Clarifying Your Own Space To Help A Dull Horse

These types of horses need to feel us and sense our energy and presence outside of ourselves in order to feel at peace in their world. What is your recommendation for the average horse - a single jointed loose ring snaffle? Or please advise ... I had always been told 'as above BUT with double joint, for example a French link' ... due to single joint causing 'nut cracker' action[?] From Aotearoa NZ

    • @JoshNicholAHorsemansPursuit
      @JoshNicholAHorsemansPursuit Місяць тому

      Thanks for your question! In my opinion, the only way a single joined snaffle becomes a nut cracker is if you pull on both reins! A single joined snaffle is to be used more with one hand then two and allows for a little more room for error laterally in a horses mouth. A french link is when you begin to pick up both reins, which allows it to flow through the mouth a little more. Every bit can be used poorly but should not be judged by its poor use or poor handling! Always look to someone that knows how to use a piece of equipment to get the best information about the things to do and not do! Then use it appropriately! Great question!

    Thank you so much for sharing this video! This has to be the best video on separation anxiety on UA-cam. Such a gentle and effective approach! I tried this with my horse today in the stable, and I was blown away by how well it worked. How would you use this approach outside of an enclosed space? For example, if the only way to take a horse with separation anxiety away from his friends is to walk down a path?

      I'm so glad to hear this feedback! The more challenging the environment you are looking for a change in the better you have to have things in smaller spaces. Once you get things working, you can build up to more challenging situations!

    I just found this podcast and I am so excited to hear someone actually talk about bits in direct correlation to the horse’s anatomy, rather than to a specific discipline. Thank you so much for the detailed explanation of bit function, step by step from touching the rein to releasing it, and for demonstrating how relevant this is to bitless headstalls too! This is priceless knowledge.

    I have Finnhorses that as a farm horse breed tend to keep their negative thoughts inside, only showing them when you've gone over their threshold. Your description of "I want you to speak up now, not later" really made into words what I've been feeling here. After all, it takes a lot of trust to be able to voice your concerns, especially if the other party holds all the cards.

    I have a fat simple snaffle and it is set with no wrinkles, a year or so ago I tried lowering one hole more, and my guy would not stop throwing the bit around in his face, so I adjusted it back, now I wonder if I should lower it and wait for him to learn to carry it on his tongue?

    Was that a bend from the pole, or from the neck?

    • @JoshNicholAHorsemansPursuit
      @JoshNicholAHorsemansPursuit 10 місяців тому

      The primary purpose is the pole but there are always moments when the neck will be involved. Every horse will bend the neck as they need but we should be doing our best to isolate how the rotation affects the hind end!

    • @RaniTanny
      @RaniTanny 10 місяців тому

      @JoshNicholAHorsemansPursuit I get that the neck sometimes bends- but the true bend is at the pole...rather the Flexion comes from the pole. I feel people get confused when seeing a bend as something we should teach the horse, rather than flexing the pole

    • @JoshNicholAHorsemansPursuit
      @JoshNicholAHorsemansPursuit Рік тому

      Absolutely, the challenge with riding is that their are many elements that influence a horse as they find themselves with a rider on their back. We touch the reins, shift our seat, create tension, etc and as we consider that their is a positive head height and a negative height and both are influenced by the way we ride, we will consider it more in what we do.

      @@JoshNicholAHorsemansPursuit We don't actually put the halters on upside down; our horses have rope cavessons that look like rope halters, except more fitted than a halter and with the loop on their nose instead of under their chin. They work great! But, people see the rope halter base and automatically assume we've just put the halters on upside down. It's pretty funny.
