Setup an NVR and record on a NAS for long-term recording storage. You can use SSH tunneling for remote access from any device on your network. My setup: Multiple cameras that do not have internet access, and are on a separate VLAN for IoT security. To access cameras and footage while away I use WireGuard to tunnel into the network. I have a 4TB SAN to hold all of the recordings. Give it a try! ...

Ditch Google Photos and Backup Your Pictures With Syncthing - Android Devices

Google Photos is great but free space is limited. You are also feeding the Google engine with your data. Keep your pictures private by using syncthing and backing up to local storage. I also automate backing up my photos to a personal cloud storage drive for two copies. Having a local copy and a cloud copy provides that extra layer of protection. One copy of a file is not a backup! There are up...

What RUNS My Network?
Переглядів 3811 місяців тому
I talk about what network devices I have and their functionality. I talk about how I utilize network security to separate my devices from others and also from my servers. I also ran into a minor glitch that you'll have to watch to see what happened.
I was planning on doing just that. Got my raspberry pi 5 the other day. Got a Terraria (game) server running on a raspberry pi 400. Was fun to install 🙂 Learned a lot and I want to learn more.
Is Linux Sys admin still relevant in 2024? I thought everyone was moving to DevOps and Cloud Computing
Still very relevant! Doing a job search online produces plenty of results. Even full cloud shops would hire sys admins for managing the OS (mostly large companies that can afford a large staff with specific duties).
Hi, I have 2 questions: 1) What happens when you want to free space on your phone? Cause after all, thats the point of unloading your media right? Not only to have a backup but also to not have a phone bursting with "hard" media... 2) How do you deal with doubles on your cloud storage? Or does your script ONLY uploads whatever new media it finds?
Great questions! Syncthing will mark the files as synced once copied, so as long as my script has run to move the synced photos to my NAS, I can delete off my phone (since it will also delete from the destination). It's a push only sync so when photos are deleted out of the sync folder, they stay on my phone until I free up space. Syncthing will only sync newly added files, so if they were already synced it will not copy again, even if deleted at the destination folder. Hopefully this makes sense.
Thanks for this. got my first job in IT a year ago. But have more than a fountaional knowlwedge from 3 years of homelab experience. You have given me so much more confidence to push forward at my currrent workplace to get those skills logged on my CV (resume) and push for a promotion. Thanks again!
That is great! A homelab is invaluable to developing new skills and maintaining the old. I'm glad this video helped you, that makes creating these all worth it.
I am more or less already familiar with 6 key points that you mentioned but one thing really slows me down is coding, do you code a lot other than Bash or Shell script?
Bash and python are what we use most in our environment. Bash for server maintenance/automation and python for managing switches. ChatGPT can really come in handy for solving a logic puzzle or generating code. It's not always 100%, but it will quickly help you get back on track. Spend more time in the logic and how to solve problems vs learning syntax. Of course each environment is different when it comes to scripting needs and some rely on it more than others.
I wouldn't say its that easy since almost 70 to 80 percent of the Linux Sysadmin jobs out there is in the DoD sector that often requires a Secrete or Top Secrete Clearance. You may find a few Red Hat jobs in finance and banks but no that many of those jobs exists. Most sysadmin jobs out there are mixed Windows and Linux environment. With more and more companies moving more to the cloud that less Linux Sysadmin jobs. DevOps Engineers, SRE Engineers and Cloud Engineers are the modern sysadmins today. Lots of Linux is used in the Cloud.
All valid points! The typical Linux Sys Admin is morphing into other job titles, however the Linux experience itself is still very valuable. Not everything is a SaaS solution so being a Linux admin, even in your own Homelab, is a pathway to DevOps. Like you said, "lots of Linux is used in the cloud." Thanks for your thoughts on this topic.
@@SteeleTech77 Yeah plus a lot of automation is used today esp Ansible and Python. I use the SaltStack in my role as a Sr. Desktop Support Tech and RHEL Workstation Admin which is similar to Ansible, Puppet and Chef. Linux is a foundational skill set but you have to know a lot more than just Linux these days esp Kubernetes and Containers, Virtualization, DevOps tools as well as Generative A.I.
No offence but unless you're a convicted felon, security clearance is extremely easy to get, you literally just have to apply......
@@sportbikeguy9875 You have get sponsored and takes close to a year to be granted one after a lengthy investigation. Plus most Linux Sysadmin roles are asking with "Active Clearances" to fill the role right away. I work in the Defense industry hense why I work with Red Hat.
@eman, do you think that getting a certif like RHCSA Linux + Security clearance is invaluable to get into Government jobs ?
Totally agree with you. I have so many playlists here on UA-cam on various IT topics. There’s a literal goldmine of content here on UA-cam that is largely untapped.
Yes, indeed! A wealth of information at our fingertips. Thanks for sharing.
A degree has potential to give so much more than people realise.... its fun an games to say "oh its just for the piece of paper" and now conclude we don't *need* that paper hence don't need the degree- however its actually alot more invaluable than that.
I agree with you...there are many reasons to get a degree. Not everyone has the opportunity to attend a college or university, so these changes allow for those individuals to not give up, and continue to pursue an IT career by way of certifications and hands-on experience.
@@SteeleTech77 100% not everyone has that chance but alot of people I've noticed think they don't have a chance (eg I never thought in a million years ide go to uni) but there are so so so many more pathways and options and those who outright try to give people an easier path scare me
@@Uncreeperble If anyone is looking at these changes as an easy way out vs using it as a stepping stone then they won't make it very far. Time will tell if this direction is a good thing or not. Thank you for the discussion, all valid and insightful points.
what backpack is that?
I bought this back in 2019 so it's discontinued now. There are alternatives to it that are very simliar though. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07RDL99Q5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This is my dream job. I struggle with showcasing my home lab experience on my resume, though. On another note, I just passed the Linux Essentials exam this morning, now onto LPIC 1!
Congrats! Resumes are challenging for sure, but you are moving in the right direction.

Does the sysadmin do all of the security of the computer systems , or theres another assistant thats focused on security?@@SteeleTech77
lol my bag looks the same. just bottomless cables
Same, but I edited out the part where I pulled out items from the bag and all those cables came with it 😂

My photos seem to lose the metadata such as the geolocation when they are synched.... any hint about it?
I haven't paid much attention to metadata but I'll take a look and see what I come up with!
@@SteeleTech77 nevermind that, it simply took a while for Google Photos to actually load the geotag of the pictures uploaded from a synched device
I'm using Syncthing to back up files from my Android phone to my PC. Despite granting all necessary permissions and disabling battery restrictions, clearing recent apps on my Android causes Syncthing app to stop and to disconnect from my desktop PC. So the backup stops. I'm looking for a solution to prevent this disruption.
Is it a Samsung? My wife's phone does the same thing so I've also been trying to figure out a solution. For now I just remind her to open the app when I see her photos are not backing up from my script that pushes to cloud storage. I have a Pixel and have no issues. If I come up with a resolution I'll edit my response and let you know.
@@SteeleTech77 It's a Xiaomi phone running on MIUI. The purpose of automatic backup is compromised when it disconnects after closing the app, even with battery restrictions disabled. If you come across any updates on how to keep the app running in the background, please let me know. That would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

it would be great if you could make another video where you give us details of the homelab like physical part and then software and vm's
Thank you for the suggestion. I have been wanting to get back to the homelab series so this will be on the top of my list.

Haha, it's a tough reality

Thank you for your insight! I'm not sure how UA-cam suggested your video, but I am grateful that it did. I dabble in Linux and am looking to become an AIX (UNIX) engineer. But, I am not comfortable in jumping straight into certification unless I get more hands-on experience. Although I had a good idea where to start on system administration, this is a great 'real world' explanation of what you really need to know to do 90% of the work.
Thank you for the feedback! The Unix world can seem overwhelming, but the operating system is so solid most of the day-to-day administration is maintenance.
So helpful to see what to actually click and have step by step instructions.
Thank you for the feedback 👍
More photos!!
Sorry, just the one 😂
Can you add DIY vids to teach how to mirror your set-up?
I'm going to start a series on OBS Studio. Monday a video on adding a green screen to a current setup will be released, and after that I'll start from beginning stages. Thanks for the suggestion!
