Sloppy steering in vans is pretty typical and it happens at fairly low mileage. Same with front suspension and brake issues. It's because there is so much weight forward in vans, and most of the braking power is always in the front on vehicles. Class B conversions are especially susceptible to early wear of these components due to the extreme load thay are under, being RV's. Check that transission, too. Service it often. The oversized cooler often isn't enough. Nice rig, though.

When looking at these Class B van conversions, defintely have the brakes, shocks, and suspension components checked - especially the front suspension and steering. These rigs are made on standard van chassis of either 3/4 ton or 1 ton design. The cabin and related build is very heavy, and you can't unload it like a regular work van. So, it is always max'd out - even when sitting still. The weight is hard on the brakes and hard on the suspension and steering, and requires periodic inspection and preventive maintenance. Don't assume those parts will be good because of low mileage. These are high wear components in heavy vans. Another potential weak spot is the transmission, which, despite having a large tranny cooler, will run very hot in a van due to lousy exterior air circulation. Don't rely on nice clean looking red tranny fluid. Anyone can change that before you get there. If they had manual transmissions like a true working truck, there would rarely be an issue. But no one wants to drive a manual anymore.

Thank you Jack You made some wonderful upgrades! I would love to add the extra table to my 2002 Roadtrek Popular as you did. I would like to know if you secured the hinges from back of the cabinet? Which is a 1/4 " panel so I'm worried it won't hold.

I have a 1999 Dodge Roadtrek 190 Popular. I have been living in it for 1 year now and I LOVE IT!!! I like that if I don't like my neighbors, then I can turn the ignition key and change my neighbors very easily!!! The only bad thing is the Police here in Los Angeles California seem to enjoy harassing Van Dwellers.

We enjoyed you video. We have a 97 Dodge Road trek 190 popular that probably needs new shocks. You replaced with Bilsteins. Do you remember the shock numbers. I have searched, but not sure which ones to order. Have you been satisfied with them? Thanks, happy camping.

Kathy Hawksford I was very pleased to come across your video of your Roadtrek. Thank you for sharing what you've learned about Roadtrek. I recently inherited a 1990 Roadtrek. While it was 'all original', the inside had a pervasive musty smell. The smell motivated me into remove the carpeting and fabric wall covering. I still need to learn how all the equipment (fridge, heater, toilet and air conditioner) work. When I read the comments below, I learned I need to figure out whether my Roadtrek has a generator - I have now included determining whether my Roadtrek has a generator :). I'm now on the final stretch of completing the upgrades and am so looking forward to learning how to run all the accessories and to new adventures in the Roadtrek. Thanks!!!

I appreciate your attitude about affordability. I feel like if I went into debt for such a thing, it would be less joyful and more worrisome. I'd probably also not feel so free to experiment with modifications. I think the problem-solving to make the unit "mine" would be a large portion of the fun! I see this video came out 7 months ago. I'd enjoy seeing an update on anything you've done since then.

Superb photography, awesome art, and narrative, it is a wonderful trip. Travelled most of the trip myself over the years, not Palo Duro or Garden of the Gods. Brought back many memories. Grew up in the San Joaquin Valley at the base of Yosemite. Many happy childhood memories from the many trips we took. Have been impressed since the time we visited you of your photography projects, Jack and Monica your art is not just beautiful it is intriguing, with your play of light and proportions. Jack & Monica, Your video tour is one of the most outstanding I've ever seen. It was great to see some of the places Shiela & I have visited and lived. We lived in Amarillo and of course went to Palo Duro Canyon many times. They have a fantastic music show in the Canyon during the summers. Colorado Springs and Garden of the Gods is another place we have visited. That is where our son James graduated from the Air Force Academy. BTW, he is now a Colonial and is stationed at Langley AFB as the Cybertthe commander and will soon be going to Boston as the head there. He lives on a 35' Hunter sailboat there near Langley AFB. We also enjoyed visiting Yosemite. This video is wonderful to see and I hope I can see more!
