Do you have any tips for germinating seeds?

I have a tiny little St John's worth plant growing in my front yar, but the few flowers have turned brown, so I was hoping to harvest the seeds so I can sew them in my medicinal garden for next year. Would you know when and how to sow those seeds? Is it better to start in pots inside and transplant in the Spring or direct sow? I am in Southern Ontario, Canada. Thanks

Do you cut the tiny pieces of filter as double or single ply? Do you aim to remove the air from the plastic bag before sealing?
