Awesome
Hello, how are you, Master ! One question: what mouthpiece do you normally use? I see that you play with a GR and if so, what size is it? Thanks for your reply. Greetings from Mexico!
What’s the best practice mute you have used?
Hey Carlos, hope you’re doing great! Thanks so much for reaching out. I absolutely recommend the Cookie Mute-it’s essentially www.cookiesmusic.com/cookiemute and Murph Cup Mute combined when you push it all the way in. It’s a fantastic practice mute! www.merfmute.com/thecupmute I personally use both of these for different events, warm-ups, and to get a great feel for the chops. Highly recommend checking it out!
Bravo! Outstanding! 🎺👍
Don't the mutes also change the intonation differently based on what part of the trumpet's range you play?
Yes, trumpet mutes can indeed affect intonation differently depending on the range in which you’re playing. Each type of mute impacts the pitch and resonance in its own way, and the degree of pitch adjustment can vary between low, middle, and high registers. Here’s a quick breakdown: 1. Straight Mute • Low Range: Often tends to make notes slightly flat due to added resistance. • Middle Range: May stay closer to in tune, though some players notice slight sharpness, especially on louder dynamics. • High Range: Tends to push the pitch slightly sharp as players compensate for resistance by increasing air pressure, which affects upper pitches more. 2. Cup Mute • Low Range: Frequently causes a flat tendency, especially on lower notes where the cup interferes with airflow. • Middle Range: Generally stable, though slight flatness can be heard on sustained notes. • High Range: This can cause slight sharpness, as players often push more air to get a full sound in higher notes, leading to pitch rise. 3. Harmon Mute with stem. • Low Range: Typically goes sharp, as the closed design affects resonance in lower frequencies. • Middle Range: Tends to have a minimal impact here but can lean slightly flat if the mute is too far in the bell. • High Range: Can vary, often sharp if players force air to project; opening the stem affects this further. 4. Plunger Mute • Low Range: Often produces a flat sound since it interferes significantly with airflow. • Middle Range: Usually stays stable in pitch, though intonation can depend on hand positioning. • High Range: Can go sharp or flat depending on how tightly the mute is held to the bell and the force of airflow. 5. Bucket Mute • Low Range: Generally flat, as the soft material dampens lower frequencies. • Middle Range: Slightly flat, though more stable; the tone is rounded off but pitch is less affected here. • High Range: Slight tendency to sharpness, as players push more air to compensate for the reduced volume. 6. Practice Mute • All Ranges: Usually causes the trumpet to go sharp across the board, especially in high notes, due to extreme resistance. Practice mutes are designed to minimize sound output, which dramatically affects intonation. Summary So yes, the mute’s effect on intonation can vary significantly by range, with lower notes generally leaning flat (except for Harmon mutes), and higher notes often leaning sharp due to the extra air pressure many players use to counteract mute resistance. Fine-tuning intonation with slides, embouchure adjustments, or even slight mute adjustments can help manage these changes.
@@harrissonballoh wow thx
Wait what? I was always told to leave a 1cm gap between bell and cup while using the cup mute???
Hey, @timmaths for Cup mutes, the optimal distance from the trumpet bell typically depends on the mute design, the bell flare of your trumpet and the specific sound you’re aiming for. However, a general guideline is: 1. 0.4 to 1 cm away from the bell: This spacing usually gives a balanced mix of tone, projection, and stable intonation. 2. Fine-tune by ear: Because every mute and trumpet combination is unique, use your ear to adjust the distance slightly forward or back. Listen for a resonant sound without sacrificing intonation. If your mute doesn’t allow for adjustment, try shaving down the corks as needed to achieve this distance for a more optimal tone and intonation.

What the heck how you doing that
Thanks for tips bro🎺🎺
Tea is done.
Tongue arch has ZERO causal effect of the pitch played . Only the lip posture controls pitch by increased firmness to ascend. Tongue movements accompany this action for most, and that has nothing to do with playing but yet native mouth function. Allowing the tongue to move should not be discouraged, but it is in no way the cause of high tones by some "air speed" concept.
Damn! No way!! Most trumpet masters preach tongue arch!
@da11king I teach arch, too. But I don't teach the accompanying popular but mythical air mechanics. Its lip posture that directly determines the pitch.
What mouthpiece and horn do you play on?
