Sorkin omitted that the names read weren't just U.S. servicemen, but Vietnamese as well. It transformed this from being the brutal cost of an immoral war to 'support the troops'. He defanged the politics throughout.

OK, I object strongly to that "Bucky is beloved because he's redeemable" line. He's not Darth Vader. He wasn't exercizing any kind of free will or autonomy when he killed those people. He was literally tortured to a point where he was left with irreversible brain damage. Tortured and brainwashed to such an extent that he couldn't remember his own name, and reduced to a state were he wasn't capable of doing anything except comply. That's relatable because despite what we might say *all* of us could break if we were tortured enough. We all have limits. He's beloved because he's a good person who was forced against his will to do awful things, but in spite of that is still trying to be good and not to hurt anyone: we know he's a moral person because he still feels guilt and shame over actions that he was forced to perform under duress and when not in control: which is something a villain would not do. He's beloved because he could have just given in to all the pain, abuse and torture and allowed himself to be corrupted by it- but instead he survived and tried to reclaim his humanity, his kindness and his protective nature. A lot of characters (looking at you Zemo) use their pain, loss and suffering as an excuse for their misdeeds and for doing harm to others: but Bucky doesn't. Instead he tries to be better, to rise above his suffering, to not do harm and to even do good if he can. He's beloved because he's probably endured more suffering than any other character in the MCU, and had no choice in almost anything that happened to him but when he does get to exercize his autonomy again, he chooses to try and do good and to help others. Despite all that he almost never puts himself first and doesn't become bitter or angry with the world. He's beloved because he's a survivor. That's why many abuse survivors and trauma victims love him. Someone below said that everything that happened to Bucky is a lot like a r*pe analogy. He didn't have a choice, he didn't even give consent to being given the super-soldier serum. He didn;t have bodily autonomy and was punished or tortured for any attempt to assert autonomy or refusal to comply. Instead of recognizing that he was a victim, most characters blame him and think he wanted it, or chose it.

So a few point. First of all, Bucky was held by HYDRA for 69 years, not 90 years. From January 1945 until 2014. I don't even know where they got the 90 years part from, I suspect its just a lazy oversight. Second, Sam's "advice" in Episode 5-6 is terrible. He bascially tells Bucky he has to "cure himself" of PTSD by "putting in the work". No mental health professional (which Sam is meant to be) would say that. He also dismisses and ignores clear symptoms of trauma and a nervous breakdown in John Walker as him being "crazy" and makes no effort to help or support him (instead siding with Lemar's killers). Note: many psychologists and therapists won't even allow the word "crazy" to be used in a mental health context. The way the show treats PTSD as basically magically disappearing by means of a person with the condition basically self-flagellating and taking the blame for actions they were forced to perfom under duress is actually vile. I would even go as far as to call it a step backwards in terms of mental health representation in the media. The fact that the other character with trauma (John) is villainized and casually brushed off makes it even worse. For goodness sake, writers, **please** put in the work. Do actual research on PTSD, mental health, therapy, and recovery before depicting it. By failing to do so, you are not helping the cause of representation or destigmatizing mental health, you are just perpetuating harmful stereptypes and misconceptions. The movies actually do a better job of portraying Bucky's PTSD than the series, probably because Sebastian Stan did his homework, researched PTSD at some length and reportedly even spoke to veterans.

One highly theorized reason Bucky sleeps on the floor is because he was possible SAd as a result of Hydra. It’s not uncommon, it happened in the Red Room a lot, but it’s certainly a possibility considering SA is used as a power move over victims, and one huge side effect of victims is that they sleep on the floor or other unconventional places because beds remind them of their assault.

When you see everything through the apophenic and misandric feminist ideological lens, you don't see reality. You see a fictional world that only exists in your mind. You can find misogyny in the air we breathe and the water we drink. For you, everything is male oppression, and all women are victims of the patriarchy. Your review of the series was an exhausting and tedious woke exercise of Where's Waldo, or in this case, where's the patriarchy. Your "analysis" revealed nothing about the series but laid bare your contemptuous feminist insecurities. I learned nothing about the series but a lot about you and your woke ideology.

Is this confirmed? because it seems like a bit of a stretch to assume because he is in a shadow, it is therefore an intentional nod at Jung's idea of "the shadow" Also, the shadow in Jung's philosophy isn't necessarily the "unknown". It refers more to one's darker side of the unconscious. It is true that the shadow can possess unknown or repressed negative traits which influence us, but those things can be equally "known" but simply not addressed, so i don't think the unknown is an apt description. But in regards to the film, his dim lighting to represent a million things; Jung's the shadow isn't high on the list in my opinion

  • @englishlady9797

I think he had more than just PTSD, but that's my opinion. Or rather, he probably already had PTSD in the 1940s, because the poor man was already being experimented on by HYDRA when Steve rescued from from that facility. My guess is he might've had some neurological damage from the electric shocks they kept giving him to "wipe" his memory as well. I mean that wasn't like electroconvulsive therapy- because the shocks were clearly a lot stronger than that, since he was screaming in agony from them. Personally, I wasn't too keen on how they handled the PTSD in the series. They seem to have forgotten about it after Episode 2 and devoted more time to the other storylines then just added a few seconds as an afterthought in the final episide with him confessing what he did to Yumi's son. We needed *way* more time for that. Was that therapist deliberately trying to trigger him as well? She kept doing that thing with the pen and notebook?

There is nothing profound about this film other than how bad it is! You've been consuming child-fantasy themed movies for too many years. This isn't intellectually challenging unless you're already challenged. I paid for the Blu-ray, and tried to enjoy it. Everything was recycled! Everything! The music, the scenes. What was with the love scene? It was so sad! A 50-year old single mother with a disapproving daughter fantasy? The love interest was superfluous! She didn't matter because she contributed nothing. Unlike the love interest of the first movie. She was Maverick's instructor, and it was their little secret that she admired him enough to let him, a reckless youth, into her personal life. He was always looking for thrills, and the tragedy of his friend's death grounded him. She challenged him at that point. Played against his sense of responsibility and his ego to get him back into service. He had his character arch. In this new production, it's just a bunch of nonsense. Think about it... the impossible mission could have been accomplished by a small team with a drone. And it wasn't impossible at all. No casualties! They all survived, unscathed. Not even loading up their pants, coming close to death or anything. It's not like Maverick was going down. He's the point of the entire film. But the other pilots could have been taken out. So it was basically summer camp with a video game. Their equipment fails mid mission and they still get the "impossible" job done. Maverick pilots an inferior plane, gets the drop on one enemy jet, but him overcoming the last one except that he ran out of missiles? What is this nonsense? And you want to invest so much of your spirit into something so lame. Look back to better movies. You'll find plenty to talk about. This is like getting excited over a badly put together ritz cracker sandwich. It's not worthy. Eventually, the same kind of people who loved J.J. Abram's take on "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" will come around as they've done before. They'll say... this wasn't that good. Some will even dare to say... this was bad, all except the action which at least had some thrills. But that's it. Shake your head. You're under some kind of spell.

Shes walking around scantly clad, from the male perspective this doesn't ring any alarm bells. Fair enough if that male wasn't watching the Queen's Gambit. however, in the show's context, it is a double fire alarm. The problem is confusing characters with real people and movies with reality. Both are simulacrums, not the tangible reality we live through. If movies didn't have a gaze they would be unbearable to watch, like news footage without editing.

Hello Tom, what an interesting perspective that misses the point that all media has a responsibility due to the it power to enforce, create and reinforce negative concepts, ideas and opinions. Additionally Movies and 'REALITY' people and characters may have separation for you but for many they live vicariously through the characters they love and follow. These characters can influence their lives hugely based entirely on the decisions of the filmmakers. I would also recommend The Science of Storytelling book as it may challenge your concept of reality.

Well…”The 39 Steps” was made in Britain, not the USA, so the Hays Code did NOT apply to it. You can clearly see a variety of things in 1930s British movies which would’ve been prohibited in American movies at this time, and that’s because there was no similar national censorship. (I’m thinking of the lyrics to some George Formby songs as just one example.) Hitchcock made this film for his home market and its release in the US was only a secondary consideration, so saying this particular scene was to defy the Hays Code is a big stretch. It was just Hitchcock being naughty and suggestive the way he always wanted to be.

Agreed Hitchcock was naughty. I disagree that it had nothing to do with the hays code. The movie may have been made in the UK but it was the film that broke Hitchcock into the American markets in a way that none of his previous 21 movies were able to. It was always intended from production to be released in America.

I have watched The 39 Steps many times and I always wonder why the Vicar was in that scene. Not even sure where he was sitting in the car. Great movie, however.

I’m only 3 seasons deep, and I really enjoyed Tom and gerri, but I think the 2 standouts by far, are the call centre episode, and the crossword episode. Both of those had me shook.

Gosh yes those are both great episodes! The call centre episode was directed by both Recce and Steve actually! The crossword episode was darker than most in a very shakespearian way.
