How to Adjust Valves on a Small/Big Block Chevy! Hydraulic Lifters method.
This method works for any engine with hydraulic lifters. Solid lifters takes a longer process.

I have a 1973 Chevy Nova 350. I bought aluminum heads after market hyperforming.Exhaust.I'm picking out a cam right now. Engine casing# 8956618 Google lol says it's actually a 3956618 Which is a 1969 Chevy camaro or Chevy corvette 300 hundred horsepower motor? They say that they also put it in the 1973 chevy nova? I installed the Holly Sniper EFI 😢 and it runs like shit. Timing? Fuel pressure? I'm 57 years old, and fckn want to do a shit ton of burn 🔥 outs before I'm 6 feet under. I'm in California near Edwards.Air Force base Willow Springs raceway.Mojave, you know anybody out here?I need help
If someone trys this method and it doesn't work then try .024 on intake and .026 on exhaust with a feeler guage. As soon as I did that it fired right up.
Hi what motor mounts did you use? I am going to be do the same to my 73. I was told to get the 69-72 BBC nova motor mounts 🤔
I ordered those but I think I got sent the wrong ones. Not sure but they didn’t fit. I have sbc clamshell mounts but it is impossible to get a header under the car on the drivers side. I have forward facing headers now.
good job but to be definitively efficient, you should put grease everywhere. grease et the only thing very efficient against rust. put grease between metal and carpet, inside door, behind metallic bumper, under the vehicle, behind the repairs you can make (everywhere inside the body - hidden erea - instead of using paint), hollow areas (necessarily hidden, so no need to be aesthetic). For rear wings unreachable with a paintbrush, use an extender and poor old oil everywhere each year.Handyman Experience - 35 years. From france
I got same set up as you can't get 3 of the caps to screw on at all rocker is flush wit stud
Are you sure everything is sitting right? Pushrod in its spot? Is the flat side of the center piece of the rocker facing up?
@flyin4speed they ended up going on by hand after some rotations of the crank I'll look today amd double check make sure they're all installed properly
@flyin4speed the centers are all facing the same direction whether it's right or not idk but 😆 I'm inclined to believe it was installed properly we got engine pro rockers
Hey Colton, he is referring to the roller trunion on a roller rocker that goes over the stud. One side has a rounded surface and then 180 deg has a milled flat spot for the adjusting nut to recess into.
What if you already have had the motor running and the lifter is pumped up, do you still set preload ?
Yes still set it at 1/2 turn.
I followed your method somehow I’m not getting any compression. Any suggestions
You have a valve hanging open somewhere. Do it at 0 lash, no extra half turn, and try to start it.
I'll give it stab again this weekend. When setting zero lash, does the rods needs to spin freely with a little drag?@@flyin4speed
@@jameswoods532 yes you could go by that. I just feel for up and down play on the rocker tip. If you’re lifters are pumped up I could see it hanging a valve. Set at 0, and see how it runs. It’ll be fine there if it runs good.
thanks for the advices and tips. I got compression now, but have a small leak which i'm working fixing. @@flyin4speed
Take your time and you will get it right
I adjust mine 180* from cam lobe peak lift so I have the lifter in the middle of the base circle. Takes a little math to get started but works great!
Si no need for a feel Guage
Adjust the preload from the bottom, 1/4 or 1/2 turn up from the bottom. That way the oil pumps up much quicker after bleed down and you get instant oil pressure on start up.
What r u putting it in?
1973 Nova
The guy that put all that bondo on your car did my 73 nova Lol I have the same amount of bondo on both sides of my quarters hahahahaha
Yes it’s ridiculous. I don’t know how that stuff didn’t crack or flake off the car over the years. A lot of weight hanging on the side of the car.
Had one. Fun car!
Great vid. Thank you!
How's the frame rails, brake lines and oil pressure?
I need to do this soon myself. Got a 73 too, but the 350 in it is seizing up. It cranks slow and is hard to turn by hand. Only engine on hand ready to go is a 307, but It'll do I guess.
Usually they r locked up or free, no in between. Starter going bad or motor have high compression?
@@flyin4speed I removed the starter the other day, and I still can't turn it. It's hard to turn over with an 18in ratchet even with the plugs out. Currently I'm scared I'm going to strip or break off the crank bolt. I'll pull the plugs again to see if it makes a difference, but I'm sure it will be minimal. I had 2 batteries in parallel and it cranked slow. The amperage draw was heating up the pos batt terminal pretty bad. Last owner said compression was pretty much normal. It has been sitting for a long time. I started searching for Nova engine removals to get my motivation up.
@@ordinaryJeff Soak the cylinders with penetrating oil over night and put a pry bar on the flex plate/flywheel and try it. Otherwise if ur not worried about saving that engine, yank it out and put something choppy in it. Good luck. It’s only nuts and bolts.
@@flyin4speed Yeah I should try the Marvel mystery Oil in the cylinders. I put a little oil in back before I tried starting it, but I can dump in some more. Nothing to lose at this point.
You're talking about the lower flange on the quarter panel about bending it in it's supposed to connect to the trunk drop off that's inside your trunk
Okay. I left it straight. That part was super rusty so it makes since why there was nothing there for it to attach to.
Hey bro if you have any questions on how to do some metal work on your Nova I've done a lot of metal work on different cars and I'm doing metal work on a nova I did mini tubs, and replaced the full quarter panel on the passenger side ,so if you have any questions hit me up
I done my 1st quarter panel job when I was 18 On a 73 Nova which I still have 35 years later I've gotten a lot better at body work and I realized the mistakes I made back then I even went back and corrected all these years later. Just keep pushing Through be proud of what you're doing and keep learning It's guys like you that make great body men
Did you get the 215 heads installed on the engine yet? Man I'm curious how well these heads perform. I just bought a pair of 215's like yours and a pair of 063's . Any dyno numbers etc??
No i went the aluminum heads route. i’d guess they’d be good to 550hp and maybe 6000 rpm stock ports. They’ll make a stock 454 piston though about 9:1 compression.
Glad you are saving this Nova well done!!!
Brush por 15 on those welds front and back after you grind them down . Then fill over top it will never rust back through the welds..seem seal the inside then splatter trunk paint
I haven't finished mine yet .I didn't do what you did just cut out the bad on the inner wheel well ,I cut out the whole thing .Your did it correct.
Where did you buy the sheet metal
Classic industries, not the best fitting but i made it work
Was it Goodmark,dynacorn or Amd
@@flyin4speed Are there any other supposed better fitting company’s?
@@firedemon2166 No, all new sheetmetal isn’t perfect. It’s just whose sucks the least.
