    Best piece of advice every military member has for people looking to become a service member is to do more research, go with the plan that’s best for your life and situation, talk to all the branches/ sign up to get more info via each of their websites to get paired with a recruiter near you, they all have basically the same benefits, they all have different environments and missions, nothing is set in stone unless it’s in writing

    A warning to those thinking of signing up for the Air Guard (or Reserves) from a Guard/Reserve veteran....if you don't get presidentially activated or do long term AGR duty you won't have ANY veterans benefits at ALL. ZERO. You won't legally be a veteran without this unless you are service-disabled through the DOD or VA. On top of this, if you do get injured, Guard and Reserve do NOT have Presumption of Soundness or Presumption of Aggravation for VA claims as active duty vets have. There is also a higher standard of documentation required to prove service connection compared to active duty members. To make matters worse, the VA and the DOD will fight you tooth and nail to get service-connected no matter how much in-service medical evidence you have. I actually believe in the Guard/Reserve concept for the security of our country. But until people force Congress to change these horrible and unfair laws for Guard/Reserves by not signing up, it will keep happening. You have been WARNED. -John

    • @TeighanKochOfficial
      @TeighanKochOfficial 3 місяці тому

      How common are presidential orders or availability of these orders to get these benefits? How long do you have to serve active duty orders before the government considered you a veteran? Thanks in advance!

    • @JohnB-dr8sk
      @JohnB-dr8sk 3 місяці тому

      @@TeighanKochOfficial No problem! During the Iraq/Afghanistan War on Terror, it was very common for the Guard and Reserve to get activated. Even just being activated one day qualifies you as an active duty veteran with VA benefits. I served during the Desert Storm/1st Gulf War era, and it was very difficult to get activated/deployed even if you volunteered for it. Now that the War on Terror is over, it's still possible to get activated, but it's much harder now. Regarding AGR, you have to do 24 months and then the VA will consider you a veteran. In my case, I got service-disabled and granted veteran status. But I will tell anyone that they don't want that route as it is a lifetime of suffering and not glamorous at all despite the benefits. I'd give all my benefits up to be healthy and normal again. Getting back to getting veteran status in the Guard/Reserve, I would make 100% sure that the unit you are signing up for has AGR slots open in the MOS you pick before signing the dotted line. In fact, I would ask that unit's commander to guarantee an AGR slot upon enlisting if you meet the requirements. Otherwise, you will serve for 3 years, get out and have ZERO benefits and not be able to legally call yourself a veteran. Yes, 6 years gets you a home loan through the VA, but that is not the same thing as getting VA Health Benefits, VA Hardship Benefits (SSVF Program), Federal and State Hiring Points, VA Health ID showing real veteran status, etc. Most states will also not consider you a veteran unless the VA says you are, so you will also not be able to get veteran benefits through your state as well (check this before signing as well, because some states DO grant benefits and consider you a veteran if you serve in that State's National Guard). Honestly, I would just sign up and serve a 3 year active duty enlistment and THEN join the Guard or Reserve. That way you will be covered as a veteran but also have the ability to serve part time afterwards and never have to worry about chasing down an AGR slot, etc to get veteran status.

      @@JohnB-dr8skI'm trying to tell my little cousin all of this. He's considering joining the military, and from what I've heard from all the people in all of the branches, the best route is to enlist once as a full-time soldier into an MOS that has civilian relevant skills, then get out, get your education, and join your local Guard unit if you want to stay in, ideally as an officer through whatever route you want to take to be an officer. This is assuming you're a normal person and not one of the Jocko Willink's of the world. I personally haven't served. I did a year of Air Force ROTC before realizing I valued my civilian career too much to join the Air Force for a full time officer contract that would last four years before I'd even begin getting the professional certification for my civilian career. Now that I've finished up my degree, I'm considering signing up for Air Force OCS to directly commission into my state Air National Guard in the position I would want, now that I have a much better idea of what I want to do with my life than I did at 18. Had I known what I know now, I would have enlisted in the Air National Guard and done that while I got my education.

    Greetings Sir from Fayetteville, NC. My name is Leontii Popov and yes indeed i really enjoyed your discussion of things what to do before joining ANG. Or as known by Air National Guard. I’m 20 years old and I’ll be 21 on April 7th this year. I have few things to ask as questions in this comment section. 1. Where can I find a video of how basic military training looks like for Air National Guard? 2. Is there any positions I can find for air national guard involving in business/logistics? Since I work in a small business veteran logistics company as a lead customer service position for 5 years since September 2019. 3. Another question I have is that the BMT is 8.5 weeks training? Or 7 weeks training? Since one source says 7 weeks of BMT and other source says 8.5 weeks. 4. I’ve also graduated from Jack Britt High School class of 2022 and I’ve attended marching band between 2018-2022 years. And in fall 2021 as a section leader for saxophones during my senior year. In addition to this 4th question; Do they have a great band program?

    Questions. 1. FOMO on family. Although ANG is part time with more civilian lifestyles, do you recommend it for someone with children? Would non combat mos still have occurring deployments? Or long deployments My fear is missing out on my children while their young due to random long deployments. 2. Calling home is a privilege in the guard, but how often are you able to call home during deployments if any? 3. How often are deployments? Both state and federal and worldwide? 4. Is six years the minimum on contracts or is there a smaller contract available?

    • @aveontaefrazier

      I don’t see you being a parent as a barrier, there are plenty of individuals who join in that situation. If you are deployed you will be able to reach out as much as you want with your personal time.

If I’m joining the Air National Guard, and want to go back to college, does my degree have to be something related to my job in the ANG? For ex: I want to do Medical Material in the ANG, but I’ve also been interested in pursuing a degree with something to do in sports as a side thing to further create more opportunities, would i be able to do that? 2. After boot camp, when you show up for drills, do you HAVE to keep your head shaved since you’re part time only for the military? I’ve been getting mixed responses on that. 3. If I plan on doing ANG, then college, while also a part time regular job on the side, do you think that would be possible if I were to manage my time correctly? 4. Can I go to an Air Force recruiter for more info? Or do I have to go to an Air National Guard recruiter for more info?
