what set the Bandbox + Playmate combo apart from units on other manufacturers organs was that with the BB+PM it is dynamic! The number of keys played or held gives a different amplitude, and so with the Playmate getting these changes in amplitude and duration from the upper and lower keyboards and pedals, it can change the randomly change up the dynamics of the rhythm. It takes on the sound of a real drummer big time! I don't even need to hit the 'fill' button.

    Just curious, why do use a switch to connect other devices "hard wired" instead of directly connected to the ports on the router? I'm guessing it's to save cable runs, but it would be cool if you confirmed. Really enjoying this video.

    • @ErichIzdepski
      @ErichIzdepski 2 місяці тому

      Thanks. Yes, saving cable is one reason. Verizon router also wouldn't have enough ports for my gear. Other is the router is in a closet and I only want single cable sized holes through the walls to the other rooms. I have two switches to provide extra hard wired connections. I have vintage computers that don't have wireless capabilities so a switch is a must.
