    Do you think coffee or dairy could be alcoholic foods? Sugar and flour are for me, but wondering if I should abstain from the other two as well. Seems like a lot.

      If you have a question regarding coffee and dairy they may be an issue for you. The only way to know for sure is to cut them out, perhaps one at a time, for a week or so to notice if there is a difference in your cravings/overeating. All the best to you in your journey Topaz!       This is OA. For food addicts everything must be done by weighing and measuring to prevent cheating on portions. Because if you cheat on portions, that is a license to go way off your food plan. Thank you for the video.

    Thank you for your video. I appreciate following your food program. I have severe insulin resistance. I am eating on a plan of less than carbs a day. You are probably around 150 to 200 carbs a day.

    What I do when I bulk cook is immediately freeze what I don't plan to eat that day and defrost frozen food for next day overnight.

    Sounds almost identical to the LA Weightloss Diet from years ago. They required 64 ounces of water each day and allowed two protein bars a day (of which you could only purchase through their company).

    How do I make anything taste good? Without sugar fat and salt? What do you put on your meat, rice, veggies? Just Mrs. dash?

      Hey Big Z 69, I use my daily allotment (3 teaspoons) of measured olive oil on salad, cooked veggies, or starch serving. I use sea salt as it has no sugar added. Sugar is my drug of choice so never touch it. I use generous amounts of cinnamon instead of sugar to season cooked grains at breakfast or plain yogurt. Check out the spice aisle at the grocery store for seasonings! Look at the ingredients to be sure it contains just herbs and spices. you can get Italian blends, Asian blends, curry, etc. Stir-"fried" veggies are great with garlic, ginger, and Braggs amino acids (in place of soy sauce). Penzeys.com has many clean fresh spice blends but always check the ingredients for added sweeteners. Food manufacturers have trained our taste buds to crave sugar, fat, & salt. It takes a little while to re-train our tastebuds, but it is well worth it to taste delicious, healthy, real food again. All the best to you! Nancy D. Gratefully Recovering Food Addict

      Hi FMQ; Social occasions require thinking ahead. Abstinence no matter what, no matter what, abstinence! For social events, I call ahead to find out what will be served. If say the protein doesn't fit my plan I'll bring some of my own. Also some people eat before the event and have herbed tea or water with lime. After all, we no longer attend events to overeat, we attend events to socialize, if I don't particularly like the people or they are toxic, I won't go, I'm taking care of myself now. When I'm planning on going to a restaurant I look up the restaurants menu ahead of time to make sure they offer foods on my food plan. I look for plain steak or seafood, (chicken is shot up with chemicals) salad ordered without croutons, cheese, etc.(I bring my own 'clean' dressing or ask for plain olive oil). I order a plain sweet/potato using sea salt and some of the 'clean' dressing. If no potato is available I'll take my own baggie of measured defrosted green peas to discreetly add to the salad. On holidays, if the celebration is held at my house I serve tasty foods that also fit into my plan. I will save out my portion before adding ingredients not on my plan. I think of it as a puzzle, figuring out how to make myself and loved ones happy. If eating at someone else's home, I'll call and check on the menu ahead of time, (I say I'm now treating food 'sensitivities' I feel better eating this way, etc.), and bring a dish to share that fits my food plan. If I'm following my food plan to the letter, in time, I will not be envious or craving what others 'can have' my body will be satisfied and well nourished. I wouldn't trade my peace of mind and freedom from the foods that hurt me for anything! Always being polite and not advertising our food plan or schooling people on the errors of their ways just because we've seen the light. If someone asks about my food plan I offer to tell them all about it at another time. If I think social occasions or eating out will be a challenge to my abstinence I'll stay safely at home, for now, social occasions will get easier as time goes on.       @@eshjane If I am flying I prepare two meals to take with me in my carry-on bag because of delays that usually happen with air travel. The airport food is not usually that 'clean' and is overpriced. When I stay with family, my first stop is at the grocery store to pick up the foods that support my food plan. If I stay at a hotel I purchase food from the grocery store that is easy and convenient to use and I store it all in the room's mini fridge. When I'm planning on going to a restaurant I look up the restaurants menu ahead of time to make sure they offer foods on my food plan. I look for plain steak or seafood, (chicken is shot up with chemicals) salad ordered without croutons, cheese, etc.(I bring my own 'clean' dressing or ask for plain olive oil). I order a plain sweet/potato using sea salt and some of the 'clean' dressing. It's a matter of planning ahead for success and it can be fun and creative figuring out how to keep with your food plan.     Sugar isn’t my issue. I could eat a high sugar something and not be triggered as I am a type 1 diabetic since childhood. I was conditioned not to eat sugar. Now put a pile of wings in front of me and I would binge. So, it is all individual in developing a food plan.

    Thanks so much for sharing your experience and all of this information. I am sorry if I missed it, but does the plan go for all heights, body structures, absorbtion rates and activity levels? (I do not expect an "expert answer", this is just meant as a general question. I am muscular and on the somewhat taller side and pretty active. I have gut issues and I am not sure if I am really absorbing as many calories as other people. If I eat under 2700 cals I lose weight quickly and usually cannot maintain the plan for too long. My doctor couldn't really comment on it so I do not know more for now. I figure a short & petite person with a sedentary job and a healthy gut might have very different needs from me.)

      Excellent question Wesenskern! I know a woman who follows the exact food plan is shorter than I am and wears clothes 3 sizes smaller! Our bodies are all different! Kay says her plan supports 45 minutes of exercise daily. She has suggested athletes follow the food plan for men. Protein is increased to 6 oz, 5 oz for beef, and 3 eggs are a protein serving at each meal. Also, the oil serving is bumped up to 2 tablespoons or 6 teaspoons per day. (found on her site).     Do NOT wear blue trousers when dealing with these love. They take the yellow and turn it green underneath your skin forever. Never harvest if the sun's over the yardarm. Take a reading from the fo'c'stle first to see if it is time. I can't tell you if you actually have butaregas though because there's something called a "rutabaga" that's very similar.

    Around seven years ago cardiology put me in the top 10% to have a heart attack. I knew I was 70 pound overweight and ill - I don't carry any extra weight well at all. I settled on a whole food plant-based no oil diet and lost the 70 pound @a pound a week and counted calories. My blood pressure returned to that of an early 20 yr old, despite blocked coronary arteries and my abnormally high cholesterol halved - all without any medication. I spent several years thereafter studying dietary health. I also noted that I am or can be quite addictive and undisciplined with some foods (I am also 40 years sober). I was horrified watching myself put on around 45 pounds over the last three years. I'd have bet my house I would never have allowed that to happen - but it did because I decided I could eat a bit of this and a bit of that. I am in the process of losing that 45 pounds right now and I have found listening to the experience of people like you educating. I am eating lean animal protein at the moment as it is simpler - but for health, I personally am sold on a whole food plant-based diet 95% of the time for health - including inflammation. For me, it is the animal products (and grains) that are the culprits for much illness. One of the last remaining hunter/gatherer tribes are the Hadza - the men catch animal products once every 7-10 days, the rest of the time they eat berries and tubers (potassium) etc the women and children gather. Those that survive the environmental dangers and reach senior years appear to be free of heart disease and diabetes.

      Hi Dan, I've searched online for anti-inflammatory vegetables. I've cut them out along with all sugar & sweeteners, dairy, grains, all flours, and soy for example as they cause inflammation when I consume them. Fermented vegetables are helpful to gut health. I have generational high cholesterol. I just read an article today that there is a link between high cholesterol and inflammation, this makes sense in my case. My anti-inflammatory food plan includes lean, humanely raised protein, low-inflammatory vegetables, and quality oils, such as olive & avocado in the appropriate number of calories for my height, age, & activity level. I also take appropriate multivitamins and supplements, such as calcium. I have a daily practice of moderate exercise, prayer, & meditation that I find to be very important. We need to take good care of mind, body, & soul. I find Overeaters Anonymous meetings (oa.org) invaluable in helping with my 'alcoholic' foods. Food is usually our first addiction in life.       @@GratefullyRecoveringFoodAddict For me, the problem of inflammation is likely with animal protein and perhaps refined carbs. I have kept an accurate food diary for around eight years and much of the time recorded my postprandial blood glucose using a fingerprick blood meter. For this reason I learned that refined carbs sent my blood glucose through the roof and added fats held it there. In my case grains have a similar effect. Apart from possibly tomatoes I eat most vegetables and tofu and soy protein. But I am probably coming from a different angle. After some years of weighing up the conflicting views out there, I decided that I believed more some of the vegan doctors/scientists, T Cambell, Caldwell Esselstyn, valter Longo etc over the others. But I am uncertain for myself to what extent animal products, like occasional sardines for example are tolerable or even beneficial. All the 'experts' and scientists are still disagreeing and many are funded by animal product industry. So I don't claim to have the definitive answer. I had my last drink of alcohol in 1982 and without the example of other AA members which eventually changed my psyche/mindset I would never have become abstinent - but I left after 12 years as I had a strong belief that the God part was a red herring and misleading. And so I approached OA via youtube because I learn tremendously in not what anyone believes, but in what they have actually done and are doing. It is educational and I appreciate it.

    I wanted to suggest you do a video about how your recovery affected your husband and if he was helpful or not but it sounds like you’re divorced, and maybe that precedes your recovery. Might be a touchy subject for you. Been there, done that. Current husband here is not helpful.

      I'm sorry you're not feeling supported at home Shelley. We're in recovery to save ourselves and must power on under every circumstance. The Serenity Prayer comes to mind. Sometimes the spouse sees a change and is worried about what that will mean in the future. When we start to love and care for ourselves, we no longer put up with mistreatment. In my disease didn't think I was worth it and didn't deserve any better treatment. (just talking for myself) This last time I was able to pull together long-term abstinence our teen daughter and my husband at the time had been witnesses to my struggle. At first, they figured that this latest 'diet' would fizzle out in failure like all my other attempts and didn't take it seriously, who could blame them? The difference this time was I put down my 'alcoholic' foods (sugar etc.) so I was able to stick with the food plan without cravings and temptation. We can't expect anyone else to support us by following our food plan, etc. My family did show their support by going out for pizza & ice cream for example, so I didn't have to watch them enjoying those foods. Also, we had a cupboard in the kitchen and a draw in the fridge dedicated to 'their' foods, foods I didn't want to eat and so didn't need to open that cupboard and I wasn't having to make the decision not to eat something every time I saw it. That took cooperation and consideration on their part. After a while, my family was willing to help in any way they could because I was a changed person, a loving wife and mother not an unhappy b!#@h, obsessed with food to distraction.       Thanks so much for your thoughtful reply. My husband thinks there’s no problem, but I know better. Sometimes I have it more tamped down than other times, but I check all the boxes. Trying again.
