Testing Valve Facing Materials for Primary Poppet-type valves by John A Tuttle from Player-Care.com
Переглядів 3332 роки тому
A bubble-jar tester was used to test ten different valve facing materials to see how they compare to each other in terms of their air-tightness. In my opinion, the 0.033" silicone sheet material performed the best.

Testing the air motor
Переглядів 1 тис.3 роки тому
This shows how to tell if the air motor is going to run smoothly. The problem is what I refer to as 'fly-back'. It's a common problem when an air motor has sat in the same position for many years.
Visually detecting air motor valve leakage

This video shows how easy it is to visually detect leakage of the sliding valves in an air motor.
Applying Plastic Glue
Переглядів 3113 роки тому
This is about how I apply plastic glue to the wood when making small bellows. I might add that in this case, I used a little more glue than normal so that it would be easy to see the 'squeeze' (glue that squeezes out when the wood and cloth are joined together). Removing the squeeze is optional, but I find that doing so makes trimming off the excess cloth much easier.
Kimball E/F Brass Gear noise by John A Tuttle from Player-Care.com
Переглядів 2633 роки тому
This is basically a reference video that shows how much noise the brass gear makes. The video was originally intended to show that the brass gear was finished and in stock at Player-Care. The brass gear was later replaced with a better and much quieter nylon/PLA gear.
(Part Three) Lock-and Cancel valve theory by John A Tuttle from Player-Care.com
Переглядів 2364 роки тому
This is the third and final video in my series about how and why lock-and-cancel valve function. Basically, it just shows a comparison between the diagram of the assembly and the actual assembly. This and more information about lock-and-cancel valves is found at: www.player-care.com/lock-and-cancel.html
(Part Two) Lock-and-Cancel valve theory by John A Tuttle from Player-Care.com
Переглядів 2954 роки тому
This is the second video in a three part series where I attempt to explain the theory of operation of a common lock-and-cancel valve assembly. Unfortunately, as I was just getting into showing how the diagram compares to the actual assembly, the battery in my video camera died. So, instead of this being a two part series, it will be a three part series. This information and more is contained in...
(Part One) 'Why the Play valve comes on first' by John Tuttle from Player-Care.com
Переглядів 2874 роки тому
This is part one of my effort to explain the theory of operation of a common lock-and-cancel valve assembly. In the video, I use the term 'more air' and 'less air' a few times. It is, however, more accurate to say a 'larger' or 'smaller' mass of moving air. Also, while I didn't notice it at first, at times 0:44 and 3:41 you can actually see the Rewind valve start to open. It is at that moment t...
Using Plastic Block Valves to make Lock-and-Cancel Valves by John A Tuttle from Player-Care.com
Переглядів 1994 роки тому
I decided to see if I could modify a couple of plastic Aeolian Block Valves to make a Lock-and-Cancel valve assembly. This video is now embedded in a web page that explains the basic theory of operation of a lock-and-cancel valve. See: www.player-care.com/lock-and-cancel.html
Current test on a Kimball E/F motor by John A Tuttle from Player-Care.com
Переглядів 524 роки тому
This video shows how much current is drawn by a Kimball E/F motor with no load and with an extreme load. The applied voltage is 12 VDC. The resistance of the motor at a dead stop reads 50 ohms. So, one might assume that the maximum current that can flow is 1/4 amp. As the video clearly shows, that's not actually the case. In essence, it demonstrates that if the motor is stopped, as would be the...
Current drawn by a Kimball E/F motor at full stop by John A Tuttle from Player-Care.com
Переглядів 264 роки тому
The second video shows the current being drawn by the Kimball E/F motor when it's stopped. The applied voltage is still 12 VDC. While I only stopped the motor for a few seconds, it was drawing about 650 ma. I also felt the motor after this short test, and it had already started getting warm. The point is, that even though the motor is protected by a one amp fuse, it will overheat if stopped. So...

❤ I still love this video!
Very good to know :) thank you for this
Glad to see you back at it. Your videos are always appreciated.
Nice! I have one that was rough. Bought another parts machine on Ebay, re-tubed, fixed "fan" hub that was cracked, works surprisingly well.
Hi, what is the unit of measurement?
Very helpful - beautifully explained and demonstrated, complete with lighting, clear video and audio. Bravo!
It's been 13 years, did you ever find out what the name of the woven string was?
John, I have Autopiano valves with the screw on outer valves. They were restored in the past and they only consist of the fibre disk, leather washer for threading on top and a leather facing glued to the bottom. The problem is they don'e wobble at all and I can't find any photos of the original valves. Any suggestions?
John, your work bench looks like mine. Stuff everywhere. Been like that all my life.
This is like a webcam at 1FPS...
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this basic tutorial. It's exactly what I needed to understand in order to fix my player piano. The play/rewind lever wasn't working and I scrolled the internet for about 3 hours looking for exactly this explanation (specifically 2:53- the armature). And I was able to fix it! I'm so pleased!! Thank you again.
I must have missed it, but what setting do you have the iron set to?
Who recorded this and how old is that video?
Thanks John!!
Thank you for the very helpful video.
Thanks, John. I haven’t worked on an Ampico in years, but those switches are SO IMPORTANT! Good looking manufacturing; it should give many years of service. Thank you for all you do to “ keeping the music rolling”!
Hello John … I’m having a problem with my simplex player piano that I was hoping you would know the answer to. Recently I redid the fabric on all the bellows and Cleaned up the interior. Now the piano plays fine BUT as soon as I pedal; 4 of the keys (first was only 2) go down and stay down during the entire roll. The odd thing is that since the repair (8 month ago) only 2 keys would stay down, a month after that, they would all work perfect and now after 8 month 4 keys stay down
The first thing I would try is tightening the screws that secure the blocks to the windchest. As the gaskets between the chest and the blocks compress, tiny leaks often develop, which will cause the notes to activate.
what is the tool called to adjust the spring. my restored upright, which i bought restored, the damper springs put too much tension and cause the keys to be very heavy.
Not sure if I can add a picture here, but Schaff sells a tool called the Spring Hook (item #91C) which is designed for adjusting the tension on repetition springs.
I have 3 ampico A model, 2 are 33K model numbers and 1 is a 14K. I also have a completely different version that has exposed bellows and the piano was one with an action like none I have ever seen, not unplayable but no piano player would ever be able to play it. I wounded if you had ever seen anything like it.
Bought a building and the owner said I get the player piano. Most would think great I got another 100 year old antique that needs work...well, I figured out the pump and hose in a millisecond. Then I couldnt figure out why the roll kept going backwards without sound and within seconds of this video you helped me locate the small wood cover for all the switches LMAO! Got rocking with When i'm 64. Hit the reverse at the end of the roll where the scales play wildly to alert you to stop or change rolls. Man. I'm loving life. Antique building with a working player paino - A Stark looks like it was made in 1903.
Thanks John, Working on Paul Freiling's Wood whistle Calliope, and this helps me with the striker key bellows reconstruction.
Thanks for video, reworking the striker bellows on dads calliope Paul Freilings Wood Whistle Calliope
Thanks much for this video. I am restoring my Wurlitzer Rj12 player action.
"Bellows" is proper for both the singular and plural form of the word. "Bellow" is a verb meaning to speak loudly.
But anyway, thanks for the video; it was still interesting. Now let's see you get a refrigeration installer vacuum pump (reciprocating or scroll type) and demonstrate for us why that might not work to run one of these pianos.
It doesn't have turbines; a turbine is a set of blades that are driven by the medium; not which drive the medium. The wheel inside that cannibalized vacuum cleaner is an impeller type of fan; not a turbine or set of them.
No matter what, still piece-of-crap noisier, including whinier, as a cannibalized vacuum cleaner, than just using a motorized version of the bellows that the pedals would run. Just stick that in there instead! Every time I want to hear one of these videos of an electric nickelodeon or standard electropneumatic player piano playing, but then I discover that it's being run by a vacuum cleaner instead of power bellows, I get sickened by it and turn it off!
WERE ANY ANIMALS ABUSED MAKING THIS VIDEO ???
John i think you have a lot more experience with electronics that you think and your years in navy electronics gave you a good foundation also thank you for serving. Funny thing i once bought a complete set of the navy electronics courses from an ex-navy person those red and green cover electronics manuals and I went through them one by one I don't remember how many but there where a lot of them and those and subscriptions to radio electronics gave me a good background.
Very interesting point, thanks for info John
This is excellent and clear! I was able to walk through this video while working on my tracker and had a functional tracker again afterwards. Thank you for sharing.
I'm amazed at how fast the actions are on the percussions, especially the bass drum!
Thanks you saved me and my mate a phone call. Legend! Edit: Never mind!
the professional nicholodian hack makers do just this actually
Interesting so stupidly simple the problem maybe tricky to find initially. I was intrigued by piezo used as a stack pressure monitor, and in same pneumatic player piano a fet H bridge design to drive roll motor , touch controls in spool box too , no schematic but obvious to anyone with basic electronics knowledge. Similar is a pneumatic lock and cancel valve which is virtually astable mode or flip flop memory in electronics.
Would you advise against using a heat gun?
It's always good to see a video from you John, keep going, you are one of the few resources we have left for this sort of stuff.
John, just great your examination of materials and sharing you knowledge.....thank you!!!
Good to see you back at it again. Your videos are always interesting.
John, i need to rebuild the vacuum pump on Universal piano Company, player piano model P2 serial number is 6100. Can you help me ? Please... We inherited piano from my father-in-law and it has set for 50 years and his house and my mother-in-law used to put a wheel through it once in awhile but then it stopped playing. My wife had it shipped from California to Missouri last month.
Simple ideas always the best thanks for that idea
I use these for connecting rods on Whirligigs
I just found a little lodeon piano and it works but doesn't play any music. I want to fix it any tips?
Great info. Thanks for proving that it works inline!
I have disconnected the pneumatics on the air motor and clamped them closed for a couple of days. It usually improoves the problem, but not always completely.
Hi John do you know how to fix keys playing when they are not supposed to
How did you get the rod for it
I bought a set of hammers from Ragland Piano. As luck would have it they screwed up and bored the hammers oversize by .018 inches. My hammer shanks are.216 the hammers are all .234. Do you now sell a set of adaptor sleeves so I can install these new hammers? I could have bought a previously owned set of hammers from E-bay for 1/10th the cost and they would have fit perfectly
Sorry Roger, I don't have any sort of an adapter that will work. BTW, the sleeve you'd need would have to have a wall thickness of only about 1/128" (0.008"). I can't think of anything that could be fashioned into a sleeve that's that thin. Also, if they bored the wrong size, why not return them?
That Honkytonk setup puts rivets in front of the hammers. I had that setup on my Aeolian Player. I never used it or liked it as it will destroy the hammers all for the sake of making the piano sound tinny and out of tune. But Aeolian manufacturers had the brains of putting a lever out of the way that didn't interfere with the kneeboard removal
Great video John. I frequently use my air compressor to blow off accumulation on my sand paper.
Thanks John, just getting started on this mechanism. Glad i watched your video before destroying these wood pieces. Interesting that you don't clean the residual wood but rather use it as a guide when installing the repaired bellows.
