    My heart is just breaking. I adopted a 12 week old rescue last may (he just turned a year) and we fell in love with how he was at the shelter. He just laid there, was to scared to walk with us, seemed so sad and we thought this isn’t the place for him he needs a great home and we can give him that. We had to carry him out of there and he just slept in my arms. Starting at 12 weeks to about 6 months we had multiple instances where he snapped at people. We have since spent thousands on trainings, a trainer tell us to behaviorally euthanize him, another trainer that I don’t agree with their approach but we are seeing progress. I am just so so sad for him. He was never like theses puppies and it’s lead to issues. He loves other dogs so when we decide to get another, knowing what to look for to be his buddy is so helpful. We are thinking a female to help ease some of his stress that is confident.

      I am sorry to hear about your first pup. I wish you the best if and when you have another. I recommend looking at a Veterinary Behaviorist for your current pup, and working with a Fear Free CPDT trainer.

      Make sure he is neutered and make sure you spay/neuter your new dog. There could be something medically wrong with him. Do not go to a trainer that harms the dog or inflicts pain or fear. Usually aggression comes from fear and anxiety, those trainers will make it worse. I recommend doing Petsmart training, if he is good with other dogs do the group training. You should get him a baskerville muzzle though and train him to use it before you go. All dogs should be used to wearing a muzzle for their safety and our safety. My 1st and 2nd service dog were trained to wear a muzzle, they never had any sort of behavioral issues, but it was a good thing to have on hand incase of an emergency if they were hurt or something. Make sure you do positive reinforcement training, do not go to a trainer that yells at dogs. Find a good patient trainer that will take the time to bond with the dog before training even starts. You can't train a dog if the dog doesn't trust you. You might try CBD or pheromones to calm him down.

    While this is a cute video, you don't say anything about which temperament you are looking for, and pros and cons of each behavior, and suitability of each type of behavior for a service dog. I will be looking for a puppy to train as a service dog and need to know more before I'm ready.

    • @campivy3438

      Correct. This is just me, a stranger to the puppies, running them through situations to get a snapshot of a moment in time for the puppy during their development... They can certainly change as they grow which depends on training, environment, and more! I did not include pros or cons because again it is a snapshot and not a sentence - a puppy may be concerned about the umbrella one day and see a trash can fall another day and not be worried, however if you only rely on the tests then the puppy unphased would be better. I recommend you work with a Fear Free CPDT-KA trainer as they can run through that with you individually for any pups you are interested in considering. It would also be a good idea to view Puppy Culture as well. Best of luck in your search!

    I'm sorry, im trying to learn more about puppy culture. The breeder we are going with stated that they train using puppy culture and i want to continue that training when the pup is born and old enough to come home...so its time for homework. I dont really understand how this is a test and what makes them "pass"

    Temperamental tests are supposed to help find the right pup.I talk to German shepherd trainer and he told me to avoid the shy fearful puppy, because it might be hardwired in the genes and it is hard to overcome. If it is not genetic then there is still no guarantee they will outgrow it, he also told me an investigative puppy will remain that way. I always think that with help they can change

    • @campivy3438
      @campivy3438 4 роки тому

      That's not necessarily true. This is just a snapshot in time of their development. I highly recommend watching Puppy Culture and reading about Socialization methods by professionals like the late Sophia Yin. However, overall I prefer they not be in a state of extreme shyness when entering a new home - too overwhelming for them.

    When I temperate tested my puppy he wasn’t that young but he didn’t know how to fetch so that was the only one he really failed but I didn’t get him to necessarily be a sd so it didn’t matter to me that much

    • @campivy3438
      @campivy3438 4 роки тому

      They didn't know it... it just tests if it's an innate skill and it's only a snapshot of a moment... that same puppy in two weeks could not do it, or one who didn't could - just a moment in time in their development with comfort levels and a naturally offered response.

  • @agentscullly
    @agentscullly 5 років тому

    So when testing for service dog temperament is it better for the puppy to ignore the umbrella or to check it out?

    • @campivy3438
      @campivy3438 5 років тому

      There is no better or worse, it is just an idea of where they are at in that moment of their development. If they run or hide from it, they are fearful in that moment. If they ignore it, they are not phased. If they check it out, they are confident and curious in that moment... It is simply feedback :-) For a dog who will work as a service dog, you would not want them to be fearful, but again some confident puppies can suddenly be fearful in just a moment. I highly recommend watching Puppy Culture by Jane Killion to learn more!

    • @campivy3438
      @campivy3438 6 років тому

      Hi Ricky, the assessment is only a snapshot of a moment in time for the puppy during their development... This means they can certainly change as they grow which depends on training, environment, and more! Also the assessment helps us consider which house might be the best placement for the pup and the family they go to... So a house in need of a service dog would do better with a pup that scores certain things on an assessment vs a family who wants a companion. Does that makes sense? Basically, they are all cute and winners! <3 hah!

      @@Nonbinarymodel "small" is relative. My dog is a Golden and I rescued her while living in Korea. They breed them smaller there (American Goldens are huge!!), and she is 45-50lbs. In Korea, she was considered a MASSIVE dog, and many people who didn't know her were initially scared because of her size... most dogs over 10lbs were thought of as big.

    Nice looking puppies. Puppy number 5 was itching his collar which he still isn't use to. That was not a response to the umbrella. Also the raise off ground test, should be done keeping the puppies parallel to the ground, not head up. The parents were obviously pretty calm.

    • @campivy3438
      @campivy3438 6 років тому

      The puppies were raised with Puppy Culture and had mellow parents. They had been accustomed to collars for some time. Suzanne Clothier's CARAT requires the head to be up and uses a number of positions. Thanks for your comments and viewing the video!

    • @Bwanar1
      @Bwanar1 6 років тому

      Your Welcome. Thanks for your response. Sorry, I was not aware of Suzanne's methods and that it was being used & scored differently. She uses a variation of the tests we have used for 30-40 yrs. I stand corrected as long as their is enough data behind changes in the tests, for a fair sampling assessment. However, I stand behind my call on the collar itch. I've been raising Labs for over 40yrs. My current pup is almost 10wks old (has been wearing some sort of ribbon/collar since birth and still scratches at it occasionally "exactly" like that one. Seen it many times over the years, never an umbrella in sight! ;-) That puppy spun that collar all the way around it's neck. And I bet you a dollar to a doughnut you'll never see that response again! Which would make it kinda hard to rate/access, wouldn't you say?

    • @campivy3438
      @campivy3438 6 років тому

      Well keep in mind the assessment is only a moment in time for the puppy during their development anyway. Yes, I do think it was an itch. It possibly extended to displacement behavior since he wandered off, or was just itchy and didn't mind the new element in the environment.
