Lucy U/S: Whitney Allen. Matinee Jekyll/Hyde: Joe Mahowald RARE recording.
ope this is mine now! replacing my broadway official dvd with this
I really like this Lucy too, she's very talented and has this kind of world-weary melancholy vibe that makes me really feel for the character, unlike other versions I've seen where she seems more naïve and simply characterised. I'd feel very lucky if I saw this cast live over all the bigger stunt casting names!
Wow this guy is the understudy and he's miles better than Hasselhoff or Bach! It just feels so effortless and he's amazing at playing the two parts and can actually act with his singing voice! Excellent Confrontation! It's really not fair that big names get favoured over actual talent that elevates the material :/
REALLL i hate hasselhoff with a passion and love bach as much as the next guy but hes so much better
@samdandy6812 ikr I could barely watch the hasselhoff version I was cringing so hard, Bach is definitely a great singer but not an actor. This guy is amazing, he deserved to be the lead more than all these guys that get the role just for their name recognition!
It's so interesting to see how many variations of the cast there are for this play, and all of them bring something fresh and fun to the table.
What a FANTASTIC treat! Excellent performance, Whitney!
This recording is such a gift. I absolutely adore this Lucy understudy, especially the emotion she puts into "A New Life". She sounds really great with Andrea Rivette, too. Also, this Jekyll/Hyde is one of the best I've seen, and I've listened to every soundtrack and watched pretty much every production on UA-cam. I really like his body language, especially as Hyde. Seriously an impressive cast, can't believe these two were understudies.
i agree she sounds so good with andrea! yes this whole cast is the bomb 🥹🥰🥰🖤
THANK YOU. I was always such a wreck going on for Coleen but I remember feeling so at ease when I got to go on with Joe. This was a special day, I',m so glad someone taped it.
In his eyes is such a pretty song. It has always been my favourite song but I think this version is my favourite. Both voices go together really nicely. Such a lovely song to listen to.
🥰
Probably two of the best understudies I've seen.
Wow, Joe really sold “This is the Moment.” Well done! Other than Warlow, this is the first time I actually liked this song. ETA: And his “Confrontation” was the best I’ve ever seen. 😮
1:57:35 for those looking for The Confrontation
OmG I am so excited that I found this
Whitney! You are AMAZING! I’m so glad this exists ❤️
Thanks Hon!!!
I’m confused is that Colleen? Is she sick??? I saw her sing these songs on at least a half dozen occasions and never did she sound like this before 😳
nope! Thats me as Lucy (read the caption). That's okay, my skin is thicker now than it was back then and your comment about my singing doesn't hurt as much as it once would have. (still hurts a little, though). I was also the swing for the entire female cast and the Emma U/S as well. Emma was more in my vocal range than Lucy, for sure. After this show I quit broadway and left NYC because I was so shaken with doubt that I was meant to perform for a living. Being in J&H really messed with the confidence of the female leads and understudies, many of us came away from that show doubting ourselves... ask Andrea, ask Coleen. It was messed up. Unless you were Linda, of course! She could do no wrong... her voice is very, very unique and her range is like no one else's. Her keys were super tough to sing in.
@@yourfriendwhit I think you sounded amazing!
@@yourfriendwhityou did a great job! I keep replaying your version of A New Life, you really performed it so well ☺️
A Russian version, for comparison (Saint Petersburg Theater of Musical Comedy; with English subtitles): ua-cam.com/play/PLDIarktnxUGjEw9ABn4ZfLV8seafIx9Uy.html

Isn't that just a blank screen?
I was fortunate enough to see this cast on Broadway. It was incredible - one of my favorite shows!
Mine too!
Hey OP- I asked already about a few months back & you’re yet to respond… but I mean, I don’t even know if u even *check* this account anymore 🙈😩 I don’t want to offload this video without your permission (I would credit this channel in the description)
Please do! Sorry I missed the question-- I've had a crazy few months.
Wow I worked on this show and even I have never heard of these understudies 😮 I was in attendance for at least 6 shows (plus opening and closing nights/after parties) as well as for the ridiculous amounts of reshoots done every time a new Jekyll was cast (which was part of the campaign and why the show lasted as long as it did) Hey OP - I have a lot of full length recordings of this show from the pre Broadway tour onward - I have only uploaded about 5 or 6 versions so far; in order to gage the interest. I would really love to upload this to my channel (do check it out❣️and , of course, I would credit you however you may wish 🖤) but I wouldn’t ever offload and reload it without permission
I loved the pre broadway tour so much! I saw it in Seattle! I also like the tour version I did with Chuck Wagner! Did you get any recordings of that?
Please feel free to share it on your channel!
Please send anything of me if you have it!!!! I don't mean to sound narcissistic but I don't have many vids of my work!!!
Do you have full recordings with Jack Wagner or Sebastian Bach as Jekyll/Hyde?
OKAY SO OUT OF THE CONFRONTATIONS IVE SEEN SO FAR THAT WAS MY FAVORITE OMG!!! THAT WAS AWESOME!!!
the memories.. :( ♾
Agreed
whoa i didnt realize this was the full musical when i clicked! i'm in for a treat
excellent camerawork. thank you for choosing to record, im blessed to have seen this beautiful performance that was a moment in time i wouldn't otherwise have seen :0
after watching a few renditions i think this is my favorite version of the musical here on youtube along with the 1995 pre-broadway recording ua-cam.com/video/LRfov1AQs-I/v-deo.htmlsi=rAhOySioHZpToRfY this one is so good but i wish they hadn't strayed from the original lyrics it feels a bit rushed. and there's a certain amount of fabricated feeling that comes the more 'showbizzed' it gets.. although the actors did very well and passionate in spite of that aspect here. another thing is the lights flashing/hair flip on top of the fast voice switches i feel like makes it harder for the actor to simply focus on the character change... i am a bit of a perfectionist though.. it is wonderful production. everyone working so hard in sync, i find myself mesmerized lol
this is my favorite recording it was my first introduction into this stage production after hearing the gothic thriller album when i was 16 a few years ago, second only in my heart to the 1995 pre broadway tour recording... honorable mention to the Alley Theatre 1990 audio recording... that captures the real raw essence of the story and the 1986 & 87 demos for lore!
Can't stop playing In His Eyes. WOW.
That is my second favorite song from this show. Confrontation is my favorite song from any musical.
It was always a fun challenge!
Same. I have always loved the song. But this version has to be my favourite.
@@darkflower444 mine too! Lololol
Andrea Rivette is absolutely phenomenal. And Whitney as the U/S is amazing as well.
Thank you so much! I loved this show and getting to play Emma was a dream. I loved singing with Whitney!
Was this while Rob Evan was Jekyll/Hyde? I know that this is an understudy I’m just curious for the time this was around for the show.
Rob was the matinee alternate during Jack Wagner's and David Hasselhoff's run in 2000-- but when this video was shot, Joe Mahowald was the alternate:: doing the matinees for Sebastian Bach.
Actually Joe was my alternate during my run after taking over for Bob. I left and Wagner replaced me. I came back during Hasselhoff for matinees.
@@robevan8719omg the Rob Evan himself !! I saw Rob as Jekyll/Hyde and also when he understudied as Chauvlin and thought u were better than Terrence Mann. And my friend Lindsay brought me backstage to meet you. There is a picture somewhere 🥲. The memories 🫶🫶
@@robevan8719 you were a dream!
@@whitneyallenwhitka I'd be so glad if I booked to see J+H, later realised it was Sebastian Bach, but I got Mahowald instead. I'd consider it an improvement!
I don't know why these two were just understudies. This is probably my favorite Lucy ever. Strong vocals, phenomenal acting!
sadly, that is show bizz . I've done many shows where the understudies were better than the lead. it's unfair why I don't really do musicals anymore the favoritism is unbearable.
A lot of the time the US's are better or at least equal. Sometimes it is name recognition that determines who the lead is. The bigger the name the more tickets get sold. The original Broadway cast with Robert C and Linda E was awesome. I know someone who saw the very first production in Houston. Chuck, not Jack, Wagner played the lead. Chuck has done a lot on Broadway and I have no doubt was totally awesome. I know I guy who is currently playing the lead in San Antonio. It is a two week run at Fort San Houston. I hope to go before it closes. My wife and son went tonight. Oh, but definitely this US cast was awesome. I still slightly prefer Robert C but it's close. This is said to be one of the hardest leading roles ever.
She was incredible but also a beautiful human being off stage. Love this lady =) xoxo, Whit
and I love YOU. How fun is it to have a recording of us and with Joe. Thank God for whoever recorded this! @@singerAR0406
@@whitneyallenwhitka I know. I treasure this recording =)
This has the best version of confrontation I have ever heard fr
Hi Whitney! I wanted to comment and say that last night, my best friend and I (she's a cinephile and I'm an aspiring actor!) watched 33 different versions of "Dangerous Game" from Jekyll and Hyde (to obsess, compare, enjoy) and yours, featured in the rare recording you've posted with Joseph Mahowald, was BY FARRRR our favorite. You two had such amazing chemistry, made incredibly nuanced acting choices, and were nothing short of electric! We must have watched your version of the song 20+ times last night, pausing it every few seconds sometimes, watching it at half speed, and watching it on mute in order to deconstruct and analyze and fawn over the acting choices you both made!! Thank you so much for uploading the video, I had previously only watched the filmed recordings with Rob Evans, Linda Eder, Robert Cuccioli, Coleen Sexton, and so on (all of whom I adore). Last night we watched all of the different language versions on youtube, all of the filmed broadway/television performances, and all of the highschool and college versions, only to find ourselves absolutely craving and in love with the one you'd posted. Thank you for this gem!! My friend and I both so hope that you are doing well :)
Wow what a flattering and delightful comment to read! Thank you!! I was always so nervous going on as Lucy ad that role was so hard to sing. Joe was my favorite Jekyll and longtime friend, and we rarely got to perform together-- I think it was 2 times in the whole year that we both did the show. any amazingness on my part comes from being onstage with Joe, who is an incredible singer and was such a wonderful friend/costar/teammate. As a performer, it's so much easier when you don't have to be out there by yourself in a solo, singing to a bunch of blurry faces/white seat row lights. Having a great scene partner is what creates the real magic. Thanks again for your kind words. I opened up the comments section on that video, I didn't realize it was closed! Thanks for writing me here. Best of luck with your endeavors!
Who were those guys in the painting behind Allison and John?
Oh wow-- I can't tell who that was. I know Brent used freshmen but I can't remember who, and the video was not good enough quality to tell...
Thank you for uploading this!! I really enjoyed watching it : D
This is amazing.
Beautiful!
