Love the multifaceted nature of Gustave because he just stood up for Zero from possibly getting killed but immediately followed with "how's your mother, send her my love" which makes "he took care of me as a lonely young boy" extremely weird 😂

He tries levity…he manages to get a reaction from “Franz”. But it’s not enough; and when they attempt to “remove” Zero…Gustave doesn’t hesitate; he immediately defends him & actively resists, knowing full well he might be executed. …and because of the dignity & class of his history…bringing glimmers of joy in an ugly world… …he has his kindness returned in kind. Foreshadowing, yes…but I love this character: he was a scoundrel; but in his bones he was a good person.

There must have been some foolish half-good Captains at the start but as the war went on there were fewer and fewer until there was no-one, even on the Facist side, to hold back the dishonourable animals in the field.
