I bought one cheapest version of different 12 years Chivas in Scotland 🙂‍↕️ just because I remember in my teens all talking about it, so the idea was to try some Chivas. And result - for 21£ it is fine, but I would add more and buy some single malt Talisker instead.

First!

J&B is one of my favorites. People seem to either love it or hate it. I like its “smoke and funk” flavor. It’s delicious to me. I also like to keep smelling it as I drink it. It gives off a scotch profile that tastes classic….like it’s how people liked scotch in the late 1800s early 1900s. Great experience for the price.

Don’t know where you are but in Ontario it is available for less than $40 Cdn right now

I love J&B, it was first introduced to me via all those 1970s eurocrime movies where they'd always drink it. I like it, I don't understand the hate it gets from some reviewers.

I will have to look for this one. I must say if it is blended with a good amount of Glenfiddich I shouldn't be surprised it would turn out both well rounded yet not with anything to jump out at you. That is Glenfiddich in a nutshell. I love Glenfiddich but around here it has priced itself out of what I am willing to pay for what it delivers. Grants Family Reserve is easy to find and very affordable so I am hoping the local bottle shop will get Clan MaGregor, sometime.

Love this scotch! I don’t buy it more because I’m too stuck in the mid-shelf…but it’s one I used to have all the time and would never turn it down. A fantastic blend….you can get it for $17 a handle here in Texas.

Great review! I do like this slightly more than Teachers and White Horse. White Horse is good, but I think I’ve overrated it in the past. Never tried Islay mist. I will say Teacher’s is still pound for pound the best, but it’s far for me to get….so the famous grouse smoky black is my go-to.

I just bought a bottle of the chivas for $27 per tax, it's one of my go to blends along with Old Parr 12, I do buy the 15 year old chivas on occasion for around $43-45and really like it, Cheers

Agreed on Chivas being overpriced. In my college days many decades ago it was cheap bottom shelf but they are a victim of marketing trying to sell the whisky as better quality than it is. They have even gotten into the varieties game with Thirteen Year Olds as well as others. None remotely worth the price asked for these days.

As a novice you have given me the next scotch I'll purchase, I doubt I could be disappointed based upon your review. I guess I'll step up from the bottom shelf with this one. LOL.

J&B is one of the gems among blends. It is a great price, has been made consistent in taste and nose for decades, and hasn't been hyped to death by marketing to try to justify a climbing price. Terrific dram year round.

Being a fan of Jewish rye bread, this may be worth a dram (or more).

Agreed, Imperial is a rough beast. Even cheap things like John Barr Red Label or Black and White would curb stomp Imperial.

Great stuff in my books when I want a glass and a movie. Cutty Sark Prohibition is also great value for money should you come across it.

Thank-you for the excellent/well-considered review. Had never heard of Hunting Lodge either until spotting 750ml glass bottle (3 year) on shelf at local store earlier this week at reasonable price. Just trying it tonight for the first time poured over ice cubes. Very pleased with the smooth taste and will buy again.
