Velvet Skies - a lush, nostalgic soundscape with this chillwave-inspired vaporwave track. I was in the mood of picking up my Strat and pumping some chords into my DAW, to only find myself running everything through reverbs and delays with extra synths with a stamping drum machine. Creating Atmospheric Drum & Bass in Bitwig | No Hardware, Stock Plugins Only

Last week, I couldn't find a second to make music, jam with my gear, or even record a video! So it was even more frustrating to have to deal with complications in my hardware setup. As a result, I had the idea to turn the tables and create a track using only standard plug-ins. (Disclaimer: I later realized that I was using NI's Replika as the reverb). DnB is like fast chillout LoFi....
You should check out my LoFi EP wherever you can find music :-)
Of course it will always be niche. It's of the underground. While some tunes can break into the mainstream and offer a starting point, when you get into it as a younger person today, it's a deep dive down a rabbit hole going back nearly 4 decades. I started raving in 92 old skool days, still go raving to dnb, jungle and old skool today at 50. Even I feel I missed the depths of the rabbit hole of 88 to 91. I have some friends my age that totally missed the whole scene at the time and still don't get it 😂 What makes it special though is all these decades later, it's still here, still relevant and still appealing to the new listeners. Like 60s children had rock n roll as their youth culture, dnb/jungle/old skool is my youth culture and it will always be lasting because digital is the final evolution of music.
Drummond Base
Hi mate! Do you have more videos on using Addictive Drums with ableton? Great vids 🤠
RIP Lennie De Ice. one of the originators of the sound we love today.
I have the ti virus and the jp8080, the virus has a much more powerful HyPer saw than the jp. serum is also more powerfull and stable than a jp
As someone who lives in the UK drum and bass is no longer niche at all, atleast here, you will hear dnb in commercial clubs now. But yes where my family is from in europe no one knows what dnb is
Ive followed dnb since 92/93. I still love it now . Its by far the best and most diverse music in the world. Its energy cant be beat
are we just gonna pretend that drum n bass themed events are tremendously popular with dnb DJs headlining huge events like Ultra ?
I think the problem is that people arent creative anymore compare smack my bitch up with the crap pop style and neuro repetitive crap tracks we get now the problem is that everybody wants to be famous and rich but nobody puts in the work
Drum and bass dubstep and bass music as a whole capitalized and thrive through the internet people back then dont have that much money to buy synth and so they could create songs in audio recording software also daw where expensive and not free
Drum and bass was always a underground genre and it also survived and thrive through the internet and video games while trance, hands ups was massive in the mainstream they sold the cds which are they living through
Niche yh ? You should look intoo BRUK
Brit here 🇬🇧 Massive music lover - not so much D&B but I respect it. I enjoyed hearing your perspectives. I’m an audio guy by trade. I thought the drums were wild long before I learned about the old Akais, Amen & Funky Drummer breaks and knocking up the tempos - it sounded so “out of this world” when I first heard jungle etc. I need to know how the sausage was made! 😂 Some friends of mine are promoters with deep ties in the UK scene so I’ve been on the periphery and made sure the house systems didn’t blow up on several occasions. 😂 Lots of Mitsubishi’s being driven back then too! 😂😂😂
DnB is exploding lately here in 🇳🇱 NL. I’m guessing it will hit the charts in a more commercial sounding pop form soon.
a lot of people I hear saying that they dont know how to move to "uneven rhythms" of dnb, when I asked why they dont like it. techno and slower music seems less "threatening"
Why are you generalizing and saying that specific styles are not known in Israel or the Philippines? Everything has an audience. If someone from outside the country doesn't say that everyone doesn't know it in that country, then it's not true.
Thrity years later and still niche. Beyond a few pioneers, I imagine it's quite difficult to generate a signficant income as a 'dnb producer'.
Jungle is Massive II was my first experience. Wicked
I started production bcz of love to genre, but unfortunately found this as a niche genre and not rly pays of when you become a huge star. So i decided to start from techno and house bcz its much popular and there’s more chances to live from it But still making some jungle and dnb as a side and non profit project
yo that jungle dub tech track is amazing at 16:08. My 2 favorite genre are dnb/jungle and dub techno, deep urban vibe all the way
Is Subculture still existing? Think about it
remember it wasn't Roni Size, it was Roni Size and Reprazent - a whole collective. Other than that, perfect.
Had my first DnB experiences in the mid 90s. The music blew me away and the question spinning in my head was also HOW is this made? Photek, Ed Rush, Source Direct, Technical Itch, etc…. magical. Only in recent years I came across atmospheric DnB again that I actually like. Overlook, Ghost Warrior, Soul Intent, Holsten, Spktrm, Acid Lab, Vromm to name a few. I‘ve yet to discover your music Marc. 😊
Hi Mark! How have you been?? I hope everything is fine. I liked your video opinion about this topic with this genre. And like you, I also think that this genre of music is good for it to remain niche. I've started to digging and like this genre recently. About 2 years ago. Apart for.all the EDM music genres that exist, I have always found this one one of the most different and most interesting compositionally. Beginning with that characteristic drum pattern that is the "Amen Break". But the thing that really got me hooked on this genre... The pads. Those ambient and atmospheric Pads. Those jazzy ambient chords. And that's is what makes very unique for me. Even in the traditional Ambient Music, the chords that are used are very common (Just Mayor and Minor basically Basic music theory) But in Dnb or more into Atmospheric Dnb is way much more interesting to the ear. Artists like LTJ Bukem, Aquasky, Goldie, Intense, Mastermind and etc, have a lot of more experimentation between Jazz Music. I like a lot too the other subgenres like Neurofunk and Liquid DnB. And this is the style of music that I try to listen always when I get bored of listen the normal music that I like to 😂 I'm more straight of Punk and Heavy Metal guy hahaha. but those last year's I've started to listen almost everything. I like a lot the Mainstream EDM music too and the Dance pop music. Great video by the way. Good work with your musical projects and channel and very Christmas and upcoming New Year. Greetings from Chile. Cheers Man 👍
I remember when I started listening to drum and bass around 1994-1995. By the time 1999 rolled around, people were already discussing whether the genre would remain popular, where it was headed, and similar topics. When pop icons like David Bowie created projects incorporating drum and bass sounds or news spread about Björk dating Goldie, people began talking about the genre’s growing prominence. Indeed, certain cultural moments, like video games on the PS1 and PS2 or *GTA 3*, which featured the MSX FM radio station playing a mix from a Moving Shadow compilation, brought some visibility to the genre. However, like all music, drum and bass occupies its own niche, and its popularity is largely shaped by a specific generation of young people, typically under 25. Once that generation grows up, a new wave emerges with its own heroes and icons, either inventing new genres or reimagining past ones in a fresh way. This cycle is inevitable. The drum and bass we listened to in the mid-90s or early 2000s may not resonate strongly with someone who is 15-20 years old today. Of course, there are exceptions. Take jazz, for instance-a genre that can appeal to people of all ages. Yet, jazz today isn't as mainstream as it was in the 1920s and 1930s. The same applies to drum and bass. It’s akin to glam rock from the 1980s: every genre finds its niche over time.
Niche but thriving is the best I could hope for! To me D&B is very, very similar to extreme metal. You either love it or you have no idea it exists. Also similar in that it's a little tough to figure out what "sound" you are into as a civilian off the street with zero prior knowledge or the right language to even describe it 😂
Hi Marc can you remix lips inc funky town please mate and fair play this one is cool plenty of funk 👍
I had been searching recently to see if this was ever unearthed and came across this rebuild. Great work on this, stunning quality, thank you!
streaching ?
If you're me, then ya turn off the computer and dont save anything. Thank you for recording and sharing not just the tunes but your process.
Hi, did you have any issues when the battery starts to fade?
I never used to have it that long connected and running. I would expect constant reboots of the device at low capacity.
Great video, I love my JP-8000 more and more each day!
Nice rack.
Bro!!! You Germans ( just guessed it) know music better than anyone and always create the best sounds ! Convinced to buy one!!!!
Cool vibe, definitely an ambient jam rather than DnB though....
this was interesting. but not drum and bass in any shape or form. sorry.
jungle forever
Hey mate. Can I get those acid and lead patches?
I think many underestimate the stock Bitwig devices. They are not designed to be a solution to specific problem, such as mastering, but rather pieces of a puzzle to help you achieve a desired goal. For instance, the Multiband FX3 container allows you to build a multiband compressor, where you can assign and map modulators to the parameters of the devices inside the container to cater to a specific result. You can, for instance, assign a button to "mono" the low-end to avoid bass issues and/or increase stereo on mids/highs. I have steadily replaced many of my VST plugins with presets using ONLY Bitwig devices, with even more control to add features that I thought was missing. You can even enhance the capabilities of certain VST plugins by means of modulating the VST parameters, or combining it with Bitwig devices. Once you understand this, a whole world of possibilities opens up for you.
I like it
Lovely.
