Simulation automation tools for workshops and workflows
In this video I review new facilities in the ESP-r suite to capture user inputs during a simulation session and turn them into scripts which replicate that session.
Great for coffee-break automation tasks - for example to drive a data mining session which can be invoked as the simulation project progresses.
And then we encapsulate a variety of workflows into a software agent that sequentially creates a fully attributed simulation model for use in a training workshop. We see how such an agent can help recover ‘glitched’ models.
I am seriously chuffed by how much less pedantic the process of creating automation agents is and how it might reduce the frictions and skills requirements needed to automate common tasks.

Simulation model editing - in two places at once!

Simulation tool interfaces are great a focusing in on specific aspects of our models. And often we have to break our focus and traverse the interface to another part of the tool to discover adjacent geometric or compositional details. This video shows a pragmatic work-flow that helps to maintain focus by using two instances of the tool interface - one focused on the working model and one on a l...

Visual & thermal assessments within buildings with complex facades

Buildings with complex facades can pose challenges for design teams in terms of thermal and visual assessments. ESP-r and Daylight Factor and inside image workflows

Hello. Try 20 percent stab área, small rudder area, less than 10 percent . Make fuselaje almost equal to span, make wing aspecto ratio between 6 or 7. Make nose equal to 1/4 of span . Try first without motor. I had the same issues for years. Remember, small planes do not resemble the shape of full size aircraft, they operate in totally different conditions. And yes, pushers need a Lot of down thrust. Have a Nice day.
Thanks for the comments. I will look back over my notes about the dimensions when I try a similar design again. Certainly needs a stronger launch to avoid the initial dip that pushers seem to have.
👍
Thanks for the look around

Informative. It should help a lot in getting the system up and running. Question: I assume that there is no problem viewing the EMONPI Web page using an An Apple Macbook Air to view all the graphs? I'd appreciate confirmation please?
I do not recall having any issue with the web access from any of my computers. I sort of remember if there were more than a couple of computers trying to access it then it got sluggish.
Hello Jon, when I try to open the program, I get an error message indicating that it can't find the PRJ file. Can you help me solve this problem? Best regards.
You need to go into the OS system settings and adjust the PATH environment variable to include the folder where the ESP-r executables are located. Normally when using the installer this step is not normally required. The entry would likely be C:\ESRU\esp-r\bin -Jon
I am glad you enjoyed the video. A good city for walking, give you self time to explore! And Discovery really is worth the time to get through the exhibits an on to the ship.

What a magnificent creature to capture in flight. One of the joys of a Norway cruise.
I was so lucky to have spotted it. So many of us spent as much time on the decks as we spent inside - the scenery was magic.
The same with us. The scenery is so captivating, that regardless of chill or drizzle we took every precious moment to be out on all the marvellous outdoor space that Balmoral has @@jon.in.glasgow1989
What a charming and wonderful walk this was to see. We know a little about the history of the castle, and saw it sitting in the landscape from the sea during a Fred Olsen cruise of the British isles. But this walk that you have highlighted looks very inviting. And one we would likely do the next time we come west from our home just outside Edinburgh.
Lots of folk head straight for the castle (well worth it) and yet the grounds are extensive and varies and some folk don't realise the wonderful views from the walks available.
I’ve been looking at this idea “old balsa/ monokote” gas rc guy. Looking at building again. All the foam stuff is insanely heavy with really poor flight characteristics. But if you mix 3d printed ribs, with old school building techniques it would be easy to get really strong and very light wing structures. I haven’t seen anyone try that yet. They all want the 3d printer to do the whole job. Which I don’t think is realistic. The new electric power systems definitely are good sadly the air frames today are just heavy junk because everyone wants zero build/assembly effort.
One of my older videos uses 3D printed ribs with a foam skin that also has a packing tape coating - a hybrid ARMIN approach. What I have not yet done is use the LW-PLA ribs with the foam skin. Should work a treat as long as there is a CF spar (or two) to tie the LW-PLA ribs together. Let us know if you try something like it!
First evidence of the efficacy of the video - someone in Japan who had had problems noticed the suggestion to install version 11 of the GNU compilers and with that change they were able to successfully get ESP-r up and running!
Who carried out all this work?
Hello, when I get to the part at 7:45, "Building results file name?" it gives me the error "MZLIBF: error at record 1." Then if I start the simulation I obtain "mzwdar: results library error at record 2 0 while reading for default window and door areas." and then a really long series of errors such as: MFOUTPB: error at record 1. Thank you very much in advance!
It is saying this because it is expecting to find a folder named 'tmp' where the results file should have been placed. It didn't and thus this rather unhelpful error message. Check where the results file actually is and make sure you provide a path to that. Note the newer version of the tools that I am working on correct some of this.

Sir I have a question
You did not include the question in your comment.
@@jon.in.glasgow1989 I was trying to learn ESP-r. I am trying to run an example from the existing models. How should I proceed to simulate just as a beginner. Like when I try to initiate simulation, it keeps on showing error. I'm doing it in windows 10
Hmm ill have to watch again. I dont think vertical shade will work. Only exterior shades/blinds will work
For an East or West facing facade vertical external shading devices can be effective during hours when a horizontal shade does little. The Radiance analysis is showing the patterns. Best is to limit glazing on the East or West.
I love this line, it’s my local
Certainly there were lots of smiling faces on the day we visited. Do you have an idea about the mix of locals vs visitors on the line?
@@jon.in.glasgow1989 I think it’s more of visitors than locals, also the red steam engine is called FR 20 and is 160 years old this year
A few questions came up about the video: "How long did it take to get to Spitsbergen" - we left Rosyth late afternoon on the 19th of July, journeyed along the coast of norway arriving at the North Cape on the 25th and set out late afternoon heading north. We caught sight of Spitsbergen probably around 6am on the 27th. Sailed up to the glaciers of Pyramadin and then back to arrive in Longyearbyen at 15h00. We stayed overnight and departed 17h00 on the 28th. Sailed south and arrived in Sortland 13h00 on the 30th. About accessing rocks. The place abounds with quad bikes and snowmobiles for hire, each of which has a rifle mount. Getting up to the terminal moraine just a hefty walk and since it is outside the town limits it was necessary to have a guide. I have seen ads for cycle touring with guide. They really really do not want to shoot the bears and there is a strict procedure for how to escalate deterrence actions. Interesting story - several places had places to leave your shoes/boots as well as firearms on entry. No loaded guns in town. Our guides had a regime of attaching magazine when we crossed the line but the rifle was bolt action so that it would be unlikely to go off with out a deliberate arming. My recollection is that the last shooting was 18 months ago. What I don't know is how ice locked the place is in the winter. In Greenland most of the villages we visited were frozen in for lots of months and only air travel worked so 'the first boat of the year' was a really big thing.
Delightful! Thanks Jon. Haven't been on a train for a long time.
I am glad you liked it. The experience of steam brings out the '8 year old' in me....
Hi, your 240deg print is still foaming as it is less than half the weight of regular pla. The hotter you print lw pla, the weaker it is so a happy middle ground needs to be found. At higher temps with higher foaming I have found the parts to become ever more flexible and weaker
Thanks for the comment. On my Prusa `mini I also have to print PLA at a higher than normal temperature (~+10C) so I think the temperature sensor is slightly inaccurate. That suggests that the 240C for LW-PLA might actually be 230C. I have an IR camera - perhaps worth checking.
I did some further testing and found that if I increase the flow rate a bit (from 0.42 to 0.52) and slow the print speed to 30mm/s I get a slightly thicker perimeter with 5 degrees cooler temperature - first layer still 240C, other layers 235C. Next step is to do some test cubes at 235 and 230C to check thickness and stiffness.
Love it some great photos of the train 🚞👍
Thanks! It was such a nice day for photos.
And a super group of folk running it.
Very good video thanks
Thanks very much. I do enjoy making the videos - not as much as actually being there. Have you ridden on this line?
@@jon.in.glasgow1989 yes
Thank you for the great video! How does the process of warranted abstraction in creating a digital twin balance the need for accuracy with the practicality of model complexity? Specifically, how do you decide what aspects of the physical copy machine are essential to include in the digital twin, and what can be left out without significantly impacting the model's performance?
Thanks for the question. At its current level of complexity and with only a few of these in an office building would have a minimal impact on run time. If the building hosted scores of these for production work then scaling would be an issue - one would likely need to setup lots of different work loads and the host room would certainly grow in complexity (with the shared surfaces) and that could test a solver. The shorter tilmestep is the elephant in the room. It will create larger performance results files as well as longer to run-times. It would be worth testing to see if a 2 or 3 minute tilmestep degrades the deliverables. I would make a differently complex model if it were being made for use by the mfg of the kit who wanted to study heat transfer within the machine. That would be multi-zone and might require an order of magnitude more surfaces as well as that destructive tear-apart and lots more monitoring. And if one were serious about run-time creating an even more abstract variant would be worth trying. If a detailed comfort study was not called for a more abstract DT might be good enough.

When I run the simulation, the project manager always show that results library error at record 20 while reading for default window and door areas. How to solve this problem?
Hi default windows & doors are an ancient data type. What version of esp-r are you using? What operating system?
@@jon.in.glasgow1989 Thanks for your reply!😊 The version of esp-r is native_win10_v13_16, and the operating system is win10.I have tryed reinstalling the software, but it didn't work.
I think that ESP-r is not finding the simulation results file. Can you capture image of your screen a) when running prj, b) just as the simulation starts, c) when you are starting the results analysis module. Send these to jon.in.glasgow@googlemail.com
@@彭钰珂 I figured out what the problem is. In the folders of the model there needs to be a 'tmp' folder. This is where ESP-r puts simulation results when you ask for an interactive simulation. Say you have a model named test. In the test folder there should be folders named cfg, ctl, doc, dbs, zones, nets AND tmp.

Thank you. It was fun putting the video together. I can still smell the steam!
So many simulation staff have habits that bring them back to the same solutions they used in earlier projects. In my opinion this is poor value for the client when we don't take an hour to check whether a different scheme might deliver better comfort or lower running costs. Given that your competitors might be similarly habituated that little bit of extra might help you stand out from the crowd. Afraid to poke you head above the parapet? Add a comment about this. Found clients who insist on the 'usual suspects but then can be convinced write down how you made it work!
Folk seeing the video might not appreciate how important the late season rains are in Southern Africa. And how it is changing the landscape and wildlife patterns. If you have been impacted by changes in rainfall leave a comment. If you have busted a tyre or suspension on a pothole on roads like these tell us about it! If you have found ways of sorting potholes in places where the formal infrastructure groups are no longer able to deliver this would be even better to read about.
Quite a few folk have viewed this. I have gotten some private comments. And it would be great to get feedback from you so that others can see. Feedback does help motivate the creation of these videos. And if you like it then tick the box. And if you don't like it then it would be good to find out so I can do a better job.

This video is approaching 150 views. Most gratifying. And I am planning to re-print the fuselage in LW-PLA to get a better wing loading and allow it to fly even slower. Should I produce a video about that? Let me know in the comments.
After a year I am getting ready to evolve ESP-r to do, hopefully a better job with the 3D nature of building facades. We might begin to see better feedback in the wire-frame views, better exports to Radiance and Blender as well as initial steps to the heat transfer at junctions in buildings. Would you like to see a series about videos about this? Let me know in the comments!
This video has been viewed more than 700 times. Word has gotten out about it which is great. And it would be good to get your feedback. How did you find the video? Did you use it as part of PH training? Are you a designer and if so did it help you get a better intuition about shading devices?
I recently talked with a practitioner in Canada who was continually confronted by the 'realities of the commercial market' - that the compliance rules that force every room in a project to be include in the model - in several instances more than 2000 thermal zones was forcing a low resolution in those zones. That the complexity of the facades needed to be abstracted into 'an average facade build-up' that really was uncomfortable. Have you been pushed to create lower resolution models than you are comfortable with? Leave a comment.
What I learned from the driver 10 months ago about having to run their small engine because they simply could not reliably source coal is also playing out in the heritage lines that I visited a week ago. Some are cutting back on their schedules. If you see this video and like it please consider going on this narrow gauge line and helping to fill the seats needed to fund it. If you have recently visited Heatherslaw leave a comment about your experience!
Initially I created this video to illustrate a number of points during PH workshops. The PH exam included a design task and lots of folk found it really difficult to pull together the information from the workshops and their new skills into a series of sketches that could allow the PHI to judge how well they integrated their new skills into practice. Although the PHI is changing how they are doing the 'design task' in the exam I still think that reviewing a past project and doing a though experiment to see what would be needed to make it into something like a PH is time well spent. Do you agree? Have you done it recently? Were you able to evolve past designs to get better performance - even if you might not choose to label it PH?
Since I made this video SEEK Thermal have come out with newer units and better software that delivers additional feedback on the phone screen. I have found the side-by-side views (eye-view & IR view) rather useful - but it is a bit of an art form to get the hang of using it. Would be good to read in the comments about how your use of thermographic kit is evolving.
It would be good to read your comments about how folk are successfully getting the skills needed to deliver PH quality projects. How many deliver that quality without bothering with the PHI logo on the wall of the building?
I got a couple of private comments about master-slave controls. It would be great to read your comments here about experiences and the complexities of this most ubiquitous of control regimes.
As this video approaches 100 views it would be good to read comments about your experiences with UTM and Linux on M2 Macs. I don't yet have M2 kit so it would be good to know if the methods need tweaking.
With the video getting close to 100 views it would be good to read your comments about Native Windows ESP-r vs WSL. WSL on W11 does much more easily support ESP-r running in graphics model.
It would be good to read comments about your experience with W11 installs as well. I know many folk with rather new kit who are prevented from moving to W11.
Thank you very much for the video can you please share the link for the Setup of ESP-r?

As this video approaches 100 views it would be good to read about others experiences with early stage control explorations and how they worked out later on in the design / decision making process.
If you watch this video and you have ideas about automating tasks it would be good to read your comments.
I created this video to give other hints as to the challenges of retrofitting older masonry buildings which have faults in their floor structures e.g. sags over the span and noise transmission. Your floor might differ in details and it would be good to hear of others undertaking similar work.
I did some of the work along with a couple of local joiners. Their details might be somewhere in my filing cabinet. Not rocket-science, just lots of attention to detail needed as well as some heavy lifting.
This project has been gestating for several months. Initially it was as background for an IBPSA paper for a conference in Rome in 2018. The limitations of a conference paper combined with the advent of better thermographic cameras got to me to take a new set of measurements. What that showed was a wider range of temperatures in the machine case and thoughts about how one might design the digital twin to deliver that broader range. So the next video is going to spend more time with the methods needed to evolve the model that was created several years ago. It could make a good case study for the design of models which to deliver specific behaviours.
