    I am in absolute love with your acting abilities. I don't know much about Shakespeare as I am at the very early stages of my career in the industry as an aspiring student however i felt the emotion of the piece and the feelings of the character, I adore the way you psychologically connect with the character. Executed to perfection! Smashing job brother! :)

      Great question, Ravinder! As a high school senior, you are not eligible to apply for YSD. Yale School of Drama is a graduate-level school offering Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) degrees as well as Certificates in Drama in all theatrical disciplines. So that means, an applicant (like yourself) must either have already received a 4-year undergraduate degree (for example, a BA or BFA) from an accredited U.S. institution or the international equivalent recognized by Yale University; or if they haven’t gone to college, they must be at least five years out of high school to qualify for the Certificate. High school seniors are not eligible to apply to YSD. are you able to study theatre at yale if you aren’t accepted into the program based on your audition?

    • @johnrcolley
      @johnrcolley 2 роки тому

      Good question, Camden! In order to study in the acting program at Yale, you must audition and be accepted into the acting department. However, there are other areas of study at the graduate school in addition to acting: Design, Sound Design, Directing, Dramaturgy and Dramatic Criticism, Playwriting, Stage Management, Technical Design and Production, and Theater Management. Depending on your interest, you can attain an MFA in any of these fields. Yale also provides Nondegree Study. You can find out more details about technical internships, research fellows, and special students at the link below: www.drama.yale.edu/admissions/ Nondegrees are about halfway down the admissions page. Let me know if you have any other questions! ❤️🎭

      Good question, Roma! The David Geffen School of Drama at Yale is a full-time, 3 years Masters program (MFA). Typically, we'd attend training classes from 9a-2:00p, and then rehearsals for production from 2:30-11p Monday - Saturday. We also had work-study peppered into our schedule, depending on our individual production assignments for each semester. All that is to say, It's a very rigorous program! Hope this helps :)

    Hi John! I really aprreciated your video, so refreshing, thank you :) I'm an acting student from Vienna and I would have to travel all the way to the States in order to audition for YSD. So, my question is about the lenght of the auditioning process - how many days does it last? Meaning - how much time does it pass between the audiotion day and the first call back? And between the first call back and the second one? Finally, how many days (more or less) should I stay in the States during this process before going back to Vienna? I guess my question is a little bit...peculiar...but I hope you can help me with this. Thank you!

    • @johnrcolley
      @johnrcolley 3 роки тому

      Great question, Marko! The initial audition, callbacks and interview typically take place on the same day. If you make it through all those check-points, you may be asked to attend a final callback weekend in New Haven, CT. The turn-around time between the day of your first auditions to the final callback weekend varies, depending on when and where you audition. Yale performs an audition tour: faculty members travel to three cities-New Haven, Chicago and San Francisco-in order to see students. The year I auditioned, I was in San Francisco, the final leg of Yale’s audition tour. So the time between my first day of auditions and being requested for callback weekend was about two weeks. However, someone who auditioned in New Haven (the first city on the Yale tour) would have waited longer before going to callback weekend, as the faculty members still have to see initial auditions in both Chicago and San Fran before completing the trip. All this being said, things change from year to year. My best advice is, once applications are open and you’re able to schedule your initial audition day, to contact the school directly. They may be able to give you a date for callback weekend so that you can schedule your initial audition accordingly.

    How long did you prepare your pieces?

    • @johnrcolley
      @johnrcolley 3 роки тому

      That’s a great question, Noah Michal! I had four monologues prepared, two main and two back-up. My favorite contemporary monologue I had discovered and worked on for several years before auditioning for Yale. It was not something chosen specifically for grad school auditions, but I fell in love with the piece and worked on it in various classes throughout the years for my own satisfaction. When I then decided to apply to school, I knew I would use it. Conversely, my main classical monologue I found three or so months before my Yale audition. I worked with an acting professor at UCLA on my classical text, and it was an invaluable decision to help me improve my skill with Shakespeare. My back-up contemporary was a selection from a production I had been in a year prior. Therefore, I had the benefit of doing the entire play at my disposal. And my secondary classical was something I had worked on in undergrad. As you can see, there were monologues in my arsenal I’d known for years and others that were relatively new. The most important thing is to determine how YOU work as an actor: some performers like to have material for a long time-to know it like the back of their hands; others prefer less in order to keep it fresh. There isn’t one rule or one-size-fits-all. Ultimately, you want to make decisions that help you feel the most confident in your audition!

So as an international student what should i do to get into Yale Drama? and how can i make a "portfolio" in a pandemic? Or do you think they will want an amazing portfolio when i will apply (which is 3 years later) if covid is still around? And what should be in a portfolio? I have been playing piano for 8 years. Will that help getting into Yale drama?

    • @johnrcolley
      @johnrcolley 3 роки тому

      Great questions, Yagmur! First of all, I’ll clarify a common misconception: Yale School of Drama is a graduate-level school offering Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) degrees as well as Certificates in Drama in all theatrical disciplines. So that means, an applicant (like yourself) must either have already received a 4-year undergraduate degree from an accredited U.S. institution or the international equivalent recognized by Yale University; or if they haven’t gone to college, they must be five years out of high school to qualify for the Certificate. High school seniors are not eligible to apply to YSD. Here are two links that demonstrate the requirements for MFA Yale School of Drama degrees: www.drama.yale.edu/training/acting/application-requirements/frequently-asked-questions/ www.drama.yale.edu/admissions/frequently-asked-questions/ That may sound disappointing, but good news, Yagmur! You can still apply to Yale College, which offers 4-year undergraduate degrees, including a BA in Theatre and Performance Studies. I’ve attached three links, the first two which should answer all your questions about international applications and the other about the specifics of the theatre degree at Yale College: admissions.yale.edu/international admissions.yale.edu/applying-yale-international-student catalog.yale.edu/ycps/subjects-of-instruction/theater-studies/

    Hey! I’m not the best dancer, but I really wanna audition for Yale school of music/drama. Is there a dance segment of the audition?

    • @johnrcolley
      @johnrcolley 3 роки тому

      Great question, Ronan! Just to clarify, Yale School of Drama and Yale School of Music are two separate graduate schools within the larger University. They offer different degrees and different fields of study. To answer your question, YSD does not require any kind of dance or movement component to the initial auditions. During the callback weekend, it is likely for prospective students to take a variety of movement classes with members of the faculty. However, you can put your fears to rest, as there is no traditional “dance call” like you might find in a musical theater program.
