      The flower was cross pollinated with American Beauty pollen. I'm suspicious that AB pollen makes other fruits smaller.

    How many days from bud to flower and from flower to ripened fruit for this variety?

    • @DragonFruitPastime
      @DragonFruitPastime День тому

      I did not keep a good tracking log on this variety because it's hard to determine if the bud is a flower bud or a new branch bud. Before the bud becomes apparent, white hair grows out of the main branch first. It can take 2 to 3 weeks for me to confirm it's a flower bud. Base on my confirmation date, it'll take about 70 days for the flower to open. When to harvest the fruit is another challenge to track. Because the fruit is not sweet, I leave it on the branch for many weeks after the fruit turns pink. It turns pink around 60 days but I don't harvest it until 80 or more days. Even then, the fruit is still not sweet.

    Nice looking fruit. Just pollinated my first Zamorano flower, so hopefully we'll get fruit. What was the other fruit, having a hard time making out the name?

    How long does it normally take after the flower opened for the American beauty to ripen?

    • @DragonFruitPastime

      About 2 months. The one shown in this video flower opened on 6/25/24 and I harvested on 8/22/24 so it took 58 days. I have other ones that are still not ready to be harvest and it has been over 60 days already...

    • @DragonFruitPastime
      @DragonFruitPastime 10 днів тому

      This season, I used the following: Alfalfa Pellets (same pellets for feeding livestock) After last season, around end of October, I applied an inch of it over the soil Chicken Manure Applied around end of March when the plants show signs of waking up from the Winter Liquid Fish Fertilizer (many brands - no particular) Applied once per month starting in April General Hydroponics - Flora Nova Bloom Applied once per month starting in April (e.g. each month, use fish 1st week, 2 weeks later, use Bloom, then repeat following month) In between the fertilizer months, I just water.

    This was another fun and informative video. Thanks for taking the time Charlie (and Hailey!). Charlie you mentioned that you collected the pollen a few days ago. Can you share some details the best way to store it for short term vs. long term? I understand that the pollen has to be dried before you freeze it, so you don't get ice crystals that denatures the pollen protein. Do you have a guidance to ensure proper dryness? Also, for short term, do you refrigerate to avoid the ice issue? Thanks a bunch for sharing your knowledge--and having fun doing it!

    • @DragonFruitPastime
      @DragonFruitPastime 29 днів тому

      Hi Michael. After collecting the fresh pollen, I place it in a tin bowl for a day to let it air out. I keep the bowl cool inside my house on the kitchen counter. Cover the bowl wit a napkin to block moisture out. After the 1st day, I place the pollen in tiny glass jars with a napkin cover to let the pollen air out more on the kitchen counter for another day. After the 2nd day, I place the lids on and put them in the refrigerator. I like the tiny jars because I can shake the pollen inside vigorously to loosen/break up the clumps. Since I have so much pollen, I throw away old jar pollen when I get new ones. I'll only freeze the jar pollen if they're gathered from the end of the season. I'll save only a few American Beauty jars of pollen. I hear frozen pollen make smaller size fruits so I don't want to keep too much for the following year.

    Don't connect plants with each other with branches..because when one plant will fall off..they all will go after that .. sometimes there could be very strong wind... and you will not be able to control it ...because they are so heavy...

    Can you give the plant more nutrients to support more fruit? What is your general rule for number of fruit per branch? I assume you can choose to let more Sugar Dragon fruit grow since that fruit is already so small. i counted 42 buds on my SD right now, I don't have the heart to thin it

    Hi Charlie, What do you use to anchor your trellis in place? Did you bolt onto a concrete cinder block or do you use wooden pinwheel or something else? Do you recommend one method over another? I know you have the same winds and winter rains we have on SF Peninsula. thanks

    • @DragonFruitPastime
      @DragonFruitPastime Місяць тому

      Hi Michael. My pots are not anchored to the ground, just sitting on top of it. They held up to the past 4 years of weather with no problems. The soil & plant roots does a good job in keeping the trellis post from moving inside the pot. Even though the canopy extends beyond the pot, it doesn't seem top-heavy enough because I never see my pots rock or move in the wind.

    Nature has taught me to be careful with thinning too early. With thinning, there is an assumption that the plant will not abort the fruit remaining and that the environmental conditions will be favorable for fruit development. This spring, my area had two hail storms a week apart. The hail knocked my citrus fruits off the trees, damaged the fruits that remained on the trees, and shot holes in my dragon fruit stems, making them look like swiss cheese. Over abundance is nature's insurance policy. It is better to have grapes than to have nothing at all. Good luck!

    My poor buds are getting sun burnt and cooked from the Southwest Florida heat. I notice the buds don’t like being very close together either, and I know they will abort with the combination of heat stress and close proximity. I will put umbrellas out to cover up the daytime blossoms, and I will bag the buds to protect from the sun. Thank you for your info. 🐉👀👍🏻

    Thanks for sharing the great pictures. Good to know about the sensitivity being high after pollination. I will have my very first bloom any day now. Today is day 31 since bud for Connie Mayer. Most plants are about 70-80 % up the trellis. Connie was a very mature cutting that had bore fruit for the previous grower last year. I was lucky that she gave me some very mature cuttings.
