Creating Atmospheric Drum & Bass in Bitwig | No Hardware, Stock Plugins Only

Last week, I couldn't find a second to make music, jam with my gear, or even record a video! So it was even more frustrating to have to deal with complications in my hardware setup. As a result, I had the idea to turn the tables and create a track using only standard plug-ins. (Disclaimer: I later realized that I was using NI's Replika as the reverb). Also Marc is your track Nat-R only available in a mix on here ?
Same, will be available soon 😊
Love this
I love the sound at 6:30, I also have a JP8000 could you tell me how to create this sound please.
This is the pure Supersaw, combined with the onboard EQ and delay. Filter set a little bit lower, so that the Filter Envelope kicks in while the arpeggiator plays the notes. This is what I like about the synth: You get marvellous sounds instantly!
Would that be the Arpeggiator on ‘2 Oct’ and the ‘ARP hold’ on?
Sorry, I’m still learning my way around the JP.
The arp-sequence was programmed and played via Bitwig. Hence, I did not use the onboard arp.
Oh I see, it sounds great. Would love to hear and see more supersaw riffs videos of the JP
Nice!
I wish Berhinger could release a new version of this synth with today's specifications.
how was there no gabber kick in a video about breakcore?
While the supersaw is great, IMO it was but one item that makes this synth essential. For live performance, the control layout is wonderful. If you need a mod wheel that can be ‘stuck’ (instead of always returning to zero, as the paddle does) you can assign that modulation to the ribbon. And then there’s the low pass filter, which rivals the Moog for openness and aggressiveness. The one big negative about the synth is the aliasing in the high registers. I avoid that by not spending inordinate time in those registers.
My i7 from 2011 have a lot of glitches with this vst.
Hi Marc, Nice comparison I made the same check on Yamaha An1X vs Novation Ultranova and thanks to your test I found out that the AN1X cannot compete in terms of super saw with the JP8000 but has a really caracter of its own (Warm and Dynamic range) , The Ultranova when tweking it right stays not much behind both JP8000 and Virus and the issue is more about the onboard FX section wich is weak. thanks for you inspiration and the german typical "Deutsche Gründlichkeit"
Mmmm 20:47 is magic.
Bitwig is the craziest DAW I've tried. It's the first one I can get sound coming out of a fader and still nothing recorded even with the recording enabled. Crazy.
Bro can you give me the config, I’d like to see if I can do this with my rtym, and maybe my mpc
Yeah I like those drum and bass breaks. What’s the config for the drumbrute and ableton. Thx
No joke, you said "to do this on an MPC would take ages," and that's the case with a LOT Of the stuff you're doing here. I have an MPC One Plus, which I find useful for certain things, but not for breakbeat stuff besides just chopping and getting the basic loop. 100% getting a DTII really soon. Really cool video.
ua-cam.com/video/NkUqnxhrjZ8/v-deo.html What are you supposed to make on on an unsynced scope and for some reason you're playing several voices??? What were you even trying to show?
For example show the amplitude-modulation? It was not my intention to show a raw supersaw, if this is your ask.
Just heard the track. Great vibe to it. Very well put together too.
At one point you’ve got it, then you lose it. In all walks of life.
Wow. Just a really solid track. Stands out. Sounds fresh. 8/10 More of this!
Great explanation of the JP-8K. The phase is not random per-se, rather it's free flowing (like an analog synth). This is one of the reasons why riffs and pads sound cohesive and move harmoniously. In fact I must get my JP-8080 out. I've left it far too long! The envelope curves are very linear. They got the oscillators done very well, the filter is unique but not authentic in analogue terms but it has a timeless sound.
Fully agree!
@@MarcRenton OK danke.
This is a really great track, would like to hear an hq version of it one day
Waay to long, but in progress 😊
Hi, I think your studio is fantastic, and your videos are super informative. Please tell me, how do you manage to turn all the devices on and off? Do you have a central remote control? Thanks in advance 🙏🏻
Hi @Raumfalle, Thank You so much for this question and sorry for not answering quickly. But I was thinking about your question so much the recent days and came up with the idea to make a whole video about this topic :D Short answer: I'm using Ikea switches and lights plus Home Assistant, Alexa and Apple Home. So you see, a little bit of everything :-)
Hi Marc , nice video . How did you make the sounds between 06:00 and 06:40 in this video ?
This is pure Supersaw from the JP8000 with delay and its eq. The arp I programmed in Bitwig and played the bass notes live in the video.
@@MarcRenton thanks for the info and well done !
Wish roland would have added the control ribbon to the jp8080.
Unfortunately mine is not working anymore. Hence, I never could make use of it. But I'm curious - what would you control with it?
@MarcRenton as an added layer of expression probably route it the pitch bend with filter.
Great video, except I you didn't use any good examples of breakcore
Thanks! Hence my ask at the end of the video: do you have some?
just make a template and when you save it select collect and save so everytime you do a new project and use the template it auto collects and saves.
great video! I love improvising jungle and drumfunk on the Elektron Octatrack 😊 ☮️ ❤️.
Interesting perspective. I feel like breakcore started with DHR and Bloody Fist, etc. around 93-94 and at that time the breaks were not particularly complex, just distorted and mixed with punk, gabber and offensive hip-hop samples. Around 96-97 you get DJ Scud and Ambush records, which is more akin to extremely noisy techstep. Shortly after this you see Shizuo and Patric Catani, on his "100 DPS" record, getting more granular with the breaks but I think this is due to the influence of Squarepusher, Mike Paradinas and the whole IDM/"drill & bass" thing. Then Venetian Snares comes in and sort of takes over the whole thing. Which I think may have something to do with the fact that IDM kind of died when it entered its glitch era at the same time.
Breakcore is a very broad genre, by all characteristics jungle can be considered its subgenre, it just appeared earlier.
Need to come back soon
I just found your video, thank you for referencing my thesis about the Super Saw ;)
I remember that paper, for some weird reason... Probably because I've owned an 8080 since y2k. :) I also remember you. Probably because of your unpronounceable name. :)
Oh yeah this sound throws me back to the early 2000s hardstyle I was so obsessed with back then.
Champion, I always love to refresh my genre definitions and the evolution of drums and bass in music. ❤
Great example of the tyranny of small differences. For people outside these genres, they can seem very similar, but ask fans of either and often enough, they'll have a massive preference for their favorite or reject the other outright.
Breakcore is if punk had a mutant child with dnb, jungle, idm and gabba. Also, you broke the first rule of breakcore
I think most, if not all, Jungle tracks I listen to are on vinyl so they have a warmer, more analogue, feel to them. Breakcore to me tends to sound a lot more digital with less warmth. This might entirely be based on how I consume both genres, but could perhaps also come down to how they were produced.
Soundmurderer & SK-1 - Telembodanustyle, probably the best example I can think of that flawlessly blends the breakneck speed and editing of what people expect from a breakcore track with the sound palate of typical 90's jungle and liquid drum'n'bass someone like LTJ Bukem is known for. Also released on Aphex's Rephlex label so you know it's worth checking out. Remarc is the earliest guy I can think of that is first and foremost a jungle producer and DJ but seems to have had the thought to meticulously edit all the classically used jungle breaks in ways that wouldn't be traversed in the same way for a few more years after he already started doing it. Alec Empire - The Destroyer is classically mentioned as the beginning of breakcore although I've seen that claim contested in the past. Still an amazing album.
Saw Atari Teenage Riot in San Francisco in the 90's. It was at the Great American Music Hall.... in my top 5 loudest things I've ever heard. We had to leave the venue it was so punishing.🤘
RAVERBASHING!!!! LET'S GOOO!!!!!
This is awesome! TY!
Solid job marc. It's not so easy to sum up without a whole history lesson or knowing every listener's context. I'd say the biggest difference between them is that jungle is a fairly narrowly defined genre that had a strong cultural context, being the london / uk rave scene of the early-mid 90s, and that breakcore is a more a movement that has a much weaker cultural context, and was/is based on reacting to and pushing the elements and techniques of jungle, hardcore, and other extreme music into areas beyond the formalizations of those genres.
Nice thoughts on the subject Marc. Would love to hear your thoughts on Tech Step
I very much agree with how you defined jungle and breakcore individually. What I run into a lot with newer young fans is jungle accidentally getting put under an umbrella of what they call breakcore because of the shared elements, but regardless they enjoy all the levels of complexity from jungle to breakcore on a spectrum. Since some newer artists are fluidly moving between the genres, it's hard to label someone as a producer of one single genre within a single song, let alone their entire catalog. A recent favorite of mine is Meh.Tuhl.Hedz by Cynthoni (of course a reference to the classic record label), which starts pretty traditionally, but evolves towards breakcore by the end, before settling back down. Also thank you for releasing POD on bandcamp!!
I never used Breakcore as a genre title, but if I had to sum it up, I’d put in something that sounds super crazy and mashed up in effects such as Venetian Snares (Planet Mu) and played at a super fast speed. Yeah it’s just different sounds of one music at the end of the day
Great Video as always. Breakcore is great but i think the genre is hard to get because a lot of its content is carried by complexity. That is very cool to produce and listen too. Love it but also often not really memorable if that makes sense.
Fair enough!
@MarcRenton i admit i have to dig a bit deeper and understand where this genre starts and where it ends. Some aphex twin stuff is for sure "breakcore" and tells on the other hand unforgettable storys.
mhm!
breakcore has this alec empire punk attitude foundational feature i guess...its in its nature to play outside anyones game. im not deep enough into breakcore to see if this is still a core thing to the genre. the teenage angsty kids of the ninetees loved jungle for its hard fast vibes and this led to techstep and later neuro...i guess breakcore had a similar crowd but with some added political attitude to it
What synth stand is that?
