On this day in 1981, at exactly 12:01 am, MTV made its broadcast debut with the words "Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll." The MTV concept launched a cultural revolution, and its unexpected success made Nina Blackwood, Mark Goodman, Alan Hunter, J.J. Jackson, and Martha Quinn overnight celebrities as the network's first VJ's. Stayed in it's original format for about 10 years before reality sh...

A Video taken by an onboard camera of a flight I did in S.C. with my RC airplane, a Precision Aerobatics Mini Katana electric.
I'm a late 80s kid grew up in the 90s and the only real exposure I got as far as the OG MTV was the Beavis and Butthead segments where they would rip on different music videos LOL classic but respect to all the people that remember this original launch day
Pat Benatar was 2nd song. Her husband 1st guitarist too
Back when music was played on MTV.
Got it right out of the gate then left the track into a world of garbage programming.
I was there.
If you had mtv, you had cable, and probably owned a VCR.. That required a few dollars in them days , my hood didn't get cable service until 1989-1990, missed all of this 😮
They killed it. Put the music/TV show back!!!!
i am old enough to remember when Mtv first aried i was 7 years old and i still remember this moment in history and this song word for word man this brings back such awesome memories
Too bad it didn't stay true to itself. MTV used to be the best.
I wish they would bring back MTV!
I was watching it on the first day. I was in the USAF and all the Airmen were watching this within 24 hrs. We were amazed and this is the first video I saw.
Damn I was 11 years old ,now I'm 53 serious a while.😂I remember like it was yesterday. The 80's was definitely when everyone, and everything became obvious that we were living in a new time and that's when everything changed the taste in music the culture the wait we all dressed and wild clothing we had girls with gigantic hairdos it was just wild you know we used to run up and down the hallways and school carrying those trapper keeper notebooks just who remembers all the times of the 80s it's hard to remember everything unless you take a trip and watch a video somewhere but seriously it was one hell of a decade you know and I myself it was a remarkable time to grow up as a boy and turn into a teenager and a young man
UA-cam killed about everything 📺
I remember every one of them
Well that took me back in time! 😃
I remember when they did just music videos. Not the trash they do now.
I remember this day! I remember where and who I was with! It was an awesome historical musical event! 1980s Rocked!!!!!!!!!
This is the MTV that I love 🤩😍and miss so much 😒😢😞😢
I was 14 when MTV started. It changed my world forever! I remember my friends and I sitting around for hours watching and seeing for the first time what some of the bands actually looked like.
Wonder what was the last video played.
Loved putting MTV on in the background and playing just that, 24/7. How many times did I have it going while getting ready to go out for the night.
They completely ruined a perfect format.
I remember the debut of MTV! It was amazing and exciting. Cable was a fun new thing!! Video killed the radio star 🌟
I graduated from highschool in 1983...grew up in the best times...who else misses those days. RIP to all my friends who are unfortunately not with us anymore.... Remember all the fun good times 😁😁
You mean when they actually played music videos!! Not the crap they have now !!
One of those moments where I remember where I was with a group of friends in San Gabriel. It was an event for us (I was 19). The second song was Pat Benatar's Shadows of the Night.
I remember this, I didn't think life could get any better. What a time to be a teenager.
That was my first day in Navy bootcamp.
why did they call their curators VJ's 😭😭😭😭✋
ahhh so the first music video was a different one to what is the official one on The Buggles channel.
I had such a crush on Martha Quinn.
This is not the original video.
SMOKING POT AND WATCHING MTV lfe was good back then
START WITH A BANG BY GOING TO A COMMERCIAL BREAK BEFORE ANY MUSIC! LOL.
I was 7
Awesome. I was 10
Bring back MTV!
My… How time flies…
My dad actually appreciated MTV more than we did 😂 He knew all the coolest music… Talking Heads, B52s, Devo before they were big 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Mmmmmmm, love me some young Martha Quinn 😍😍😍😍😍.
I was 12 years old when this got its start. Every kid had a crush on Nina.
Bro was spot on from day one. I wouldn’t look at music the same way without modern music videos.
So long ago-I was a month away from my 11th birthday but I loved it 😍
Mtv should've kept playing videos. ... but that would've been. RIDICULOUS !!! 😉
And thus began my nearly 40 year OBSESSION with Duran Duran!❤❤❤🎉
I just saw the Buggels with Seal...Off the hook.. Still!! 2024!
Video Killed the Radio Star being MTV's first video was a little ironic. 😅
From MTV to OnlyFans. Ain’t ya proud America?
Time went by fast.
Not a tattoo in sight.
