To feel balanced and mature, we need to integrate these traits. Thank you once again for a helpful video! I certainly can be co-dependent with my adhd gf and I’m trying to get better at it. Do you have any videos/could you do one on hyperfocus in the beginning of a relationship with an ADHd partner? In the beginning of mine, I was the center of attention for her non stop and since it’s an ldr, we’d spend hours on the phone/vid chat. Now after a couple of years (and we’ve met numerous times with a future together), I feel like that I’m just an after thought and I’m no longer the dopamine hit I once was for her. This also goes for intimacy issues as well. I now feel unwanted even though we do talk but not as much, there’s no playfulness, etc. Thank you.

    Thank you for doing this video per my comments I had with you last week. This really helped me understand things. The parent-child dynamic for the adhd partner and non adhd partner can be taxing. Sometimes due to their time blindness. With my adhd partner, she also has quiet borderline personality disorder, which upon my research, can coincide with ADHD (and have similiar symptoms). This can make things more difficult with the relationship sometimes. I know however that both these mental health issue slides t define my gf. She’s amazing and I love her so much.

    Thank you for this live. It was quite helpful in considering my gf has ADHD. I do tend to be a “fixer” for her which can be overwhelming for me. I sometimes try my best not to be one (which can be difficult as I have very high empathy). With that said however, she now has to deal with chronic pancreatitis also. That in turn makes me realise I have to help her.

Glad to hear that you are beginning to be aware of this process. Let me know what is the moment/part that is particularly challenging for you and I can speak more on that.

      @ thank you for replying. Well the part is me trying to make phone calls for her/advocate for her. I’m trying to tell myself: “why? She must have done all this herself before she met me.” Recently I’ve been trying to get her to do her own stuff as I think she was getting used to me being her fixer and not have a second thought on it. The only time I would do things however, is if she needs something done, but can’t due to her ongoing pain.

I did this once, but after this first time, I had other things to seek thrills, you talked about this teenager thing, well yes, actually when you said that, I was flabbergasted :o it made "me" ruin our relationship, but on the other part there was some toxic stuff always coming up from my partner too

      Hi, I have been attending System-Centered group therapy trainings since 2008. I attend this monthly professional training to be a better group leader. This group uses a specific technique called functioning subgrouping to integrate differences and to promote personal transformation. When a group is set up well and members are learning how to communicate in a compassionate and effective way, the power of the group can surpasses individual therapy. So part of the fee of the group goes to this type of professional trainings, other goes to my business operation, like licensing fee, professional insurance, etc. The average cost of an individual therapy session in the bay area is $200 per 50 min, so $800 or so per month for weekly sessions. I want to offer this group as an alternative for the non-ADHD partner for healing and growth as it is $300 for 3 hours per month. Many of my couples clients are spending over $1000 per month for couples therapy and ADHD treatment for the ADHD partner, leaving little funds for the non-ADHD partner to pursue therapeutic support. I hope this answers your question.

      Also, I typed in "why group therapy is more beneficial than individual therapy" in openAI, here is the outcome: Group therapy can offer several unique benefits compared to individual therapy: Shared Experiences: Participants often find comfort in hearing others share similar struggles, which can reduce feelings of isolation and foster a sense of belonging. Multiple Perspectives: Group members can provide diverse viewpoints on issues, helping individuals see their challenges in new ways and explore different coping strategies. Social Skills Development: Group settings provide a safe space to practice interpersonal skills, improve communication, and build relationships, which can be particularly helpful for those with social anxiety. Support and Accountability: Group members can offer mutual support and encouragement, creating a sense of accountability that can motivate individuals to stick with their goals. Cost-Effectiveness: Group therapy is often more affordable than individual sessions, making mental health support more accessible. Facilitated Learning: A trained therapist can guide discussions, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to contribute and learn from each other. Real-Time Feedback: Members can receive immediate feedback on their thoughts and behaviors from peers, which can enhance self-awareness and personal growth. While individual therapy has its own advantages, such as tailored focus and privacy, group therapy can be particularly beneficial for those looking to connect with others and gain insights through shared experiences.

    Hi thank you for providing insights of the adhd partner during conflict. My adhd partner and I recently had a disagreement because I have tried to communicate with him that I feel neglected He has a child with from his last relationship and he admitted to his struggle with letting go of the guilt from the separation. He is quick to go into defensive mode and shuts down whenever I try to address my frustrations of feeling like an afterthought like my needs don’t matter It would be great if you could provide ideas on how to approach these types of situations

      Thank you for your great question! It is a very common dynamic when one partner seeks connection and mutual understanding and the other feels attacked then gets defensive. After I finish my series on ADHD and Infidelity, I will do a video on this dynamic. Stay tuned!

    This is 100% accurate. You are the only one I've seen who has talked about this possibility. I was diagnosed with ADHD at 33 and I have these exact emotional struggles and I always have trouble putting my finger on the cause. I recently learned about attachment theory and am sure I am a "dismissive avoidant" type because the same issues people like me experience are synonomous with that type of attachment style. However, it NEVER occured to me until this video that the symptoms and behavior I am attributing to my attachment style may just be as a result of my ADHD? I wonder if there is any data around attachment theory and ADHD and if ADHD can just predispose a person to a Dismissive Avoidant attachment style regardless of the dynamics of their upbringing??

      Hi, thank you for being vulnerable and sharing your own experience here. The acceptance of the self is the beginning of change, Kudos to you! My experience and understanding is that ADHD is a neurological condition, that is highly inheritable, which means you can be born with an ADHD/ neurodivergent brain. While attachment style tends to be formed in relationships with others. The first relationship an infant has is with the caregivers. One can have different attachments with different caregivers. My video here is to name a possibility that one has an ADHD brain (with avoidance tendencies for certain tasks) and happens to have developed an anxious avoidant attachment style with their loved one(s). I have clients who are diagnosed with ADHD but have anxious preoccupied attachment with their partner. Hope this helps.

    What about secure attachment and insecure attachment disorder?

    • @yizhaomartinslmft5631
      @yizhaomartinslmft5631 Рік тому

      Thank you for your question. Let me try to understand your question. Are you asking if one partner has a secure attachment style and the other has insecure attachment style, how does it show up in ADHD-impacted relationship? Insecure attachment styles are anxious-avoidant, preoccupied insecure, and disorganized attachment style. One can develop different attachment styles with different people, e.g: one can be securely attached to father and anxious-avoidant with mother. One can be avoidant in one romantic relationship and preoccupied in another romantic relationship. It is not a disorder, in my opinion, it is a dynamic that can be looked at. I love the idea of focus on self when you notice the frustration but how do the dishes get done? how do the kids get picked up? I have tried to do this with the dishes and I noticed that what I need in the moment is for the dishes to be done and I don't want to remind him so I go ahead and start to do them. Then he comes in exasperated saying he was going to do it and I can tell he feels bad that he put it off..

      Thank you for your comment. It seems that you and your partner may have different speed in completing house chores. I do not know him, but I see lots of clients with ADHD procrastinate tasks that they are not excited about. If two have you have different expectations that when this "chore" gets done and you are the one wants it done earlier and has less tolerance for the "unfinished mess", then it makes sense that you end up get it done before he gets to it. This is part of the "dance". He "fails" to meet the expectation that you have, you get frustrated and maybe resentful? he feels guilty and maybe withdrawal? I do not know the two of you so I am making lots of assumptions. If you are curious about how this dance plays out in your relationship and wants to explore more, feel free to reach out for a free consultation on my website: www.yizhaomartins.com
