Bamboo Rhizomes and Other Things in the Garden
The weather has been unbearable for the past month and a half. The heat index most days was near or over 100ºF. Some days it was 108 - 110ºF.
Also, the bamboo activity is mostly underground this time of the year. So there isn't much to see going on.
Other plants are showing their stuff at the moment.
Now that the heat and humidity are beginning to subside I'm hoping to get more done in the garden again. Stay tuned for more videos to come. :)

Can I Garden Under Bamboo?
Переглядів 314Місяць тому
Bamboo makes quite a dense shade and makes the ground underneath it very dry in most cases. Gardening under bamboo can work if you are careful about plant selection and are very observant about the natural cycles that play out in your garden throughout the year. Plants featured: Phyllostachys parvifolia Lycoris squamigera

Bamboo Rhizomes | When They Jump
Переглядів 233Місяць тому
This is now summer and it is rhizome growing season. The roots of bamboo don't grow during the entire warm season. They have a period of a few weeks that they grow similar to how the shoots do in the springtime. It's common for rhizomes to jump and in this video we'll take a look at what do when you see a jumping rhizome.

Nash Mole Trap | The BEST Mole Trap Ever!

My apologies for not showing actually placing the mole trap back in the ground. The rain we received last night has pretty much washed the runs back in and it's difficult to tell where to place the mole trap. It does go in the actual runs, not in the mole hills. You can place the mole trap in a run near a hill such as I did, but it does have to go in a run. I hope I explained the use and placem...
Single White and Red Flower Hybrid Hibiscus
Переглядів 47Місяць тому
This is another Hibiscus that was hybridized by my best friend. It is in chicken wire for its own protection since it is a very young plant. I'm liking the red starburst on this one very much! I can't believe how far to the ends of the petals it reaches! This cultivar is yet unnamed.
Hybrid Hibiscus | Yet Unnamed

This incredible hybrid hibiscus is developing into a showstopper. Not only is the flower absolutely stunning, but the foliage is so shiny that it almost looks plastic! My best friend bred this cultivar and gifted it to me. While this one looks similar to Hibiscus 'Starblast' (not in the parentage) I believe the starburst reaches a bit further to the ends of the petals on this one I have.
Hibiscus x 'Hanami Dango' | That's What I'm Calling It
Переглядів 38Місяць тому
This beautiful double flowering, variegated, hybrid hibiscus cultivar was bred by my best friend and she gifted it to me. It now lives in a prominent location in the bamboo garden. It is the focal point at a place where two paths converge. My friend was also kind enough to allow me to name it. At this time at least, I have chosen the name 'Hanami Dango' because of the colors resembling those of...

Do Japanese Beetles Feed on Bamboo?

What all do Japanese Beetles eat? Well, it seems like a long list. There are a few things they don't touch. Let's take a look to see if bamboo made the list. There are a lot of things on the market for eliminating Japanese beetles. I have tried the attractant, scent, pheromone traps in years passed. The idea is to attract as many Japanese beetles to the trap as possible. Even beetles from neigh...

Pseudosasa japonica ’Tsutsumiana’ | Weeded After New Shoots Hardened

Pseudosasa japonica ’Tsutsumiana’ doesn't get large here in this growing zone, but I still like it. It has just had the weeds pulled from it since the new shoots have hardened off. I had been waiting to pull the weeds until the new growth hardened so that I didn't break off any new shoots. It looks a lot better now that the marestail has been removed.

    When is a good time to cut the bamboo rhizomes to transplant for propagation?

    • @CountryWhatnotGardens
      @CountryWhatnotGardens 2 дні тому

      I like to do my propagation any time between late Oct and late winter to early spring before the new shoots emerge. I find that during that dormancy period is the best time.

    This video is useful because I’m interested in using Bissetii to make a grove, but personally how fast does it spread based on your experience?

    • @CountryWhatnotGardens
      @CountryWhatnotGardens 4 дні тому

      P. bissetii does spread, but it's not the fastest in the genus. It will vary under different growing conditions too. Bamboo, no matter which one, will take 2-3 years to establish a root system. During which time it will appear to be doing nearly nothing above ground. After that it will slowly gain speed. The grove in this video was planted as one plant in 2000 and would be larger if I hadn't contained it by mowing the perimeter. I got the plant in 1997 and moved it to this location in 2000.

      It must be close to 20 years. A good 15-20 years anyway. I've found that it leaves a lot to be desired in cold hardiness in my climate. It's been a nice bamboo aside from that. Thank you for watching. 😊

      @CountryWhatnotGardens 18 днів тому

      'Rufa' is the only Fargesia that I've gotten to live through hot summers, but it's certainly not a hedge. Eight years in and it's still under 3' in height. A root barrier and a Phyllostachys species might be a better bet for a hedge depending on your situation.

    I have one of the Nash traps and it's like setting a bear trap. Unfortunately, our soil is too rocky to use them. It's nearly impossible to get those loops down far enough so the trigger is over the run. I have probably 5 other kinds of traps and have only caught moles with the Victor spike traps. Now in August with little rain our soil is hard and can't even get those in the ground so just bought several barrel traps and have them out. Waiting to see how they work. I've tried the Cinch traps and Trapline traps with no success as well.

    Do you fertilize your bamboos? maybe they lack potassium and phosphorus in the soil, which is why they are not hard enough and break like this?

      It doesn't happen often, but once in a while a few here or there will. They each had some type of damage and discoloration at the site of the break. No telling what it was. A few culms out of an entire grove isn't bad. Late freezes at the wrong stage in shoot growth can damage them for later too.

    @zurkatri1049 I don't know why my replies won't show under your comment. I can't see it at least. I don't know what kind of games UA-cam is playing. I've checked it in every browser and it's not showing anywhere. Anyway, I had said something along the lines that I haven't done any winter protection yet. I would like to possibly experiment sometime with laying down the Pseudosasa and Indocalamus, then cover with burlap to see if that will help the culms to overwinter. If I do that I would wait for three months of temperatures below 45ºF to be sure the plants are dormant and that I'm not covering them during a period when they should still be actively photosynthesizing. I hope YT allows this comment to show.

      Typically, as a whole, Fargesia species don't like high heat and humidity. However I did hear of someone in Missouri having success with robusta. I'd go with the Fargesia if it will live in your location since the height could be an issue when old culms fall over.
