This is my home course, glad you enjoyed your round. Looks like you got it during the last decent spell of weather we've had.
aye ..no much sunshine in 2024!
Tell that to Rotherham!
Thank you for the mention. I'm miles behind. I would have gone last weekend, but the forecast looked bad. Hopefully, Saturday back up and once again use a train. This looks like a nice walk, especially the beach sections at the end and bridge across the river. Cracking video, always makes me want to get back up there. All the best, Webby 👍
cheers Webby ..I had to come back home the next morning with the snow forecast. Actually found from Llwyngwril to Tywyn quite disappointing .the previous bit from Barmouth to Llwyngwril far better. Gonna be at leaat couple of months before Im back I think .but you never know when the impulse hits.

Well done again John ....
@@trailsandalesfromwales3074 cheers Phil. Track didnt take me past the old go kart track on your vid. Wasnt keen on that stage but had a good night out in Machynlleth afterwards. The next stage from Aberdovey looks good in your vid.
Yes you climb up away from the coast with good views@@SmithyGolfandSmithyWalks
Glad you enjoyed the course bud. Some of our holes are truly great holes and can be put on any course and they would not be out of place with, of course, the obligatory breeze to make things interesting. 👍
@@dave6930 cheers Dave ..had a fantastic afternoon there .absolutely loved it.
Common denominator you fud
Cheers Smithy. How about a Xmas vijo of your top 10 in Scotland. Wish you a Merry Xmas.
@@gooddeedsbeatbad2625 thars an idea for consideration. Thanks .have a good xmas yourself.
The greens at Southwold have typically been excellent. Still the case?
Ive only played it once .course was in really good condition .cant remember how good the greens weee but Im assuming they were good otherwise Ud have mentioned in the vid. If Id had time I would have played round again.
I’m thinking of making a scotland golf trip next March, did they require you to play with mats? What about the other surrounding courses? Wasn’t sure if that was required. Thanks
@@BillyAyles-s6n Im sorry I cant remember. Might have been mats in March. Im a member at Tain and I dont think its mats. Golspie and Brora are also great courses. Id take a mat just incase. Ive always got mine in the car.
Played here shortly after it opened, was about 1994ish
I remember the land being really wet and not suitable for a course. Not my fav type of course anyway. Just re-editing all the vids I did when I started in 2021. Filmed in portrait mode and trying me best converting it to landscape.
I think it was built on an old spoil tip from mining works. Not ideal terrain for golf. I seem to remember that it wasn't as bad as all that though
Think it closed last year. David Dunk used to be the pro here many years ago, a really top guy, taken from us to soon
Im just re editing all videos from 2021 as I filmed them in portrait mode .converting to landscape.Sad to hear any course closing
@@SmithyGolfandSmithyWalks I think it suffered badly from flooding. Such a shame as it looks a great course.
@@andybt3989 I liked the front 9 but the back 9 for me was a bit bland. Flat straight tree lined holes all much of a muchness .this would be the part that flooded then
This course has closed hasn’t it?
yeah . Im just editing all 2021 vids when I first started doing them as they were un an old format
Great video, I will take notes for when we eventually get there, easily done, missing a sign, I do it all the time, I have walked miles extra. Loved the photographs of the viaduct and estuary, it's a beautiful place, walked across that bridge many times on Barmouth daytrips. The views from up the hill after Fairbourne look amazing. I'm glad you made it back safe, I imagine walking that road in the dark was a bit scary. Thank you for the shout-out. All the best, Webby 👍
cheers Webby ..it really is a terrific walk from Barmouth to Llwyngwril..nothing wrong wirh signs..I was just reading guide book and walked right past it. Its after Llwyngril up in the fields where signage is poor .Ill go back and restart from there next time. I had the torch so just used it when cars were approaching .just annoying when you find out its gonna be 2 hours. Pint in Tywyn afterwards was one of the best ever!
@SmithyGolfandSmithyWalks Looking forward to it. I might follow the old railway trail that runs along that estuary aswell at some point, that looks a nice walk.
Strangely enough when you said you had 4 miles to Tywyn from Llwyngwril I thought that can't be right,I walked up and through Tonfanau, old go cart track and a few miles on the shore, you'll enjoy that next time John👍
@@trailsandalesfromwales3074 totally ballsed it up Phil. I wanted a shorter trip on a Sunday due to earliest train to Barmouth. Read the mileage chart wrong in guide book. When I was up in the hills above Llwyngwril realised there was a mistake somewhere. Lesson learnt and new batteries in the torch!
Played it many years ago, a tough test from memory, but some lovely holes out there
@@robertcoleman6153 yeah its a really good course .would look even better in summer when heather is out.
Best course in Nottinghamshire for me.
not played that many in Nottinghamshire but I think Sherwood Forest would edge it for me but then again only seeing Coxmoor in winter months. Always helps when heather comes out in bloom
@@SmithyGolfandSmithyWalks Sherwood is excellent too but the variety of holes at Coxmoor is what I like, and most of them are great looking too.
Its great watching your drives from all these elevated tees
Hollinwell is number 1 by a margin. Sherwood number 2, Coxmoor number 3...It's a beautiful course and coming in 3rd against Hollinwell and Sherwood is no bad thing...Hollinwell in my opinion and many others I've spoken to over the years is one of Englands finest inland tracks.
@@iiredeyeiiredeye1569 I can see that a lot of people would say that, but we all look for different things in a golf course and for me Coxmoor has the things I like to see.
Cracking video Smithy, it's a section I have not planned but I have walked the little bit at the end of your video. Before we started walking the coast path from Chester, we did walk Barmouth to Fairbourne, I photographed a WCP blue sign neat the fair and it's what I use for the intros of my videos, The second sign in the intro is somewhere on the way to Fairbourne. It looks a good long walk, we will probably split that into two walk when we get there. The train looks pretty regular and I like the look of those beaches. All the best, Webby 👍
@@WebbysWalks the next stage from Barmouth was really good until I ballsed it up reading the mileage chart on the guide book. Thouhht it was 12 miles when it was 17 and had to bail out when it got dark. Fair bit of editing to do lol
@SmithyGolfandSmithyWalks I started making my map for future sections and my line got to 20km quite a way before Barmouth, so I stopped drawing it. Lol. I'm on Abersoch to Pwllheli next. 👍 Where did you walk to from Barmouth?
@@WebbysWalks I thought Barmouth to Tywyn was 12 miles so I intended that on the Sunday as I couldnt get to Barmouth on train until 11. Got to Llywngwril not long after 3 oclock and thought it was 4 miles to Tywyn whereas it was 9 miles. I would have stopped at Llwyngwril if Id known.but continued and it took me way up high in fields and directions eere non existent. Knowing it was gonna get dark I had to make my way off the path and down to the main road. Had a 6.5 mile walk back along the road to Tywyn. Will start again at Llywngwril next time but on a weekday so I can start early. If weather stays ok will be back this year
@SmithyGolfandSmithyWalks Yes I looked at that, we did Barmouth to Fairbourne on a random walk before we began the whole coast path, will re walk it probably to Llywngwril when we get that way. I wanted to get to Pwllheli by the end of this year, Llyn Peninsular has been easier than Anglesey because of the public transport. Look forward to your next video, Do you have any other walks planned?
@@WebbysWalks 2 more sections of coastal path .to get to Machynlleth.
I thought exactly the same through them fields,I went the wrong way out of Harlech, walked along the track instead of going up
@@trailsandalesfromwales3074 even worse on next stage Phil. I ballsed up reading the mileage chart and even more difficult fields above Llywngwril
Well done John.
Great video John, Thank you for the shout out. You are gaining your lead, The Llyn Peninsular has slowed us down as the driving is so long. Hope to be back Saturday, weather permitting. Love the little railway, Portmerrion looks nice, I want to visit that, hopefully before we walk that section. The castle looks good too. Only visited Porthmadog once over 20 years ago, did not see much of it, on a whistle stop tour up the coast. It will be nice to explore all these places. There is only Barmouth I'm familiar with. All the best John, looking forward to more videos. 👍
@@WebbysWalks cheers Webby. I looked at visiting Portmeirion a few years ago but felt it a bit expensive so didnt bother. First stage back after covid so the distance was ideal. Quite a few sets of cows to pass but the ginger ones were absolutely beautiful.
Definitely better in the summer Smithy. I played there a couple of years ago. Runs fast with all the grass cut so well. Always feels like an attacking type of course 👍
@@richardcameron3762 I just find some of the tree lined parkland ones much of a muchness.
Played here many times, really nice course. The course where Peter Baker learnt his golf
@@robertcoleman6153 he is the pro but wasnt in. Good course but a stereotypical flat tree lined parkland for me without being distinctive. James Braid course so get the discount ..
Hello, good to have chat with in the bar, hope you made it to Tywyn ok and we all enjoyed watching your review of the course in the club house.
@@YorkshireMannowlivinginWal-y3n cheers mate .was cracking chatting to you guys in the bar. I messed up walking to Tywyn .read the mileage wrong and ended up walking 6.5 miles in the dark along the road back to Tywyn.
@@SmithyGolfandSmithyWalks Yep, we did see you going along the road next to the golf course, we had a feeling you would be either stopping over or walking in the dark, the dark it was, go steady.
I’ve been watching a few of your 9 hole course videos. I’m planning on taking my son to play some 9 hole courses over the winter. Could you reply with your top 5 9 hole course within maybe 60/70 miles from Glasgow please ?
@@ArcherTheGolfer will do .get back to you tomorrow
Do you know thats a really tough question. Cant think of any Ive played around Glasgow. Further afield .Comrie and St Filans are both good. Dalmally is good as well goingbtowards Oban but might be a bit wet in winter. Near Dunoon Inellan is good .Kyles of Bute near Tignabruich. Bute itself is good. Most of them on islands. Sorry cant be more helpful .its just all the 9 hole courses I remember are a bitbfar away. Bridge of Allan and Alva decent as well
On my first trip to the UK, I played Porthmadog Golf Club twice when I was staying in Portmeirion. I would like to play this course again in the future. This course is one of my four favorites that I have played so far.
I could play this course every day .love it.
How does that course play in the winter?
@@jackcalder2937 Ive no idea mate ..but Id imagine it would be decent .heathland turf .should dry out quickly
@@SmithyGolfandSmithyWalks is it common ground there, ie do yiu get loads of dog walkers like at Rushmere near Ipswich? Thanks
@@jackcalder2937 Ive only played there once on a trip round Norfolk and Suffolk. Cant recall see any walkers around the course. Id remembrr if there were cos they get on my nerves lol. Its well worth playing .really good course
Great little review! Was thinking about popping in here on the way through for a quick 9 holes. Wasn’t sure it’d be worth it, but for the price, after seeing this im going to give it a go
@@daniel_9500 cheers mate .yeah decent enough for a knock. Not the most difficult but a good golf facility
ONE OF THE BEST COURSES I HAVE PLD . THAT SAID IF YOU ARE LIKE ME FIND GOLF TOUGH UP AND DOWN HILLS THEN AVOID THIS , EXAMPLE OFF YELLOWS AT WOOLLEY PARK GOLF CLUB WAKEFIELD WEST YORKSHIRE THAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE LONGER THAN THIS AND YET WOOLLEY IS 4.5 MILES COOKRIDGE IS 7.2 MILES . I ENJOYED THIS BUT AS I MOSTLY PLAY 5 DAYS A WEEK ONCE HERE A WEEK IS ENOUGH .
Glad you like the course The members are great too thanks Jim Clarke
Hey John, I thought yer wer coming to Dorset after the West Country - the lure of home no doubt - ah well............comments at Wilmslow - agree with what you say about filming the person, in my alter ego, I do the same, film the course, and show its wares........although many good review channels, many are more aimed at the player/person, than the course, and this is what I like about yours, the course gets the review and not just the person!!
@@davidthomas5537 cheers David. I was away for 3 weeks .intended to come to Dorset but enjoyed South Devon too much and didnt have time. Im now in Croatia for the Scotland match so had to get home and get my washing done!
@@SmithyGolfandSmithyWalks Ha, Don't blame you, some good value courses in Devon - playing one of your recent visits tomorrow (Thurs) Teign Valley in a last swansong before it closes, well they say temporary, and to be re-opened as a leisure centre/hotel with a 9 hole course - yeh, we will wait with baited breath, just like the others that this lot are supposed to be doing - Farrington already gone...................hmmm - Croatia, lovely country now that they stopped shooting each other!
Brilliant Smithy. Nice course!!
The new owners are trying to turn it into a 12 hole course.. along with picket ball and paddle tennis.. new bar and restaurant and loads of lodges.. sports England have already objected to the 12 hole course plan..the owners haven't even got any planning permission to do anything apart rebuild the hotel.. but not along the 10th hole.. only where it was originally before it burnt down..

Smithy, I love the channel, but it would be great to see you hitting a few balls etc. as well.
Usually its too busy to set up the camera stand and film myself. Prefer to concentrate on the golf course. Im not a good golfer. I film players playing on the Mizuno Golf Pairs channel with a wee bit of commentary

Hi mate i know this is an old vid and you might not see this but im currently looking at joining a new course this year. I was looking at kings acre, prestonfield or broomiehall. Which did you prefer the best? Thanks
@@stewarteaston7197 Difficult one. Not played broomie..Kings Acre was nice .got a vid on Prestonfield as well but personally found it a bit repetitive .flattish and straight. But Im well aware we all have different preferences so Id advise just play both of them or 3 and see which suits you most. Ta for watching.
Sad to say that this is probably the only course that I have driven to and almost immediately turned round and left, it looked awful. However, I was on my way west for games at Carmathen, Milford Haven, Tenby and Pennard, and wanted a quick nine en-route. This was indeed a few years back, and your vid shows it in much better light than it was on my quick visit. However, looking back, I should have played there for I now realise that we must support these small (and in this case, family) courses, and OK, they are not going to set the world alight, but they provide an entry into the game, and much fun......I will now play anything anywhere and even if awful, will enjoy it - Once they are gone, thats it, the expensive ones will get even more so and the average will then become expensive, and fewer and fewer will be playing.......its started!
@@davidthomas5537 spot on
The body of water is the Severn Estuary. The Bristol channel is further down a little bit toward Avonmouth. Stinchombe Hill has interesting features but I agree that some of the holes get a little "samey", medium or long straight ish par 4s... The views are the best in Gloucestershire though. I know some will say Cleeve but I prefer here as you can see over the Severn and the Bridges. On a windy day it can be a pig to get around.
smithy did you ever review braid hills - edinburgh ?
