Miles Jam #23 | Roland Aira Compact J-6 Chord + Zoom MS-70CDR | #DAWless #AmbientJam
Hey, it's been a while! As mentioned in the previous jam and the previous community post, my computer "exploded". Getting a new one up and running has been a hassle - and expensive. But I'm here! ✨ With a cool new Windows 11 compatible computer. (My old one wasn't.)
I'm still setting things up. Slowly catching up with reality and with my backlog. Hoping to get back to my regular one-jam-a-week schedule, and eventually do some more hardware review videos.
I also have a Ko-fi for anyone wanting to show some support, to help cover computer costs and potential new hardware (i.e. synths and pedals): ko-fi.com/milesjams
Of course only give if you're comfortably able to do so. Being allowed to share in your day for just a few minutes with some music is already enough. 🙏
This week has been a rough one for us all as we've been confronted by a devastating lack of empathy and justice in the world, and a further acceleration towards hate and greed that will threaten our future quality of life. So here is a simple, basic, but hopefully soothing ambient jam, using the Roland Aira Compact J-6 Chord combined with the Zoom MS-70CDR. Maybe it can help calm some frayed nerves.
Genres: ambient, drone, experimental, IDM.
Recorded 2024-11-07 at 17 : 57.

Was tempted to call this piece "farewell", both due to its somber sound and the fact that I don't know when I'll be able to post more jams. My computer died last weekend, and I'm trying to sort out a solution. But computers are complicated and expensive. This was the last jam I recorded, which I just managed to retrieve from my hard drive after acquiring a hard drive docking bay. (Another expen...

Hey, it's my first gear review! Going over some of the basics and giving my thoughts on the Korg Volca Drum mini-synthesizer. This is mainly aimed at fellow "novices" like myself who get confused by the jargon and don't have dozens of years of experience with synth gear. Constructive feedback is much welcome! Stunning. Great work!
Aw, thank you! ❤
Awesome!! Congrats. Which J-6 sounds are you using?
👽✨🌎🌺
J'adore
Merci! ❤
❤ très intéressant comme ambiance sonore
The video is great, you need to keep promoting your channel. Is not hard.
great atmosphere! can you upload a tutorial explaining how you designed those sounds and sequences?
Thank you! ❤ And afraid not, since these jams are mostly improvised. I could get better at including the effects chain for the Multistomp in the descriptions though.
Really nice! Is it the Volca Drum that makes those granular sounds?
Thank you! ❤ And yes, the Volca Drum going through the Zoom Multistomp.
❤🎉
Can it provide 3/4 rithms or only 4/4?
I think so, in theory, but I haven't been able to figure it out myself. But you can adjust the swing, and de-activate steps in the sequencer. Tony Horgan shows how to get a 6/8 rhythm here: ua-cam.com/video/9HPJxmVxu-8/v-deo.html
good one, i like it!
Thank you, appreciate it!
vocal sample was too much but fun to watch
Thank you for the feedback! In retrospect, should've used it more sparingly (i.e. not had it blasting almost continuously). Easy to get wrapped up and zone out when you're jamming and excited. Maybe I'll try re-doing it sometime.
@@MilesJams keep doing your thing, i liked the vibe!
Snake Plissken isn't dead by the way.
Very nice
Wow, this is very intresting) You're amazing)
Aw, thank you, glad you like it. ❤

great noise! 😉is the ms-cdr70 on both or just the sample2 🤔
Thank you! It's on both, but in another recent jam (#19) it was only on the Sample.
John Connor I need Your Multistomp & lighting ))
Come with me if you want to jam.
Dope
V-Drum Beast in a Box 🎉 ❤
It stays in your head. Would you share the effect chain from the MS? Or is it just the random filter?
Thank you, glad you like it! ❤ I think I used the following effects chain: Particle Reverb, Random Filter, Seq Filter, Filter Delay, Monosynth. Play around with it, it's a lot of fun! Keep the volume low though, as it can easily peak.
Nice 👍and cool setup 😎
Thank you! ❤
good combo... nice sounds👍😊
This is what I love about the humble little Volca Drum, it can get well away from the dreaded techno box sounds and into some real spaces. Your the first person I've come across doing something interesting with it. Well done and thanks.
Thank you! ❤ There are others out there (and of course more videos on my channel), but I guess most purely use it as a, well, drum machine. I do love how versatile and weird it is.
Very nice! : ) Can you share the presets for the second part of the video? Sounds really interesting!
Thank you! ❤ I think this is where I tried out the presets from this video, you can check the comments/descriptions there: ua-cam.com/video/SA8DZTdPx-A/v-deo.html
good vid. Drum is the best...well, drum machine of the Volca series IMO. Beats is way too limited. and Kick is even more so. i use Drum mostly for high hat and it's splicing feature. but i know you can probably get great snare from it. but, like you, i don't mess with the sound design too much.
Thank you! ❤ I'm guessing you mean slicing, and not splicing? It definitely seems like the most versatile Volca drum machine, and I'm guessing it would compare favorably to other non-Korg drum machines at a similar price range.
@@MilesJams ha yeah slicing. and yeah, for my money agreed. Sample is pretty great too as a Volca.
It's just non sense call it a drum machine!😂 Capable of so many things.. Thanks for sharing!
Wow best gift ever! Volca Drum is one of my favourite piece of gear ever consider that I have two eheh!😅 She provides almost endless sonic possibilities! You can even lock step jumps!
It's good gear, and was a very good gift. 👍 Is lock step jumps different from the normal step jump feature?
@@MilesJams Sorry if I'm late With the regular step jump function you can lock a step momentarily while with locked step jump you can release step jump button when the selected palying step will be play indefinitely until you press any other button
@@hellf.o Sweet, I didn't know you could lock it like that! Will have to look into that, thank you. Leads to some new possibilities.
Nice gloves!
Great job on the video! 'w' Can't wait to see more gear reviews in the future! x3
Thank you, hon! 😽
Very nice showcase of the kinds of sounds and variety it has. Makes me wanna experiment more with mine! :D
You should! It's a lot of fun to experiment with. If nothing else, you can just keep using the randomize functions until you hit gold. 🥇
its quite peculiar, but it has these sounds that nicely punch through a mix and add excitement imho, so for me its more a percussion element. that and the simple sine drums punch so hard...useful for that "in your face" punch :)
Interestingly, another user recently commented (on one of the my jam videos) that the drums on the drum were too weak, and didn't work well in mixes with other volca units... ! Seemed to be because it's digital, and not analog. I don't have enough experience to tell the difference, but I like it a lot - peculiarities and all.
@@MilesJamsi think on their own as an only drum machine i kinda agree. Its not versatile enough. I mean if it works for your music cool, but in general no. But as an additional percussive element its gold imho
its a drum synth, not a "normal" drum machine, so you should be familiar with synths, but sure, more knobs always helps :)
When in doubt, add more knobs! Thank you for pointing it out, hadn't even considered the difference; it's a li'l machine that is made to make drum sounds ergo "drum machine", had been my thinking.
great video! love the drum. and love your other jams with it. (but whats up with the gloves?? cant look away… )
Gotta fancy it up when doing a proper review video. 🥂 Sorry you found the gloves distracting, but glad you liked the video (and the drum)!
Good video 👍the volca drum is so much fun and there is so much to find... 👍😎
Thank you! ❤ For sure. It's definitely a synth you can grow with, starting with the simple basics but gradually discovering new sounds and settings (and knobs).
@@MilesJams have fun, I started with the RD-6. But the sounds limited, although very clean. The drum gives me much more options... I like the Choke and Randomize functions... 😎👍
The drum is the least Volca sounding of the Volca’s IMHO, had o e and found it a bit lightweight sounding and didn’t fit in the mix amongst other volcas.
Sorry to hear that! I don't own enough Volcas to tell. Guessing the sound isn't sufficiently "big" or "punchy" when put next to the others?
@@MilesJams absolutely, it needs to go through some sort of analogue filter or distortion to really make it less ‘digital’
very creative! good job!
Thank you! ❤️
Cool... Sounds very interesting. Volca Drum loves to let you find crazy new sounds 😎👍
For sure! Sounds almost retro-futuristic at times.
Very interesting sound design, I like it~
Thank you, glad you like it!
Yeah bro
😎🤟
Congrats👍😊 nice idea with the Mix. Keep on... 😎👍💯
Thank you! 💪
Felicidades, a por 200 🎶🎵
I love it. I could play harmonic drum along that! Good contrast between indus background and dreamy drums like handpan.
Thank you! ❤ I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. If you do use it for any jamming of your own, I'd love to hear it!
@@MilesJams do you have a tik tok account?
I always appreciate when someone outputs work with the equipment I already have. That's 2-for-1 deal. I get to listen to something I like AND it motivates me to create my own compositions. Thanks! 🙂 👍
Aw, you're welcome! ❤ Have fun creating and experimenting.
❤
❤
nice one!!
Thank you! ❤️
inspiring the lot out of me!
Thank you! Comments like this mean a lot, if I'm able to inspire others creatively. ❤
Very interesting use of one instrument and one effect! This brought to my mind cyberpunk mega cities and dystopias like portrayed in Akira and Ghost in the Shell, this style would really fit on some such soundtrack.
Thank you! Definitely wouldn't mind contributing to a dystopian sci-fi soundtrack one day, if given the opportunity. ❤ There are actually multiple effects being utilized on the Zoom MS-70CDR, but only one can be shown on the screen at a time. Would be neat if the whole chain could be shown.
Awesome atmosphere.
Thank you! ♥
Interesting rhythms on this one
Thank you! ❤
