Do you have any advice on how to get some practice shoots under your belt when you don’t really know a lot of people where you live? should I offer free shoots in a Facebook group? I just need more practice to build some confidence but am not super comfortable with anyone in my area to practice on lol 😭😭

The best start when it comes to your camera/lens etc is to NEVER buy new, its like buying a new car because the value plummets once you walk out the door. Besides value, yesterdays PRO cameras are SOOO good its crazy. A skilled person shoots with a 10 year old camera and good lenses can create wonders, and no person viewing the images would not be able to tell you what make, brand, or model you use. Personally I only buy 2nd hand PRO grade cameras, and my last purchase (Canon 1DX MK1) only set me back 500 USD and I know it will last me for decades, keep in mind, the price when this was released was over 6000 USD. This body + good lenses can handle any job you throw at it, and none of my paying clients or customers can see if I use the latest model, or shoot with my 1DX that is 12 years old now. It is better to buy 2nd hand old PRO gear (decent wear and tear of course) than to buy new cheaper models. If my breaks down for whatever reason, I will buy the same again, not spending on modern overpriced gear. I am NOT alone, many photographers STILL find the 1DX Mark I to be a hugely capable camera for professional use, especially for sports and action photography. Its still a daily workhorse for many pros.

I am new to photography did a course in it in high school, adored it and I loved portrait photography. But I stopped but it’s strong desire of mines to do this again and take it seriously this time. And the tip it’s about the photographer not the camera hit me since I can only afford to shoot on my iPhone for now. Now time to binge your videos 🎉❤

Nice video. Some great tips. It is nice to see someone talk about used gear to start. And I also first got serious with an EM10 Mark 2. Still have my EM 5 Mark 2. I kept the Olympus largely so I can use my large collection of vintage film camera lenses too. But these days my main cameras are my Pentax K5 IIs and a Nikon D300. None of my cameras were brand new when I got them. And I use different cameras for different jobs. And I know this will sound like an excuse for using older second hand gear but knowing the limits of your equipment and figuring out work arounds can force you to get creative and problem solve. I mean I get some pros that use their camera everyday for work just don't have time to do that but I think it can be very useful to learn early on how to figure out solutions in creative ways or if you are doing photography more as an art project it can sometimes lead to some cool discoveries.

This video is incredibly relatable. For the past year I have put off creating and posting videos out of fear .. failure and rejection. But I finally put that aside and took that leap. And your self portraits are amazing I would have thought someone else was behind the camera! Keep up the content !
