Thymos and the 21st Century | Can We Escape Identity Politics? | Dignity without Universalism
An introduction to the ancient Greek concept of THYMOS (Thumos), the spirited part of the soul as well as Fukuyama's interpretation of the thymotic in our current world.
It appears inevitable that some type of identity advocacy will always exist. The challenge lies in directing this thymotic impulse towards constructive expressions that do not infringe upon the dignity of others.

Good video. Thank you for mentioning you're not a political expert. I was like "anarchy doesn't mean no government" lol It's anti hierarchy, which the Arch Heathens definitely had. The caste system is hierarchical, just way less than modern Euro-Western societies

Tidewater Norman "high born" identity was the basis for the propaganda for the South in the Civil War. Many of the actual fighters, those without a horse, descended from peasant farmers in Northern England and Southern Scotland

Interesting comment.. Lived in Aristocratic Tidewater most of life. So I guess I like it. However in my neighborhood and at work, the people are as likely to come from Northeast or Greater Appalachian Mtns. I grew up hearing the old Virginia accent. Adding r’s and people still fighting Civil War. However not anymore..

Woodard's American Nations book is a decent intro to this topic. Fischer's Albion's Seed is long, but especially a good analysis into the differences between these sub-cultures and the imprint they had on the land they settled. Another good book that touches a bit on the socio-political influence of these sub-cultures is Kevin Philips' The Emerging Republican Majority.

Forget about this particular show, but we Swedes should start requesting royalty by these corporate artist always and still portraying all their most successful anime as mangas as an obvious hint of Swedish appearance. Forget about my people’s small noses and blonde hair and the rest of an anime characters normal typical traits. Have a look at the trailer for the documentary bringing this case up and its name of its title is: The most beatiful boy. Japan based all their art on this poor child and they still have a fascination and overly obvious obsession of not having either their own traits and looks in their fantastic art projects and believe all people is having our looks as a given, fact based choice of appearance of what a leading whatever is representing its tale. Shit is getting creepy to say the least.

That author is really strange. As far as I know, eastern germany isnt as western as germany west of the elbe, but that was essentially because east of the elbe was where german merchants and religious men colonized the east. Theyre not a core land of The West, but theyre very deeply connected to it and born from it.

Genuinely inspired video and one that speaks to the challenges of our current age, and feelings I can relate to on a personal level. So many great linguistic concepts we can learn from in Greek. There is a strong tendency as well to fully reject liberalism and the enlightenment in a reactionary stance, or to embrace it as a sign of allegiance to espoused establishment values,. Instead you have done a great job here of examining the subject in a much more nuanced and useful way. Much of this confusion is also a consequence of the United States long-lasting existence as an empire, rather than as a proper nation-state and the subsequent projection of American ethnic confusion and strife onto the broader western world. I strongly support your statement that "we must approach these issues strategically, with warmth and thoughtfulness, rather than impulsiveness and hostility". This is the wise and healthy path to redirect the discourse to, rather than its current hostile and impulsive condition.

I love Fisher's book, but it concentrates too exclusively on the British. Two other MAJOR early influences were the Dutch, whose religiously-tolerant mercantilism in New Amsterdam is seen by some (the book Island at the Center of the World) as a more original source of secular capitalism, and an enormous German Protestant population, especially in Pennsylvania and up the Hudson-Mohawk valleys. In terms of political precedence, population numbers, and sophisticated culture, these settlers constitute significant fifth and sixth pre-Revolutionary influences. If you were raised in these areas you know how powerfully these cultures still influence American values.

He`s name was Svend, (btw the same as my father) - not Sweyn, and the lastname was TVESKÆG (meaning =he had 2 beards)that shouls/could be english translatet to : TWOBEARDS. Normally for that time period, he would have had hes fathers name added with a "son" to indicate to others of which dynasty he was from, and of which legitimate birth he was of, but I haven seen any notice refering any other lastname to Svend as the 1 mentioned in this video, thats why he is "assumed" to be "a royal Bastard". Great video & Thanks

Chales made a lot of mistakes but I think looking at everything you can see sorta see where he was coming from. A lot of history of the civil war is sorta told from Parliaments point of view. 1. Yes his personal rule is sorts tyrannical however his fathee also reigned for 7 years without parliment. He also did eventually call a Parliment. 2. If you look at the demands parliment was asking in the early 1640s its undeniable they WERE tryinf to take awat power from Charles. I don't think any king in the 1640s would be fine with thrir demands 3. We hear a lot of the puritans being mad at charles for adding more ceremonal elements to his church but again, im sure a lot of people who werent puritan liked the old ceremonies in church.
