    On the lasfit website it states that they are not street legal

    • @ramblingambition
      @ramblingambition День тому

      Thanks for sharing that, the law actually says any led replacement bulb for halogen dot headlight assemblies regardless of manufacturer are not legal for highway use, I do have to say I am not quite sure who or how anyone would check or determine that the headlights are not street legal in an impactful way to the operator, the only way to get led headlights is through the manufacturer or through a dot complete headlight assembly replacement. I am not saying anyone should just do what they want but each person has to weigh the benefits of the vastly improved light output and visibility vs having a dot compliant bulb that does not provide better night time visibility which of course is why people switch out the halogen bulbs in the first place

    Nice work, I'm no longer intimidated to do this myself. I'm lucky to work 5 min away from AO. Interesting the coil over is added support and the front leaf remains in place.

      Awesome and Thank You!, and lucky you having them so close, yes the front transverse leaf still does the lions share of the work, but having the coil over makes such a difference. Everything is doable if you take your time!

    I came across your site channel by doing a Google search for installing a RV plug in a minivan. It only came up with installing in a van, so I picked your site. A little background. A few years ago I bought a 2012 Dodge 2012 grand caravan SXT from an old woman. Speculation on my part. She had a husband that did all the so call manly stuff and knew only enough to put gas in the car and go. The minivan had some issues. Need a new TIPM new battery new alternator. These models have a TIPM that is used in other makers cars over the years. It's design is flawed. These in particular have a need for a bypass that was developed by a company other than the maker. I decided to make my own bypass. I am experienced in electronic and electrical applications. Long story short. I decided to turn the Grand Caravan into a camper. It gets great fuel mpg 28 mpg on hwy and sucked in local mpg. About 17 mpg. I need a RV plug on the passenger side of the minivan. I guess I could put in on driver side but I have a tire tools in a side compartment for that purpose, so that really leaves passenger side. To my knowledge from looks of the back panel the is a panel with vent lovours made in the plastic of panel. My idea has been to install solar panel on roof, 4 100 ah batteries, charge controller 70 amp mppt Renogy DC to DC 2000 watt pure sine wave C to AC inverter which has 3 power 120v AC sockets. Then install a DC to AC converter charger to hook my 4250/3500 wat portable generator to. But in cold weather I need the rear door closed. So, the idea hit me to install an RV socket on the minivan. I took out all the seats and there is about a 3ft carpeted pan in place where seats were. My idea is install everything in the back far enough I can place my induction stove top to cook on. I have 3 300 watt mini crystal solar panel. I was intend to install one on the roof and make suitcase fold out with the other two and hook them up when sitting at camping/ fishing spot. Then when I am not in the minivan take it all down, stow it inside with generator and go about fishing hiking or in town shopping gym etc. Thank you for the video. Helps out.

      I just took a piece of 18 gage steel leftover from a sheet i had bought at home depot, cut it with a jig saw with a metal blade to 6 x 8. Then just took a 2x4 and put it and the metal in a vice and bent over with a hammer, left me with a 6x6inch face to mount the power switch and a 2x8 inch face to mount to the engine bay wall. Super simple and cheep

    The roof of my tv is 9 feet in the air. How do I take the magnet off the side of my tv van.

    • @ramblingambition
      @ramblingambition Місяць тому

      I would just lower the ladder to below the magnet, climb and pull off, the goal of the magnet base is to keep the ladder in place while getting to the roof, so ladder stays in place if you just climbing to retrieve the magnet it should be fine, you also can always leave it in place

    Only issue is you cant swing the door fully open to 270º. Which is super nice and really gives better visibility. I guess with your boxes on the back you couldnt anyway…. But I would really miss being able to get the doors as open as I do.

    Been waiting for someone to post this upgrade. been considering doing it on my rig for a while. Thanks for the explainer. Curious - How are you lifting the van on top the jacks. I know for my model the rear axle cannot be jacked at all. Have seen shops jack the rear shock - p[ace on jack, depress jack and then jack under the axle to sup[port it being weightless? Would love some more info. Nice work!

    • @ramblingambition
      @ramblingambition Місяць тому

      Thanks I appreciate it, so for jacking for the suspension changes, if you look at the rear leaf spring hanger closest to the bumper there is a large structure that forms the spring pocket, i took a length of 4x4 and a floor jack on each side and jacked the van up that way the placed jackstands on the hitch to support the weight of the van and stabilize it because there is quite a bit of side loading when messing with the springs then took a floor jack under the axle being super careful of the diff cover and used the jack to support the axle while doing the lead spring work. Hope that helps you some

    hi Dan, what spec are those AO RIP kit for your 2wd 170? I just had 5400lbs leaf springs w/ 200 coil springs installed at a shop. Feels stiff and heavy from the hefty leaf springs. Did not improve my ride. It is mostly empty though, building it out now. thanks

    • @ramblingambition

      I am not sure what the coil spring rate is, i also did the 5400lb springs, but that was done after the build out and a scale weight to make sure the spring rate was good and the front bilstein coils were matched by AO to pair with the rear springs. I can imagine empty or barely built it would definitely ride harsh, it will make a huge difference once its built out especially in the sway category

    • @rod8073
      @rod8073 2 місяці тому

      @ Nice. I’ve been watching van builds for years and DC/DC was run directly from the battery. Now I see the it run from under the drivers seat. I don’t know why. As my first build, before removing the seat and running wires I’d like to know why.

    • @ramblingambition
      @ramblingambition 2 місяці тому

      @rod8073 so the principle reason for battery direct is thats the easiest way to get power out of it as the alternator is providing current while the engine is running, depending on the manufacturer of the van will determine what the battery access looks like and what their power distribution system looks like and how available it is to connect to. In the case of the sprinter the battery compartment is super tight and not necessarily conducive to adding a 2 gauge wire to flow to the dc/dc. So under the seat power distribution give a factory power post that is fusible directly at the power source and makes things nice and neat, but it is a pain to get everything apart and in the case of the 2023’s and up sprinters unless you have the buss bar plate addition you to activate the two aux posts there is no connection point except the main power feed into the distribution block

    • @ramblingambition
      @ramblingambition 3 місяці тому

      I did, in my old van there was a terminal underneath the van where i connected my power post for my accessories and extra fused terminals in the main fuse block under the drivers seat, in 2024 they got rid of the aux battery post under the van and all of the fused locations are taken, there are two available posts in the main panel but the bridge plate to electrify the circuits is not present, so i connected a 1/0 cable to the main power feed into the distribution box under the drivers seat and ran power post and connected the dc to dc charger to that with a battery switch and fuse! They did not make it easy!

    The floor looks nice. I plan on using lonseal in the garage and vinyl planks in the galley as I’m putting a heated film underneath. I used the original floor with just kilmat and TAI1547 3M thinsulate under it to save head room. I see you raised your floor an inch but at 6’9 you have to bend over anyway. 😂 I’m 6’3 so I can benefit from not raising the floor. To save space on the ceiling, I’m putting the furring strips on the side of the roof beams using riv nuts in the small holes on top next to the beams. Good job.

    • @ramblingambition
      @ramblingambition 3 місяці тому

      Thanks, the lonseal is certainly a popular option and it looks good to, and yes being a giant is a challenge in a van, so since i have to bend down everything is a compromise so the emphasis is all placed on function, our old van had the same floor height and it worked fine, i am used to ducking my head. I played around with some of the 12v heating film and ultimately chose to exclude it, i wanted to do the hydronic flooring and heat but the cost and system maintenance/complexity just was more than I wanted to deal with especially given the diesel heater I had in my old van keep us warm with no issues and will be the same heater we are installing in this van!

    • @rod8073
      @rod8073 3 місяці тому

      @ I agree! The hydronic floor is way over priced! It also uses a diesel heater in the system. I’m getting an espar heater myself. I hope it fits in the seat pedestal. It’s way short as I ordered swivel seats. So far I hear they fit. Guess I’ll find out. 😁

    • @ramblingambition
      @ramblingambition 3 місяці тому

      @rod8073 we bought the espar heater as well, in my old van it is installed under the passenger seat base and there is plenty of room for the shorter base for everything to fit, we are putting this one in the base of our electrical cabinet more in the center of the van to help with some of the cold spots especially since this van is the extended 170

    • @ramblingambition
      @ramblingambition 3 місяці тому

      @rod8073 we are not, again as a giant, haha, its just not practical, everyone i know that has one hates it because its so tight and usually uses it once or twice then it becomes storage, plus it takes up so much room, adds a ton of humidity into the van, is another system to maintain and we are prioritizing sitting and remote working space, we will have an outside shower set up from the rear of the van for non winter time fun, during the winter there is planet fitness memberships which are pretty much anywhere and super cheap, plus as we traveled the country camping out of our jeep in our early overlanding years getting a shower is not super hard and in fact its a great break to take a real shower, just our perspective, you have precious square feet in the van and we just want more function is all

    You do such a great job explaining everything and by you doing this stuff with basic tools in your driveway, it gives people the confidence that they can do these things themselves and save a little money. I’m curious, did the spring addition in the back and this extra shock up front provide any additional ride height?

    • @ramblingambition
      @ramblingambition 3 місяці тому

      @randerson4383 thank you so much for the comment, I enjoy making the videos with the hope that it helps someone tackle their own project. As to the lift the springs gave about an inch of lift in the rear, the true benefit will be as we load up the van that progressive pack will help take the weight without sagging as much. On the front there is really no change, the shock up front just helps with dampening and sway which is greatly needed on these vans, there will be some natural lift up front as the weight balance shifts to the rear as we build out the van but if I do my job right it should be 1/2 or less up front
