Join my upcoming beginners memoir class: Soul of Your Story: A Five Week Memoir Writing Immersion
please spend a few minutes listening to my little talk about my memoir 101 class called The Soul of Your Story. I believe I have an effective, unique way of teaching memoir writing that will get you over the hump of self-doubt and help you finally write, finish, and put your story into the world.
No, it won't eliminate the hard work required. But it will give you a path forward to "done" that you can lean into. Enough chatter. Have a listen to my point of view on teaching memoir and decide for yourself.

About Brad's Memoir:
This powerful memoir shares an adventure journalist’s story of a decade-long, round-the-world quest to overcome his drug addiction and to understand and heal from past traumas.
Suffering from PTSD and severe depression from past trauma, battling an addiction to overprescribed psychiatric medication, and at the rock bottom of his career, journalist Brad Wetzler had nowhere to go. So he set out on a journey to wander and hopefully find himself-and the world-again.
Into the Soul of the World is Wetzler’s thrilling, impactful, and heartrending memoir of healing-physically, emotionally, and spiritually. An adventure journalist at heart, Wetzler mixes travelogue with empowering insights about his inner journey to better care for his own mental health. Journey with him as he travels across Israel and the West Bank, before moving on to India, a candle-lit cave on a mountaintop in the Himalayan foothills, and a life-changing encounter with a 100-year-old yogi.
Wetzler's writing is full of the poignant, amusing, and occasionally heart‑breaking situations that unfold when we finally decide to confront depression (or any mental health struggle) and declare ourselves ready to heal: How do we heal our past and thrive again? What does it mean to live a good life? How can we transform our suffering and serve others? His answer: live to tell the story and find the humility and courage to be the best human you can be.
About Brad:
Brad Wetzler began his writing and publishing career serving as an editor at Outside magazine, where he worked with some of America’s finest nonfiction writers. He later turned in his editor’s pen for a writer’s and traveled the world writing about adventure and exploration, business, politics, the environment, sports, and wellness. In midlife, after recovering from a long, debilitating depression, he became a certified yoga teacher and began exploring and writing about our inner landscape: psychology, spirituality, meditation, and yoga.
Brad holds a masters’ degree in journalism from Northwestern University. He is a book editor and writing coach. His memoir Into the Soul of the World was published by Hachette Book Group in March, 2023. He lives in Austin, Texas. Learn more about Brad at www.bradwetzler.com.

Wow!!! Youre Talking about stories others tell about us and its hitting home!!! I’ve had deep revelations about the subject… And what you just said… Usually, it’s the most sensitive person in the family who takes on their projections…Wow!!! This is powerful… And this one thing that you have brought to light right now… Which I have, as I said, had deep revelations about I feel like I need to bring more of this piece out in my memoir… Because it created the person that I was during that season!!! Thank you so much!!!

Your UA-cam channel and video content are very good. Also, the thumbnail design is very attractive. But here are some problems: Your UA-cam videos are not properly SEO. UA-cam video SEO score is very low. Not title - description - tag are SEO friendly Not sharing on social media platforms and your UA-cam channel is a lot of trouble As a result views, likes, comments and subscribers are not increasing.

I was on here looking for Kathy O'brien's book on writing through ptsd. I was writing my health offer, working on it from a book I been trying to write. I build an AI Assistant to help me. My journey has so many deep dark valleys. Two months ago I was chewing at the low spots kind of prioritizing the lowest spots and how to tie it all together. Next thing you know my chest tightens up, I hear a shreck inside, I crawled inside my self, been two months, longest I've been without shaving in decades. Longing, is a good one. Belonging is one for me. There is a book, Lost Connections by Hari. Nice to meet you.

I have a story... kinda little apprehensive in getting it out in some ways. You know the typical abuse, lies, traumas. Actually two types of fears stopping is pretty much where I'm at... fear of the establishment, and fear of people thinking I'm some kind of wake job. It's been a long interesting ride. Finding self, and staying alive in a techno-monic terra forming, transhumanistic messed up world, while keeping some compassion.

Brad thank you so much for saying procrastination is a norm for many writers. It lifts a lot of self-criticism! I'm great at planning - I have a huge storyboard with the 10 chapters and post it notes for each of the 48 scenes that shape my memoir. I've now written half of my memoir (I won't tell you how long that has taken me). However, I have recently started using 2 similar strategies to those you offer here. And they are beginning to work for me. In the past, I think I overwhelmed myself with the grand plans for the day. Now, I do find focusing on what you call, "the next right thing" (love your addition of "right") truly helps. Choosing something small to get me to sit down and start writing is magical. I also like your, "aim for 80%." I call that "don't worry it's just a draft." Once I start I can easily keep going for hours. Thanks again.

Hi Audrey, I'm glad the video helped some! Absolutely, every writer I know procrastinates. It's just being human to procrastinate. AND--we can do this hard work with a combination of self-compassion and gentle nudging ourselves to ego the next right thing... over and over. The older I get the less I believe in those "habits" self-help books. I believe we emerge naturally from underneath our doubts when we stop being a strict task master to ourselves. At the same time, we can't always let ourselves off the hook! This might sound woo-woo, but we creatives need "motherly" self-kindness and "fatherly" self-encouragement and self-nudging to do the hard things.

...nice video! Is the following small excerpt any good? Leaving Kenya wasn’t easy. Fortunately, there was more work to be done, a reason to return. As the plane gained altitude, buildings disappeared and the rugged landscape came clearly into focus. Kenya was a wild thing, strong and free. Mountains in the west seemed to rise with the plane to say farewell. Likewise the network of rivers etched into the landscape revealed themselves like a giant treasure map as the morning’s mist burned off, but Kenya was more than the sum of its parts. Neither earth nor water had beckoned Sherry from across the ocean. The needs of Kenya’s people, her brothers and sisters in Christ, had been her calling, and now through tear clouded eyes she looked out the plane’s window and longed for the smiling faces of the children she had fallen in love with. Now the village had a fully functioning health care clinic, but there was more work to be done. Sherry wiped her eyes and forced a smile. She would come back…some day.
