Pottery Wheel Magic: Make a Self-Watering Plant Pot with Wild Clay! #potterywheelthrowing
"DIY Self-Watering Orchid Pot on the Pottery Wheel | Wild Clay & foraged Finnish Kaolin Tutorial"
Kainuun Kaoliini** 🇬🇧 Subtitles in English 🇬🇧
🇫🇮 Suomeksi tekstitys saatavilla🇫🇮
Join me at UDUMBARA for a pottery journey inspired by nature and Finnish clay! In this tutorial, I’ll show you how to create a self-watering orchid pot - a perfect project for plant lovers looking for a unique, soil-free way to care for their plants. Using wild clay from Somero and high-fired kaolin from Northern Finland, this pot serves as a natural water reservoir, slowly hydrating plants growing directly on its textured surface.
My experience with the Kainuun Kaolin project inspired this project (www.kainuunkaoliini.fi/), where artists explore and forage wild Finnish kaolin. I’ll also use sodium silicate to create a rough texture, helping plants cling to the pot.
Stick around for the fun ending, where I’ll introduce you to my sister Johanna, the “mushroom whisperer,” and her secret patch of Yellowfoot mushrooms!
If you’re in southern Finland, don’t miss the KWUM Ceramics Museum’s winter exhibition on Native clay-it’s an inspiring showcase of local, native clay art.
Thank you for watching, and let’s get started on this pottery adventure!

      Hello! Thank You very much. I work mostly with Shimpo ( Nidec) RK-55. It is perfect for learning. And I still like using it even though I have done pottery for 40 years. There is no need to buy wheels with big motors. Throwing pottery is a technique. This is the wheel I use with my students, too. It is a good way to learn to listen to the clay and not use too much physical power. All the best!

    • @UDUMBARA_Helsinki
      @UDUMBARA_Helsinki Рік тому

      Yes, it can break, and I would not. If there is water inside and freezes, it will break (as water expands when it freezes). Also, the frost expands the ground, too. Here in Finland, you can see how the frost breaks the roads every winter. It must be the same in Canada. All the best and thank you for watching🪴😘!
