Listen to this ok.... statistically, if you have British ancestors for the last 200 years, as in, they were all born here.... Then any person who lived in Britain in Roman times and who has living descendants here today.... that person will be your ancestor. So I'm Welsh, all my forebears until 1700 at least are all British. This means I'm descended from any Roman guy that settled here and whose descendants stayed here. And so is my mate down the road. Proper British people are all related for sure if you go back 2000 years.

I just need to add a few clarifications regarding the Anglo Saxon Chronicle. This was believed to have started during the reign of King Alfred of Wessex. The earlier annuals it contains run from Caesar's attempt at the conquest of Britain in 60BC, through to the coming of the Germanic tribes and eventually covers event in the the various English kingdoms into the latter part of the 8th century. This history was compiled from earlier sources, which included various foundation stories, myths and legends. The original was then copied and the copies distributed to a number of monasteries throughout England where they were individually maintained as contemporary records from the individual points of view of the people in those locations. Some of these actually continued to be maintained after the Norman Conquest (one as late as 1154).
