An Overdue Double Feature of The Callisto Protocol and the Dead Space Remake
I realize that this video has arrived long after Callisto and Dead Space have been figuratively dead and buried in the discourse, but better late than never!
Survival horror has had many pioneers and icons in the relatively short history of video games, and the enduring popularity of the subgenre is due in no small part to the original Dead Space from 2008. Their successes helped Visceral Games make their mark on history, and although they ultimately failed to find the blockbuster success that Electronic Arts wanted to have, their influence have long outlived the trilogy. And after a decade of radio silence, we astonishingly have a remake from a young EA studio and a spiritual successor from a reformed studio of veterans. Both games coming out at around the same time, and both of them wanting to claim the legacy of Dead Space as their own. In this video essay, I want to give a comparative review of The Callisto Protocol and the Dead Space remake, analyzing their presentations, gameplay systems, worldbuilding, and narratives, all the while comparing and contrasting them with the original Dead Space.

Gearing Up
Переглядів 10110 років тому
This is our last film with the Film Studies 35 group and at Jasper Place High School. Thanks for the memories! Perry Eugene Smith is a student who has yet to do the most important thing in his lifetime, but is beaten down by ridicule, discouragement, and thoughts of inadequacy. But this time, he finds the courage and the strength to do what everybody else has done a thousand times over.
Stigma
Переглядів 4910 років тому
This is our first film made with the Film Studies 35 group to create a film that conveys a dominant mood or impression. The film revolves around the most popular guy in school. A football star with a wide group of friends and a loving girlfriend. But he wrestles with coming to terms with his bisexuality and the prejudices and stigmas of our society push him towards a lethal path.
Diverge

This is our submission to the International Baccalaureate (IB) at the Standard Level with our Film Studies 25 group. It tells the story of a young man whose mistakes in the past have brought him a life of sadness and misery. Now, he tries to track down his long-lost son to find some happiness and perhaps purpose.
Game of Chess
Переглядів 6411 років тому
Shot on location in Jasper Place High School in Edmonton, AB. Game of Chess is an experimental film in my Film Studies 25 to present a game of chess for a minute, but show only a single move. This was meant to express "Soviet Montage Theory", which is an approach to rely heavily on editing and the sequencing of shots rather than dialogue to express an idea or evoke an emotion. To better underst...

Shot on location in Jasper Place High School in Edmonton, AB. This is merely an experimental film we were assigned in Film Studies 25. We had to utilize annoying laughter, POV shots, a magical item, two spiral shots, and chickens in our film while presented in a recognizable genre.
The Red Tie

Shot on location in Jasper Place High School in Edmonton, AB. This was my first independant film I did with my Film Studies 15 group. A horror-thriller movie about a series of murders at a high school and one man is trying to piece together the story to solve the mystery of the Red Tie.
The Truth About Modern Warfare 3 and the Future for Call of Duty: Ghosts

Given that Call of Duty: Ghosts is steadily approaching and Infinity Ward is back on the scene in full force, I want to do a little introductory video to the lawsuit fiascos between Infinity Ward and Activision over the past four years and my own opinion of Modern Warfare 3 and how I feel about it so far.

Stop Internet Censorship: A Brief History of PIPA and SOPA

As time on Earth went on, land was soon owned and even oceans were taken. There were no longer free ranges owned by no one, but the trees and the rocks. Alas, this does not exist anymore, but new technologies and innovations paved way for a new, open-range world we know today as the internet. By the end of the twentieth century, the internet had become a universal hub for games, movies, videos,...

"first major block buster title" Cossacks exists haha
a few years late, but PLEASE play the trilogy vanilla if you can. Just ZRP installed. The slavic jank is worth it.
Most of my prefered game from remedy or eastern europe. CDproject red and GSC made momerable games
The Stalker community became insufferable with all the pro-NATO and pro-US ass-kissing. Spelling it "Chornobyl" is as cringe as using neutral pronouns. Ukrainians who weren't slaughtered in battle already at this point are the whiny types going around virtue signaling through their pc spelling.
TV brained video
When you discovered and enjoyed STALKER, you were affected a little bit with Slavic soul, that's why this game is so immersive....
I like how you called it eurojank while we in europe call it slavjank😁 It is usually games from the slavic countries that have this kind of jank, and i love it.
Thank you so much for taking such an in-depth look into the historical context behind the game, it is such a crucial part of its identity that is so often overlooked. As someone with a personal connection with the tragedy, I've wondered for years whether using Chornobyl as a setting was a morally correct decision from the developers. However, at its core, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is a game about people surviving among the ruins of an empire, facing an uncertain future, and forging their own identity in the process. The game is by no means some masterful sociopolitical reflection, but it is so good at capturing the air of uncertainty that defined life in Ukraine in the 90s and 00s. And Chornobyl is the perfect symbol for the downfall of the USSR and the traumatic legacy it left Ukraine with: just like the nuclear particles left by the disaster, the lasting effects of repression and colonialism will take many generations to truly decay.
How this video has only 40k completely baffles me
Didn't expect so much support and depth, warms my Ukrainian heart ❤
you are in underground complex emergency light still works and spins seueaking water somwhere drips and echo goes through entire complex something heavy fell/stepped on a catwalk THAT'S immersion and there's not a single mutant there if stalker 2 is made for wide audience that will forget about it in a year then it will be trash the jank has become a core experience of the zone stalker 2 must be exactly like previous trilogy
nice vid bro! sad that Stalker 2 is still not out :( oh well, replaying the trilogy right now! sad about the war, too. Even worse when there was a peace deal on the table months and months ago but the western elites scuttled it to keep the conflict going.
Brilliant video!
You need to make more videos dude. You got talent and you're already far better than most. Just make sure to decrease the bg music volume next time :)
Great video!
Playing the original STALKER at 11 years old was the most emersive, confusing and terrifying gaming experience of my life. While all my friends were stuck on COD 4 Multiplayer I was grinding it out in the Chernobyl exclusion zone not knowing what I was doing and if all this weird stuff is actually happening in that place. It took me more than a year to beat and the feeling of the first playthrough will never be replicated. Such a unique series. I'm so excited for the sequel yet I'm dreading it at the same time. No game could really scratch that ich for me, not even Metro.
Propaganda covered as a stalkwr video i see
You’re an idiot
It wasn't mysterious he embezzled a ton of money and bailed.
Дякую за це відео і за підтримку України
Hmm... Good quality content and so few views/likes? Strange, very strange
Great video, thanks
The video would have turned out quite well if not for the political and pseudo-historical part. The author does not understand what he imposes on others, voicing the template theses of Western propaganda, presenting incomplete information from the wrong angle. I don't blame him for this, because in the so-called "democratic countries" the Western machine of imposing anti-Sovietism, anti-communism and Russophobia copes quite well. But nevertheless, it would be possible to make a video without this part, which is superfluous. I say this being a ukrainian (Slavic, Russian)
You are infinitely underrated my man
Poignant analysis. After this exposé, I am curious about playing it.
CORRECTIONS: 23:13 Audio got cut off here, what I meant to say is "When it comes to the combat..." 25:32 Another abrupt cutoff in the music that lacked a smooth transition.
amazing video! glad i finally got around to watching it and here’s to more space horror to come 🎉
31:32 THIS. This is what so many fans just downright ignored or not realised how difficult it is to come up with a new game without getting called a clone or a rip-off, maybe even taken down for copyrighting. While also finding some level of familiarity that resembles the game they wanted to come back. Whereas Motive has a whole IP and homework/research given to them thanks to the very work done by the original team. And some of these people are the same fans who had completely forgotten the story and setting of Dead Space 2 and how Isaac is picked up by EarthGov. Thinking that the secret ending is the "canonical" ending when Isaac is never suppose to be on the side of the Necromorphs at all, only traumatised and mentally tortured by the ghost of Nicole. Thank you for bringing this unfair fact and the bias Dead Space Remake fans have.
Great job, subscribed !
Another great vid Nic 👌👌, getting better with each one
Very nice video and story
"I was ten years old when I first played CoD 4" Omg I feel old. When I was 10 I was begging my mom to order the full release of Doom and a fuckin SoundBlaster lol.
makes me laugh every time westoids talk about things they dont understand like theyre experts. stay off politics and stick to your silly videogame reviews
Nicholas, Be certain that you have created a very good essay and video. Good directing, great commentary, impacting use of the soundtrack. Yet another jewel by the STALKER fan community. Well done. Well done.
I was playing STALKER in my dark room, and my cousin was sitting next to me. I was going through some basement that was pitch black, exept for my flashlight. It was quiet, and we thought we heard a snork running around in the dark. I was ill-prepared, with a shitty AK-74U and barely any armor, I walked slowly towards the sound, crouching down as I went... The silence was suddenly broken when my little brother (7 yr) had gone into the room through the open door and sneaked up behind us to ask "WhaT aRe yoU plAYing?!" Let me tell you that my soul left my body and I suddenly started shooting everywhere, screaming in unison with my cousin and not seeing where the fuck I was going anymore... Shit was crazy
Your cousin is a future internet troll 😂
I remember when I was 11 years old and Shadow of Chernobyl came out. It was a love at first sight, I never played a game like this before. The head bob and weapon sway felt so real and immersive. Even shooting a 12 gauge gave a pleasurable feedback. I accidentally shot someone in the Sid's village and the whole camp went hostile. I barely put half of them down and got killed. At this very moment, I realized, this game is no walk in the park. Unlike most games, Stalker does not hold you by the hand throughout the whole game. It feels like you've been thrown into the lake not knowing to swim. When I got to the first underground level in Research Institute and encountered a Controller for the first time, I shit my pants and uninstalled the game. I thought I am done with it for good. Again, I was 11yo. Didn't I know they'd release a sequel year later, Clear Sky which made me give it another chance. I finished the first game and then the sequel and I loved every bit of it. Call of Pripyat was just a cherry on top. Modding community and a loyal player base has done wonders for this franchise and there has not been a single years since 2007 in which I did not play Stalker. I can without a doubt say that Stalker is the best game ever made... for the right audience. Nothing ever beats it. Anomaly and its branches are total pinnacle. Can't wait what modding community will do with an upcoming Heart of Chornobyl.
What a great video man.
Thank you for your support. I am staying in Kiev and playing now in Stalker, if have electricity
Anomaly is the most fun I've ever had in a single player shooter.
Hilarious that everyone is all about Ukraine this, Ukraine that without realizing that Russia and Ukraine have been at war for almost 2 decades and the Ukraine has violated the cease fire agreements like 2 times at least lol Sure shows how people who play video games all day and get all their info from pop culture are retarded as fuck.
Ukrainian Stalker’s here!🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦💪🏻
Played it for the first time in 2010 Been hooked ever since I'm glad people are finally starting to notice this game
5:10 🙄 bye
the music is a bit too loud in this video
Wish I could've finished this video but you totally lost me around 5:15 when you go on your little BS rant about Ukraine. Thumbs down.
Nobody is immune to propaganda And it's one hell of a drug
Came for the analysis, stayed for the history lesson. Amazing work!
A friend of mine just got me into the stalker series and its some of the best ive played
O-Consuisness have heard you.
Your conclusions on The Fall are incorrect.
immersion ? S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is everything but immersive unless you mean immersive into boredom and empty openworld
As a Ukrainian, thank you, and as fan of Stalker - thank you, im glad you didn't "forgot" about bugs, even if in this kind of videos i always feel like the reviewer get the most bugged version while i get last, you told about them fairly (and maybe even somewhat underestimated them). Anyway, again i want to say thank you, and also sorry for my bad English.
