Best version of this. Debbie could sing, unlike Raquel or Betty Bacall.

I saw this with the three incarnations on Broadway (Lauren, Raquel and Debbie) and, in my opinion the best was the original. My reasoning is that Lauren Bacall understood how to feed the lines so that the comedian (Marilyn) got the bulk of the laughs. Raquel just seemed to sing the notes and Debbie (inadvertently) tried to be on a par with Marilyn. I think the same is happening here as did with Raquel - Barbara doesn't feed the lines properly in the song PLUS the difference in octaves is jarring. I have LOVED this duet from the moment I heard (saw) it but I do have to say, in my humble opinion, that the magic between Lauren and Marilyn was never recaptured

I have listened to Jill O’Hara, Betty Buckley and Kristen Chenoweth sing this song. All are phenomenal! But if you ask me to pick one Jill wins - her performance is so real.

Today, she probably wouldn't be replaced. Times have changed, musicals have more flexibility in the demands. This is a charming performance by a young character actor, and the song is delivered with the character's distinctive colloquial voice. But the show had opera singers as its narrator-esque frame, and the powers that be, including the composer, probably wanted this late number to land with musical brio. The number became a showstopper with Bartlett, and we certainly don't wish to retroactively deny her the moment (I saw her, wonderful.) But it's sad, because you hear a talented young woman here anyway.

I saw Martha Raye's Dolly, at the St. James, a Saturday matinee. She was great fun and NO ONE ever sang the role as powerfully. I may be wrong, but it seemed to me they picked up some of the tempos for her?

Johnny Desmond loathed working with Mimi Hines. They had a very public outburst on stage towards the end of the run of the show. He famously said he would have knocked her in her teeth but it would have spoiled her only talent.

Burt Bacharach gave us a musical masterpiece, that in fact paved the road for Company. I love Stephan’s show especially the OBC, but cmon! London won’t even bring it back. The London Philharmonic gave respect with recording the Overture and title song. I wish they would just put on the tire production. Like the New York Philharmonic did for Company.

Poignant, not the least so because this was her last Broadway role. When this was recorded, she had been thrilling Broadway audiences since 1930, for forty years. And whatever time's depredations, she still lands with a Mermanesque bang on that final note. Still thrilling!

I had never heard this song until today since it was not in the movie. Ethel Merman's enchanting voice is so stirring, and her soliloquy with her dead husband is so believable the way that persons later in life might think about needing some new thrill in their life!

First B'way show to have a mixing board in the back of the house, thanks to Mr. Bacharach. Drums baffled for the first time, thanks to Mr. Bacharach. Just good clean sound, not over-the-top, and nothing today sounds this good. I used to stand outside the Shubert on matinee days just to hear the overture. I also saw the show five times, three during its intiial three weeks.

We are lucky to have four of the songs merman sang in PANAMA HATTIE recorded by Decca. But how great would it have been if they had already begun the tradition of recording complete shows. This song is a gem! It’s neat th at merman sang a bit of this in the Steve and Eydie Cole Porter special.
