What's Up With All the Coups in Africa?
In this building, on July 27th 2023, Vladimir Putin gathered representatives from 49 African countries for the 3rd Russia Africa Summit. A lot of the top power brokers in Africa were in this building on that day. But one important country was missing.
Just as Vladimir Putin told the attendants that “The African continent is emerging as a new center of power right before our eyes.” 8000km away in the heart of the Sahel, members of Niger's presidential guard overthrew the democratically elected president, Mohamed Bazoum.
And as the coup unfolded, something strange happened.
A bunch of the citizens came out to show their support for the army. But they also had these Russian flags. And signs like this. Here is an eerily similar scene in neighboring Mali. And another in Burkina Faso from the year before.
Now there is a stretch of Kremlin linked regimes across the entire Sahel.

Why Africa's Largest City is a Terrible Place to Live
Переглядів 386 тис.3 місяці тому
The largest gathering of people on the African continent is on this patchwork of islands and peninsulas on the coast of the gulf of guinea..Lagos. It’s one of the 20 largest cities cities in the world. But it’s also the second worst city to live in, only doing better than the capital of Syria, which is in the middle of a civil war. And a big part of WHY, has to do with its geography and it’s ea...
How One Word Could Send Nigeria into Crisis
Переглядів 4,5 тис.Рік тому
There’s a word in Nigeria’s constitution that could mean the country doesn’t have a legitimate president. It's about how imperfect democracy really works and elections and power. Music Tom Fox - ua-cam.com/channels/LB2sZa0kqPmkw2Bes59ePA.html
Why Nigeria's Biggest Phone Company Wants to Be a Bank

MTN received a license from the Central bank of Nigeria to operate a mobile money service, which has everyone wondering if they can INSTANTLY convert their 75 million subscribers in Nigeria to mobile money customers and dominate the payments industry with the same level of success achieved in its mobile telephony business. Given that Nigeria has 190 million mobile subscribers but only 54 millio...
How to Buy a Failing Bank in Africa (and get rich)
Переглядів 1,7 тис.2 роки тому
In 2001, Two 35 year-old executives, Herbert Wigwe and Aigboje 'Aig' Imoukhuede, convinced their friends and family to put down their homes, properties, and life savings as collateral to finance the acquisition of a failing regional bank that was in trouble with the regulator. Today it has become the largest bank in Nigeria by assets and the largest bank in Africa by customer base with over 30 ...

@cascade Respectfully, You are wrong about the History of Lagos. Please do not distort history. The Aworis did not come from Ife, and Ife was not the homeland of Yoruba people. This manufactured assertion is been forced on the Ijebus, Egbas, Aworis, Ondo, and so on. Do you know that the Aworis speak a dialect of mixture of Edo and Awori? There was no such thing as the Yoruba then. Yoruba is slur given to these people by the Hausas. Also, you conveniently omitted the fact that The Benin Kingdom founded Lagos and named it Eko. The first Oba of Lagos was King Ado, an edo prince and the son of Oba of Benin. History do not care about your population or tribal biases. History is sacrosanct. The Benins founded Eko, and the Aworis from the far in-land came and traded with the Benins. They were taxed and forwarded all the proceeds to Benin City. Please go back and read or get schooled on this topic from the owners of Lagos. When the Portuguese first arrived in this part of the world, the first people they encounter were the Benin people. The Oba of Lagos is descendant of the Benin people and that bloodline and lineage remains till this present day with Oba of Lagos. The Erelu Kuti of Lagos expanded on this on so many interviews. Lagos is an extension of Benin Kingdom. People like you are trying to twist and erase history that is well documented. The Benin did not invade that land, they founded it and named it Eko. The original owners of Lagos are the Benins (Edos) and the Aworis. They are the indigenous people of Lagos. It is sad that Obasanjo erased history from Nigeria school curriculum to suppress the true history of Nigeria. Thank God these things are well documented. Please do not be tribal when reporting on history. The present Oba of Lagos is direct descendant of the Benin Kingdom. Go ask them in the palace in Lagos.

i feel like the saddest thing about a lot of large African cities, Lagos included, that is immediately apparent just from looking at them on street view, is the number of giant, American-style suburban homes with gated walls around them directly fronted by unpaved and horribly managed streets. it seems to make it clear that the problem with countries like Nigeria now isn't even that they are poor, because it is clear that there are a lot of wealthy people and obviously a large GDP. Its that they have been forced, either by international business or by their own governments, to adopt a hyper-capitalist system that causes disgusting wealth disparity and very little investment in the public good. The fact that people can have so much wealth that they build a walled compound in the middle of a city with unpaved roads, spotty trash collection, and almost no metro line, is absolutely criminal.
