Faunal 3 Interpretation
What can we learn from faunal analysis at archaeological sites? Primarily we want to know what meats people were eating. But we may also examine what technologies were used in conjunction with animals, whether domestication occurred, reconstruct the paleoecology of the area or determine what habitats were targeted, and discern the seasons the site was occupied or trash was deposited.

Faunal 2 Data
Переглядів 1,2 тис.4 роки тому
Learn about the basic descriptive data that faunal analysts collect, and what secondary data they subsequently report. Basic data covered include identification; recording butchering, pathologies, and other modifications; age and sex; and quantification and measurements. Findings may be reported as NISP, MNI, Biomass, Body part quantification, and measures of dietary width and diversity. See al...
Faunal 1 Basics
Переглядів 1,8 тис.4 роки тому
An introduction to faunal analysis in archaeology or zooarchaeology: faunal analysts identify bones and make interpretations of assemblages. What bones are available for identification depend on their density, taphonomic factors, and steps taken by the archaeologist to recover the full range of faunal remains. This video introduces taphonomic factors.
Flake Attributes and Debitage Analysis
Переглядів 4,9 тис.4 роки тому
Brief descriptions of flake attributes are followed by a survey of various common debitage analyses.
Tools solutions and Why Lithic Analysis
Переглядів 1,6 тис.4 роки тому
In the first part of this presentation, I point out that how a tool looks and how it is made is influenced by the solutions to three common problems: function, raw material, and social expectations or standards. In the second part of the presentation I list the different sorts of analyses that a lithic analyst may perform, and what information may be contributed to an archaeological project.
Lithics: Formal Tool Analysis

Переглядів 5124 роки тому
Gail Wagner talks about the chronological sequence of domesticated small-seeded annuals found archaeologically in eastern North America.
Domestication of Small-Seeded Plants
Переглядів 5904 роки тому
Gail Wagner explains the differences between domesticated plants, weeds, and wild plants, and talks about how domestication may have come about through the inadvertent actions of humans being human and weeds being weeds, and why semi-mobile Archaic peoples in the eastern United States were particularly well suited for this fortuitous sequence.
Flotation Recovery Systems
Переглядів 1,6 тис.4 роки тому
In this video Gail Wagner (University of South Carolina-Columbia) talks about hand-flotation versus machine-assisted flotation systems by taking you on a more-or-less chronological journey through some of the flotation systems she set up or used over a 44-year period, from the mid-1970s to 2020.

Very informative, thank you. You only featured uniface tools as scrapers. I live in the BBNP area of Texas and have found many uniface points as well as scrapers. I don't know if these people were here waaay earlier than thought or if they were just "cut off" from other, newer, biface technologies for thousands of years.

It is made by a Chickasaw artist called Joanna Underwood. If you search "Pottery Drawn to Chickasaw History" (or her name) on Google or similar you should be able to find this piece. I think the pattern just represents either water or air, I don't know if it has a name.

It is appointed unto men once to die, and after this cometh judgment; Hebrews 9:27 RV But God commendeth his own love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 RV For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have eternal life. John 3:16 RV Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Acts 2:38 RV Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. John 3:5 RV For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. Romans 8:14 RV He that believeth on the Son hath eternal life; but he that obeyeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him. John 3:36 RV Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. Galatians 6:7 RV For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more a sacrifice for sins, Hebrews 10:26 RV Enter ye in by the narrow gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many be they that enter in thereby. For narrow is the gate, and straitened the way, that leadeth unto life, and few be they that find it. Matthew 7:13-14 RV Things which eye saw not, and ear heard not, And which entered not into the heart of man, Whatsoever things God prepared for them that love him. 1 Corinthians 2:9 RV

Thank you for this video! I recently got a job doing professional archeology after about 6 years out of the field, and before that I somehow managed to get a degree without learning a damn thing about lithics. This is very helpful in catching up!

Melons are non-migratory perhaps it was brought by African swallows. How would they grasp it? Possibly strung on a vine held by two swallows by their dorsal guidance feathers. Not a problem of how they grasped it, but a matter of weight to air speed velocity. Possibly just a seed vs. a whole melon. LOL ignore just imagining Monty Python players watching this.

If you're interested in knapping with natural materials, I've made a few videos. You can also do a search for "abo" or "aboriginal" knapping.
