You know.. it's unfortunate Alessandro Juliani did not continue voice work for anime. But maybe there's a reason for that. He has background in voice work but he's also a legit actor. He does movies and tv shows. The entire English cast was solid like that almost all of them had background in acting. Not only that, I'm willing to bet they were also PAID more. The entire production team was likely paid more. So.. why is dub so different now? Why is it not as good or is "cringe" now? When DVD/Bluray sales and Cable TV (+ads) went out the window, the companies that licensed and dubbed anime could no longer make money and cost was more than the returns. Streaming services meant they were paid less. And so.. to cut costs they decided to no longer to hire professional actors and professional production teams. Notice how all these anime voice actors are ONLY doing anime work. They barely do voice work for games and if they do.. it's anime related too. So, does this mean all anime is dub? Nope. MOVIES. Anime movies are the ONLY industry that get returns from sales. And therefore, they get high quality voice actors and production.

i'm a heavily sub over dub person but death note is the exception. I genuinely prefer it over the japanese version, especially for L's voice it is so perfect

You can't unhear the character's voice from the actor.

I realized why his voice is so unique. He has an aristocratic British intonation and articulation, but with less bounce on the consonants and a very flat American accent. That works very well with L being British without sounding out of place amongst the rest of the cast.
